Lulu And Mooky's Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream
Category: Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt
Neighborhood: Lower East Side
well, i was here on a whim one cold/windy afternoon with Nina C. she had discovered a spot with a silly handwritten sign saying, "Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream". i guess this was when they first opened up shop. still new, we decided to walk over there and check it out for ourselves.
it's small and there's only a table there for setting a few things down... but no seating. you can simply take your ice cream and cross 1/2 a street on Allen where they have the benches for patrons to sit on the island.
now, what to pick! there is copious amounts of extracts and flavorings to choose from. no one had ever tried the TRUFFLE OIL concoction yet and it was my instinct that told me i should go for it. best decision of my life! it's bad enough that i'm one indecisive bitch... but in this situation, i have prevailed! i picked truffle oil and pistachio. oh...my...gawd... it was a party in my mouth!!!
watching my mixture turn into ice cream right before my eyes was exciting. i loved watching and taking photos of the whole experience. the owner of Lulu & Mooky's paid a visit and asked us questions about what to add to the ever-expanding flavors board and inquired about how good our ice creams were. i mentioned Balsamic Vinegar and he smiled at the idea. =)
this healthier option of ice cream is definitely my kind of thing. i actually like it more than the stuff from the freezer section at the grocery store. this is a great place to bring your kids and experiment with complicated and interesting flavors!

Village Yokocho
Category: Japanese
Neighborhood: East Village
this place has your standard and no-so standard yakitori/japanese fare. i simply go here for their ORGASMIC seaweed salad with carrot ginger dressing. i crave for it like crack. which brings me to the acknowledgement that i, Joolie, have not been here in a YEAR! WTF. i avoided this place for personal reasons (*ahem stalker*), but i still have my love for this place.
from kimchi with pork stir fry, delicious ramen (yup!!! ramen is GOOD here), amazing tsukune (chicken meatballs) and even familiar Korean dishes as well. Bibimbap, Soon Duboo and lots of kimchi dishes are on their menu. i love it.
the cleanliness and service a bust here. although i love Village Yokocho with all my heart.... this place seriously needs to re-hire their staff and clean the place up a bit. i'm actually embarrassed to bring people here to try it out.
i am banned here for life.
yup. for life.
uh huh... not just for Light... but from Bellagio.
the VIP people don't know what they're doing. mainly because they combined our party with a bunch of crazy red necks without consulting us. we ended up getting into a fight with the red neck party and the security guards stomped on our heads while some of us were sprawled out on the floor. they completely did the WRONG thing and participated in knocking us all down, destroying my brand new LV purse (because it was covered in people's blood) and not STOPPING the fight.
now, i'm no fighter. i CAN fight and have had training, but i'm more of a "let's work it out" kind of chick. not when drinking tequila. it is the devil. i... turn into the devil.
we ended up being handcuffed and taken away by the Bellagio security. apparently... Light's cameras weren't working that night, so they had NO live or recorded feed of what happened or the fact that their bouncers were involved in the fight; not stopping it. WOW.
view photo. that crystal bowl..? yeah, i smashed it on someone's head.

WHITE CHEDDAR CORNBREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so buttery, so decadent, so orgasmic... honestly, i would come back here only for the cornbread! *drool*
clearly, there's a lot of great things about this place. their menu is a beautiful array of special things in season... but, the overall deliciousness/taste value is not up to par with me. the Beet Salad Tart is revolting, the Seared Cod lacks flavor and the Schnitzel Veal entree was a complete disappointment for my taste buds. perhaps... next time, Dovetail.

