I enjoyed the ribs and similiar to other yelpers wish they were falling off the bone a bit more. The BBQ sauce was fairly average. My BBQ preferences lean lean towards more Carolina style with a bit more tang with additional vinegar in the sauce.
The sides were alright as well. I got the "dirty" mac and cheese. Again, I prefer mine a bit more wet and a lot more simple. I did enjoy the potato salad.
I wouldn't mind coming back if I were back this way. There's plenty of menu items yet to try. Still looking for a good American BBQ place in Burbank-Glendale-Eagle Rock area. Ping me if you know of any I should definitely try.

El Chavo Taco Stop
Category: Mexican
Neighborhood: Pasadena
For a few years now, I've been following this sometimes elusive taco truck (aka Wascally Wabbit on Wheels!!). I so look forward to having their authentic, orangy-goodness al pastor tacos. Finally, instead of my hello, dash and dine at the truck, I can look forward to sitting down - with a Margarita? That would be awesome!
Where Taco King excels in their carne asada tacos, I give it to El Chavo for their al pastor tacos or burritos - hands down, it's the best one I've tasted so far. (If you disagree, please, please email me and point me in to the path of Al Pastor Heaven!!)
I'll let you guys know once this place opens up!!
I make both sweet and savory Aebelskivers at home, but I *cannot* get them to be this big, light and fluffy on the inside and a beautiful marbled pancake-batter-camerilization on the outside. That raspberry sauce it comes with is a wonderful accompaniment.
It does make me wonder and wish they would take the best thing in the restaurant and build it up to more. At home I've made a few of these.
How about Apple Aebleskivers, Peach Aebleskivers, Strawberry Aebleskivers and Blueberry Aebleskivers? How about taking a walk on the wild side and stuffing them with breakfast sausage Aebleskivers.. or cubes of Swiss Cheese and Black Forrest Ham stuffed inside?
The rest of the restaurant? ...well, it's all plays second fiddle to their little puffy stars. I hope one day we'll see multiple sweet and savory choices for these lovely, little Aebleskivers gems.
First let me say that clean and bright ambiance and excellent corner location sets up Thai Satay in a positive light. This means with all this good stuff, the food should deliver and it does, but one expects more. I enjoyed the Beef Panang Curry (not on the menu, but those in know.. know to ask!) and Pad Thai. It was my frist time so those are the two standard dishes I judge any Thai restaurant.
It was OK... but OK doesn't do a restaurant any justice when it's competing with other restaurants - especially when I can also choose a Vietnamese, Chinese or awesome Korean joint just down the street.
My challenge to the folks at Thai Satay: ante up your menu and flavors (give it a good Thai kick - don't make me ask for Siracha to get me through the meal), make it so that my eyes close as I eat your food... and make me want to camp out on your front door. I know you can do it!!
I always think of this place as the epitome of the perfect taco. What we were served the other night was mediocre at best. We could have gotten better eats at home at a King Taco. La Super-Rica what happened? I have to admit that having no choice but to put up and listen to the stupid, self-important conversations of the boorish crowd before us didn't help.

The first time I stepped foot at La Super-Rica was in 1989 - it's good to see that the menu hasn't changes as much and that the food was just as fantastic today!
I spent the 4th of July and my birthday here and this was the one place we had to visit above all the fancy-schmancy restaurants in all of SB. We drove by at lunch and saw the line and decided that dinner might be better. Unlike others, I view long lines as a sign of good eats. It was just noon and really hot that day. Later that night, I think we got there 5 minutes before they were about to shut the kitchen down.
La Super-Rica is a true gem and the late Julia Child's favorite taco joint. The best sign of this is seeing the big stainless steal bowl filled with masa and little craters of scooped out dough. I really believe the heart of this joint lies in their always fresh tortillas. Whatever you order, just ask for more.
I opted for the marinated pork and cheese between two tortillas and my bf enjoyed the beef tacos. In fact he went back and got more tacos. It's funny that others have complained about the menu. I love the menu , the on-spot descriptions and the specials board - don't forget those. Just take your time and read it. Whatever catches your eye & stomach - that's what you order. As simple as that.... and the prices?? You're having a gourmet taco and it's worth it every penny!

