I'm not talking about British fish & chips either. I love cornmeal battered fish with flavor! Hopefully the restaurant makes their own tartar sauce too. I have a day off tomorrow & am fiendin!

I think he's looking for Fried Fish. The "Roscoes" of Fried Fish.
I am not sure such a place exists...11/10/2008 -

The solution: Fish and chips, accompanied by hard cider for me and ginger beer.
The venue: Ye Olde King's Head, Santa Monica.
The verdict: Crunchy, ethereal, perfectly fried batter. Standard issue cod, adequate as a base for the sublimely fried crust. Chips are much improved by sitting underneath a few pieces of vinegared fish for a while.

OK, then Reel Inn at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica may be your best bet.

I love southern style fried catfish...but the real deal is hard to find here. I think you have to find a soul food joint. I've been told this is a good place to try, but I haven't been there yet:

I know you aren't looking for fish & chips, but Brit's in Pasadena has a delicious, thick, rich, beer batter that blows away most "fish & chips" places I've tried in CA:

Fish and chips that's not made in the British manner can be found at Smitty's on Venice Blvd. in Culver City. They're more in the Southern style. Most of the Brit fish and chip places here are rubbish.

The only regular commercial venue for this that I've tried is the Gumbo Pot in the 3rd & Fairfax Farmer's Market. Some of the soul-food joints probably have it, too, but I haven't gotten around to trying them. There are two places close to me in Pasadena, Louisiana Fish on Washington just east from North Lake, and another one whose name I don't remember, also off N. Lake on Mountain. That one's in the same strip mall as the Roma deli. There's that Big Mama's place just north of Washington on Lake as well - if they have fish, it's almost sure to be OUR kind of fish!
I agree - I do like Brit-style fish & chips, but I really miss the hell out of Tennessee catfish. Even the stuff at Cracker Barrel can make me happy...11/11/2008 -

Honey Kettle in Culver City or Compton has fried chicken and fish! So you could even get fried fish and waffles if you want....

Try Uncle Darrows on the westside. My friend too me there b/c he loves fried catfish with the cornmeal batter. It's delicious.