Aladdin Falafel Corner
Category: Middle Eastern
Neighborhood: University District
*ahem* sorry. i was channelling Disney's Aladdin for a moment.
during college... when i was broke and depressed from being broke- my wiser and much happier roommate suggested i grab a gyro with her on the Ave. huh? what? i didn't know what the hell a falafel or gyro was... i grew up on Korean/Japanese food or McDonald's. i was in for the best discovery of my life!
i explored the menu and asked my then roommate what i should try. she suggested i get a chicken gyro (since i don't eat lamb) and get some fries on the side. she ordered a falafel in a kronos flat bread for herself. the service is great! the staff are hilarious and really sweet. this is how i was introduced to a whole new world of middle eastern cuisine! i eat this stuff like it's going out of style, now.
since then, i had been eating from there every weeknight. i would ask my beau at the time, friends or roommates to bring me a gyro whenever they would be on the Ave. going back now... years after college, this place is still the same. delicious. everything on their menu is top notch. i miss you, Aladdin!!!
it was more than a year ago when i gathered up a group of my closest friends and waited outside of Ippudo for almost TWO hours in the freezing cold. we complained and moaned about the wait, but indeed- we had over 10 people in our party. what did we expect?
after what seemed like an eternity... we were called. once inside Ippudo- we ordered and served promptly. the server was very swift and everything we requested wasn't missed. i didn't think NYC would ever have a great ramen chain to cater to snooty eaters like myself. but, it happened. i was pleased.
if you've been wondering about this place... it's well worth the wait and praise it gets from blogs and critics. just make sure you're not starving while deciding to come here. grab a snack and bring your iPod. haha

Typhoon Lounge
Categories: Japanese, Sushi Bars
Neighborhood: East Village
good for sushi? no.
good for deals/discounts? sure.
this is probably the worst option on St. Marks for sushi. i'm talking about really lame sushi rolls, stale-ass crunchy toppings and depressing menu. i have never seen so short of a menu for a sushi joint in my whole life!
the entrees and sushi rolls are uncreative and boring. mind you, it's not horrible food- it's just a snooze fest. however, i like bringing my non-Asian buddies here- because they have very familiar items one might order when not typically a sushi/Japanese cuisine consumer. i've hosted parties here for my friends and Typhoon combined us with complete strangers to share the Tatami room. uhhhhhhh, ok... rude!

the service was a bit slow... but they didn't know that i would bring 15 girls into this place on a rainy night... near closing time. the ramen shop was bustling with the exception of my party, anyway... so the only waitress there had to juggle all the customers. we ordered and it took a while for everything to come out to us. still- being hungry and 90% of my friends had never tried ramen- i guess it was a hit.
the broths here are right on point. no one had any complains and i must say... their soba noodle with clear broth was certainly one of the best i've had. good work.

Mandoo Bar
Category: Korean
Neighborhood: Murray Hill
the mandoo's aren't horrible... but i've definitely had better at many other establishments in and around Koreatown. the portions of food is depressing... in all honesty, i can make a better mandoo at home. which i DID last week as i'm pondering about writing this review. the kimchi dumplings were pleasant... but the Jap Chae and Bibimbap were completely lame.
the service is probably the worst i've experienced on this block. we had to ask for things over and over and over again. sure, there was a friendly smile or two... but we never got what we requested, let alone a refill on our waters.

piss on my happiness parade.
spit at my face.
this is not a joke. i am serious.
sometimes you just want something greasy, fried and just plain nastay up in your mouth. you just don't care. why? because it tastes so damned good!!!
my friends scoffed when i walked into Kennedy's. we had been walking all over the east village for a photobooth crawl- and i was hungrier than a mutha... with a plethora of options in the midst of 14th street... i could have chosen any place. no, i wanted Kennedy's chicken sandwich combo (sandwich+soda+fries). $5, son. $5.
the guys who work there are slightly on the pervy-side. they kept flirting and stared at my cleavage as i waited for my food. "you are so hot... you made our night!" or "do you have a boyfriend" kind of questions were asked. mind you, i wasn't creeped out by them, but it was obvious that i received a lot of extra customer service from Kennedy's. lol
let's be honest. the chicken sandwich is BANG-A-RANG (yes, that's a phrase from Steven Spielberg's "Hook").
it's the basic sandwich: lettuce, tomato, mayo, ketchup and a breaded chicken patty. it's better than most chicken sandwiches i've ever had. juicy, crispy, flavorful and delicious! let's not forget about the addictive french fries. my friends were literally stealing the fries from me! oooooh, but a minute ago ya'll were making wise-cracks at me for wanting to go to Kennedy's, huh?! heheh.