Straits Restaurant

The restaurant was very nicely decorated in asian-modern chic. The tea lights were a nice touch and a relaxed feel to the place. After a long day at work, it was much appreciated. I personally think there are too many restaurants try to be clubs instead of places to enjoy an nice, relaxing meal.
Getting to the food: we were hungry and ordered the Chilled Seafood Platter for Two and our drinks while we decided on which entrees to share. A few minutes later, we were told that the Seafood platter was not available. A slight disappointment (- 1 star), but the selection was still good, so we just opted for half a dozen Kumamoto oysters.
The six oysters were accompanied with four sauces: a vinaigrette, sweet and sour, cocktail and a lime mayonnaise. I didn't care for the latter, something about dairy products and oysters don't mix. We also noticed that the oysters weren't as fresh as they should be. (-1 star)
On to the entrees! We shared the Ikan Goreng - the menu said that it was a pan crisped (though I could have sworn it was deep fried) beautifully presented (see picture) with wok-fired Chinese broccoli with black bean basil sauce. The sauce was wonderful! (+1 star)
We also shared the garlic noodles with chicken and consequently had to ask for some Siracha sauce - just to kick it up a notch. The last entree we shared was the Tamarind Beef which consisted of a perfectly wok-fired filet mignon and watercress with black pepper oyster sauce. (+1 star)
You would think we wouldn't have room for dessert, oh, no.. we ordered the warm chocolate cake with fondant and vanilla bean ice cream. It was very good though not dissimilar to any other restaurants that serve warm chocolate cakes with gooey centers. I did enjoy their Godiva coffee with real whipped cream - it was perfect proportioned without going overboard with the chocolate liquor. (+1 star)
What I mostly appreciated about this restaurant is that they did the right thing with the Manager coming up to us to apologize for not having the Seafood platter and that they comped our coffee and dessert - that's a restaurant that really cares. (+3 stars) Thanks Straits! We'll certainly be back!
Since the rooms did not have any air conditioning (not really needed this close to the beach) we appreciated the in-room standing fan as well as the whisper quiet ceiling fan.
I think what separates this inn from other hotels that offer the same boring continental breakfast, is someone like Frank who truly welcomes a beautiful morning with you. Like other reviewers before me, the super continental breakfast offers fresh, local pastries, fresh coffee with every flavor creamer, juices, boiled eggs and a variety of cereal. The last morning we were there, I was looking for a blueberry bagel I enjoyed the day before and didn't find one. On cue, Frank pops his head in the back and comes out with a tray of bagels and offers me the blueberry. That kind of service makes this place memorable.
We got in-room massages again from our favorite pair of masseurs - Ruth and Mary Jean (see my review for Massage Therapy Associates) and both massage tables they bought fit in the Superior King Room very nicely. We turned on the fireplace to give us some relaxing ambiance.
Let me address some of the negative reviews here and from Travel Advisor websites.
- The train - heard it once (it tooted for 2 seconds), didn't bother me and never really heard it again.
- Also, I had a question and walked in the middle of a heated discussion between a customer and Frank. The customer complained about the bill stating his wife (nowhere to be seen) said that they should have 25% off. Frank said he told his wife that you had to book this online to get the discount - which they never did. (it clearly said that on the website when I was looking for a place) The disgruntled guest rudely called Frank cheap, I thought it was the other way around.
Note that when you check in, like any hotel, you sign a form that says: you will not smoke on the premises, you will return the brass key given to you, etc. etc... so if you leave without returning the key, you signed a waiver that says you will pay the $25. In defense of the Inn, I think if one expects a hotel to be responsible, the hotel owners have every right to expect the same of their guests. (Take it from me, a person who stays 200+ nights/year at various hotels. I've been doing this since 1998.)
All in all, for the price (got 10% off with my AAA card), newly updated rooms and location, it's probably the best deal in town.

Anyway, I needed a stiff drink or two and the cocktail and wine list easily sufficed here. Each of us had a starter and surprise, surprise, I ordered the seared Fois Gras - ah, such the predictable creature of habit am I. Two of our party ordered the Yukon Gold Potato soup to start and yes, I did experienced the rare Appetizer Envy. A bowl was set in front of them that contained a dollop of creme fresh with lovely bits of bacon sprinkled on top. Then server the slowly poured a steaming stream of potato goodness all around it. It was a decadent display that made me make a mental note of "Next time."
One of my dining habits, aside from ordering what no one else would, is to always try the chef or house special. I am rarely, rarely disappointed and, unfortunately, that night I was. One Market boasts a daily roast and Wednesday's roast was a Mishima Ranch "Wagyu" Top Round with natural jus. You eat with your eyes first and the first thing I wanted to do was close my eyes. The muddy burgandy color, albeit, medium rare red, was not at all appetizing. The taste was less than par and this cut of meat would have been better served on toasted a toasted pretzel bread, with a horseradish spread and caramelized red onions.. just a suggestion.
Having graduated to Entree Envy, I looked across the table at my colleague who was thoroughly enjoying his duck breast. Damn him. Forget about the special, trust your first gut instinct and order that.
On to dessert, at this point, my dining experience was going down in flames and the final fireball came with the mint ice cream sandwich. The chocolate cookie part of it was fine, it was the overpowering basil flavor of the home-made ice cream that sent me over. The mint was near or non-existent.
Everyone else in the party enjoyed their meal - good for them. Picky me, well, it wasn't my night, but I lucky us, there are hundreds of restaurants yet to be Yelped.
Date

We started off the the fresh shrimp egg rolls with peanut sauce. It was pretty good. I ordered the #35 combo: pork chops with the shredded pork and egg meatloaf. The others oped for variations of pho - not my deal on a rare, warm and sunny day in South San Francisco.
I also liked the Thai Iced coffee - not bad and like all Thai coffees, it's slightly on the sweet side. Everything is also better with the garlic pepper sauce and a big bottle of Siracha found at each table.
For quick good eats for lunch and great prices to match, this place is for you.
