Most unbelievable sushi dinner ever. Our server suggested ordering three things from every page to share... That was on point!
They specialize in uni and it showed. Every dish was excellent regardless if it had uni in it or not though! Prepared with precision and detail.
The uni cocktail was outrageous, eel with ponzu incredible, tuna tartare, geoduck, scallop roll, uni ika roll, and salmon avacado roll were the freshest most delicious ingredients all expertly paired together.
If you want to go on a culinary journey go to Soto. Unmarked on the outside but throwing down at the highest level inside. Everyone treated with the upmost care and respect.
Worth every cent. I was sad when it was all over (as it was crazy good just wanted to keep trying) and can't wait to go back! The menu changes daily so a new experience is always ready and waiting for you. -

While definitely very good, I thought that Soto didn't live up to the reputation. Given that it is a 2 Michelin star restaurant (higher than any other sushi restaurant in the city aside from Masa, including Sushi of Gari and Sushi Yasuda), my expectations were quite high.
To caveat this, however, it might be an unfair comparison because I typically get the omakase and sushi at other restaurants and we tried non-omakase dishes at Soto.
The ambiance is very minimalistic and the restaurant was actually quite small. James questioned if we went to the right restaurant several times because it was so starkly decorated.
What we ate:
- Uni and yoba was excellent. The first taste of the uni actually took my breath away. I savored every drop of the shitake broth. The uni lived up to the reputation and was some of the best uni I've had in my life.
- Uni ika roll (uni and squid wrapped in kelp) was absolutely mind blowing. The combination of the two items worked seamlessly and I savored every bite.
- Miso soup was really good because you could definitely taste the uni. It was different from any other miso soup I've tried, but it was still miso soup and I would probably opt for something else next time
- Black cod was good, but I've definitely had better
- The toro tartare was drenched in soy sauce and way too salty. We shared our concerns with the server, but instead of fixing the issue, they just took it off the bill instead.
- The surf clam dish was not very good. Rather than bringing out the flavor of the clam, the ginger actually covered up any other taste the clam might have had.
Aside from the dishes, we also tried various pieces of sushi. The only pieces I liked were the uni (make sure to try every kind they have!) The rest were underwhelming.
Also, curiously, there happened to be a NY health inspector in the restaurant while we were dining. We only discovered this when one of the sushi chefs let out a loud, strangled shout and stormed out of the restaurant into the back room, slamming the door behind him. He then let out a stream of loud, anguished yells. Of course, the entire restaurant stopped eating to see what was going on. Eventually, the chef came back and demanded to know which pieces of sushi the health inspector was touching with her thermometer so he could throw them away. I wasn't sure whether I should be very impressed that there were such high standards for the sushi that the chef would become so upset, or be very weirded out that a grown man would have such a temper tantrum in a nice restaurant. In any case, the service was also disjointed. The server kept on pressuring us to order quickly during the beginning of the meal (before we had even opened our menus) and then did not pay us enough attention later on in the meal. Quite an interesting experience.
Would most likely not come back to Soto again given how many good Japanese restaurants are in the city. Perhaps just for the uni. It was good but not worth the price tag. Immediately after we finished eating here, we walked over to Meatball Shop to eat a second dinner. -

The Best Place For japanese All over the world.
Fabulous dinner.
5 dishes every one is better than the one before.
quite expensive but truly worth nearly every penny.
their only problem is the service, not good but not the best one. in a place like this i would expect the waiter to know exactly what on every dish, also the sushi chef is talking angry and loud sometimes so its kind of distracts me from the amazing relaxing atmosphere and the perfect food.
the food is special and unique.. all perfect i gave the food 5 stars!
i ordered (from to best to a little bit less from best)
lobster sashimi - even the seaweed salad its perfect/
tuna tar tare - amazing' i almost cried from joy!! to die for!
steamed lobster and uni mousse - beautiful plate... the best uni i had.
dobin mushi soup - unique and tast. perfectly cooked shrimp & fluke.
uni ika roll - wonderful sushi rice, best quality uni, but too much for me...
the decoration is minimalistic and amazing.. the music is relaxing and it feels very high-end, i wish the chef was a little bit more quiet and the service to be better.
also they have only one restroom haha =]
wonderful night i had, it is a place everyone must go when in manhattan.
i know i would. -
What can I say about Soto that hasn't already been covered? Nothing. However, I will press on and right a review anyway.
Soto is the perfect spot in West Village to enjoy a meal when you have time to spare. Don't come to Soto and expect to be rushed. That isn't the way Soto works. The chief takes his time in preparing each piece of fish that leaves his kitchen. He takes pride in his craft and each piece is presented as such.
I have never been disappointed by any item on the menu. Two of my favorite menu items are the uni cocktail and the uni ika roll. Yes, the pieces of fish are small. However, the sushi is of traditional Japanese size and cut. This isn't Americanized sushi and isn't an AYCE sushi place, so size doesn't matter (insert 'that's what she said joke' here).
Be prepared to spend money here before you go. If you are looking for a place where the fish is fresh, the decor is great, and you can appreciate sushi for what it is, Soto is a must visit. If you are looking for a place to get full off of Sushi, Soto won't be a good choice.
