Q:
How much does an oil change cost?
A:
They price everything fair. In my experience, they are less than the dealer. If you ask for manufacturer parts, they will get them and they passed the cost savings on to me. It was much cheaper than what the dealer would have charged me.

I had an SUV that was rough shifting into gear, would get stuck at 3rd gear, and was displaying check engine, traction control, and 4Lo lights. Resetting these codes (solenoid power and pressure related) with a BlueDriver ODB2 scanner would give relief for about 4-5 miles. They took care of me, were less than a dealer, and spent time discussing the issues and remedies. Eventually I will get a new transmission, which they priced less than the dealer would sell to me and even less than a used junkyard or overhauled transmission. However, I have some personal stuff to manage and we agreed to button it back up with Toyota parts/fluids (thanks for passing along the discount!). It's operating much better than it was, shifts smoothly, and the codes haven't returned.
From the TMI department (Yelp wants more detail!)
I called and they were a little busy, so we scheduled my drop-off later in the week. F* was great in getting me in, clear about the troubleshooting estimate, what they might have to do based upon the issues mentioned but they needed to diagnose it first, and the turnaround time. I was in no rush.
Ma* and I had a few calls to discuss the SUV, the problem codes, and testing as well as remedies based upon the codes. He's really nice and very knowledgeable. He even knew about two important Toyota Service Bulletins that 4 out of 5 people at the dealer didn't know about. The 5th person was a service manager and a tech at the dealer I go to and knew how to pull them up and reviewed them with me.
It had been 50k miles since the last transmission service, which the previous owner had done before selling the car. The fast lube place used a grip additive, which Toyota doesn't recommend. Best thing to do is drop the pan, check the solenoids and harness for function and resistance, and look at the fluid. I agreed. All checked out OK on the solenoids and harness. The oil color was normal but did have some odd sludge, where possibly the grip additive that a fast lube place used. Toyota does not recommend transmission fluid additives. This may have affected the flow of the transmission fluid as there were some metal particles in the transmission fluid, indicating that I would need a new transmission soon.
He gave me a good price on the parts and labor and a new transmission price from the dealer cheaper than a rebuild or used transmission or what I could get it for from the dealer myself. At the present time I have some stuff going on and can't put in a new transmission.
We discussed buttoning up the transmission, replacing the fluid, and using a Toyota filter and gasket as well as waiting a few months to replace the transmission. I know it might have problems or fail at sometime in the future. He said he would put it back together and do me right.
He used Toyota branded parts and fluids, did it right plus got a price on a Toyota gasket and filter that was much less than the normal dealer price if I had taken it in for dealer service.
After buttoning it up and resetting the codes they haven't came back and the transmission is shifting smoothly again! I will have to replace it in the future but appreciate what he was able to do to get me functional for now.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chris K.Centreville, VA02Jun 8, 2016
I had just purchased a vehicle from a local dealership, and not three weeks later the car began to lurch when accelerating, and come to an alarming slam at a stop. Needless to say it made it a nightmare to drive in stop and go traffic, and I'm far from a mechanic, but it struck me as the transmission showing signs of impending failure.
I felt fortunate at the time because the vehicle had come with a power-train warranty, and I was still within the parameters of coverage. Once I had it looked at, the transmission was diagnosed as the fault, however the warranty company would only cover service up to a point, so I needed to find somewhere trustworthy and affordable.
I called Sterling Transmissions and spoke with Maurice. He was patient and listened attentively to my layman explanation of the issue. We set up a time where I could leave the car there for him and his team to test.
I dropped my car off and the next day he called me and confirmed the transmission was failing as I had feared. He would also contact the warranty company to begin the claims process. It quickly became evident that the warranty company wanted to go out of there way to pay as little as possible of the costs. They wouldn't even guarantee to assist with the cost of opening the vehicle for proper diagnosis, if it proved that somehow after a few weeks of ownership it could have been my fault. At this time Maurice prepared several quotes for me depending on how the warranty company chose to respond. I was able to properly prepare for the worst case scenario which was important to me.
The warranty company did decide to help, but on their own terms. They wanted to send a transmission that they would be able to purchase at lower cost to them. After waiting for several days for it to arrive, Maurice called and told me that it was in horrible shape, and he couldn't condone putting it in my vehicle. At another shop they may have just thrown it in. What would it matter to them if it went out months later? My car had been occupying their lift for days, affecting their workflow, but here Maurice wanted to make sure I had a properly working vehicle going forward and for that I'm terribly grateful.
Maurice continued to call the warranty company on my behalf, and they promised to send another transmission in good order. Several days passed beyond the expected arrival, and my car continued to occupy garage space in their shop. When it finally arrived, they turned it around extremely quickly and I was on the road again, and have been driving smoothly since. Maurice's initial estimates of the cost to me were extremely accurate, and I was able to plan ahead for the costs. They really went above and beyond for me, and I appreciate their help.
If you have the misfortune of having a vehicle's transmission fail on you, you can come here knowing that they will treat you with respect, and price it as accurately and affordable as possible. Talk to Maurice, he's great.

I bought a car off of the private market and it ended up having a pretty serious transmission issue that would have been insanely expensive to repair. Maurice was really up front in explaining the issues that I had and gave me some guidance on how to proceed. Doesn't push anything on you that you don't need, was just really kind and professional. As sucky as my situation was with my car, Maurice was honestly a big bright spot and helped me make an informed decision about my car. If you have any transmission issues big or small, I definitely recommend going to this shop. You won't regret it.

Sterling Transmission, owned and operated by Maurice, deserves 5 stars because they have blown me away by their customer service, great attitude and professionalism, excellent work with attention to detail. I am beyond impressed with how they handle difficult situations. I had a 2011 Hyundai Genesis 4.6 v8 that needed a transmission replacement according to the dealer, so I brought the car here and they did an excellent job replacing it with one that only had 30k on it! My car now drives like a new car once again. It also had one issue with the driveshaft and Maurice helped me find a shop that specializes exclusively in drive lines. I could not be more pleased with Maurice and the way he conducts his business. I will keep coming back here for any transmission work in the future and I will refer family and friends here as well! Keep up the awesome work, Sterling Transmission!
