Trust The Orange Van
Nobody wants to be in the need of a plumbing job, but you have to have that handyman van pull up in your place of residence, make sure to make it the orange van of John J Cahill
I have checked other reviews and it looks like people may have mixed experiences w/the company in the past
However, my experience in 2024 was stellar: from the speed in which we got the quote to the fast turn around: all in all, we didn't have suffer cold showers long.
Two things I especially enjoyed (outside of the renewed deep deep appreciation for hot water!):
1. Flat fair fee (tm) that we got quoted. Of course any job can become more complicated than initially anticipated, but knowing what to expect from the start was great.
Makes it easy to be prepared with the check for the day of the project execution which is a win for the company, too.
2. Everybody we communicated with was pleasant and trustworthy; the exchanges were quick and to the point. Our technician Joe put us on easy with his knowledge & the fast working style.
Orange we glad we called the Cahill Inc!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Peter C.Chicago, IL09Jan 25, 2024
I just wanted to thank John J. Cahill Plumbing Company for helping me today. Around noon I flushed my toilet and nothing happened. The tank was empty. I called and requested service and was told by the very nice customer service agent that someone would be out today to help me. In an hour and a half Joe and Jack arrived and made the repair. They installed a new fill valve and my 20 year old Toto is good as new! I've met Jack for the first time but I've known Joe for 10 years and he's worked for me several times and always does a great job.
Just wanted to express my sincere gratitude to Jack and Joe for job well done. Thanks again guys!
Have a great night!

This isn't the Cahill from years ago. Lots has changed and they leave you empty when something they supposedly fixed won't work. They simply don't care and won't respond. If you used them in the past, now you will be disappointed with their work.

Sometimes "playing plumber" doesn't work and you need a professional! Highly recommend John J Cahill of Evanston!!
Reliable! Trustworthy! And reasonably priced!!
(Yes, that's a tampon applicator that was flushed and wedged in the workings of the toilet!) - please visitors, only flush toilet paper!! And respect the courtesy flush!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Richard N.Chicago, IL01Aug 25, 2022
We used Cahill Plumbing over the years for work in our building. I decided to call them for some minor repairs in my condo.
First of all they charge for travel time and higher hourly rates for anything out of their specified area. I was not informed of this when I made my appointment. I was informed after I had already booked their service. They informed me I would not be charged extra being they did not tell me ahead of time.
I was having a new gasket put into a handle on my bathroom sink to stop dripping, it took all of 15 minute, and a cost basically nothing for a small gasket. Secondly I had a small replacement piece put into my toilet, this took no more than 30 minute if that, and the cost of the item could not have been more than $ 50.00. Lastly I had the "U" pipe replaced under the sink. I checked with Home Depot and the most expensive "U" pipe with a copper lining was all of $ 29.95. This replacement took approx. 30 to 45 minutes. Not to mention that the sink does not drain properly, and should drain perfectly.
I received a bill for $1041.55 after the so called adjustment they said they would give me due to the original mis-understanding regarding the hourly rates. OUTRAGEOUS!!! I can't imagine how much it would have been before the so called adjustment.
When I finally objected they gave me $ 228.00 off the bill, and sent a new bill for $ 813.55. Still an outrageous amount for the materials and amount of work done. Not to mention that my sink does not drain with a new "U" pipe, and the faucet handle still leaks water onto the counter top.
I looked up the hourly rates of plumbers in Chicago, and the highest was around $ 95:00 per hour, they were billing over $ 200 per hour.
I can tell you for sure they will never do any work for our condominium association again, and anyone in the city or outside their designated area should be sure to get information regarding their hourly rates and billing tactic. THIS WAS HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!! I don't mind paying for something reasonable, but this was just an outrage!!! I will be sure to tell everyone in our neighborhood email never to use Cahill.
I recently used ABC PLUMBING and they were reasonable for the time and efforts they made, not to mention their customer service and follow up. I highly recommend them.
A VERY UNSATISFIED CUSTOMERHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - James B.Rogers Park, Chicago, IL04Apr 2, 2023Updated review
I had a goode plumber come out after Cahill and they immediately identified the problem while Cahill, besides charging double, totally had it wrong what the problem was. So not only is Cahill extremely expensive but they can't even get it right!

For that they charged $711!! Highway robbery. I would have never called them and will never use them. Apparently they charge $65 every 15 minutes per person (so if they are there 65 minutes they get another $130). Total rip off. AVOID!!

The reason I'm being so harsh, is after FIVE MINUTES fixing a leak under kitchen sink, he installed my new single handle facet in main bathroom. That took 30 minutes. But, for sure he was here less than 45 minutes!
Cost for labor was $475!!
High school education and how many years apprenticing, I don't know.

Water Heater Install. I called around for a quote and Cahill was by far the cheapest (100s less than other places ). Some plumbing companies asked me questions such as how many stairs to water heater location, is it in a hard to reach area and so forth with it costing me more every time I answered yes . Cahill gave me a flat rate to replace my 21 yr old water heater . They honored that quote but a rusted valve needed replacing so I did have to pay extra for the valve . The foreman and another employee came first thing in the morning, fixed everything fairly quickly and professionally. They never complained about the age of my water heater or rust or other things that occur with an old water heater . The only issue was the misinformation about payment . The office said I can pay the following week when they mail my bill but the foreman wanted a check in hand right after the job was finished. I would recommend having a check ready with full payment the day of install . Quality of install was above board and I would highly recommend them to install big ticket items .
