Everytime I thought of One Sunset, I pictured a beautiful and classy lounge/bar...
We came here because a friend was promoting for the bar. After entering the large wooden double doors, I expected to be blown away by the decor. Instead, it was really dark and I could barely see where I was going. I ended up walking into the back of one the security guards since he was wearing a black suit and was like 7 feet tall.
There's a sort of dance floor in between the tables. To the left was a table filled with guys all sporting Ed Hardy apparel. On the right were the girls from 'Rock of Love'.
Drinks were strong, but that was probably the only good thing. While waiting for our car at valet, a mouse scurried past my feet onto Sunset Blvd--I hope Ratatouille made it safely across!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Jon W.New York, NY613135Nov 19, 2008
LOVE. THIS. PLACE.
Celebrated my birthday dinner this year a few months ago and could not have been happier.
For starters, the space is BEAUTIFUL. It's part ultra-lounge, part bar, part dining room, but overall flows together very nicely to piece an ultra-chic one-stop venue. If you arrive and your entire party is not there, the hostess will direct you to the bar area in the front. No attention to detail has been spared throughout the entire space, with gorgeous accents throughout.
We were seated at a nice long table (part of 8) with comfy couches to sit out. The menu is pretty extensive, all moderately priced ($10-$22), and meant to be shared. If you're feeling adventurous, the chef will prepare a sampling for the table, at $45/head.
I would highly recommend:
- Erica's Bad Ass Cheeseburgers - the best sliders i've ever had! They include fries and onion rings, and are absolutely delicious.
- Proscuitto Flatbread - topped with pears and other delicious that meld together
- Bacon Spinach Salad - Ah-Mazing.
Our server was very attentive, always making sure our drinks were replenished, and even brought out a free dessert : ) Drinks are average hollywood prices ($12-15), and fairly strong.
We left around 10.30 before the DJ started spinning, but the place was packed. I've heard that on weekends they do have a velvet rope in place outside to the "non-dinner" patrons. I would make a dinner resy, and lounge around after.

Bottom Line: this place is amazing. Whether you're going for food, drinks, or both, you're bound to have a great time at ONE.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jun 21, 2008
Oh the drama of getting into a hotspot in LA. This is why I prefer clubbing/lounging in Vegas when on the West coast. The LA scene is SO 5 minutes ago. The door games that bouncers and promoters play here haven't changed at all, and it really isn't all that.
Ok... enough bitching.
So, Friday nite, 10pm, group of 6 guys and 8 girls (some of which are admittedly hot...... though I got stuck with the grenade this evening), the usual posturing at the door, even though we have a table reserved, we have to do the requisite "please stand to the side" for 10 minutes so that we help build up a small door crowd and convey the image that this place is hard to get into, I just thought it was pure comedy.
Once inside, table service wasn't too bad. 2 grey goose bottles, 4 chaser bottles, 12 shots, and the tab, with the gratuity already added to the total, is about $1,100. Yes, a lot by some standards, but compared to Vegas and other LA hotspots, is within reason. The waitresses were surprisingly friendly, the crowd was a decent mix, but the decor of the place leaves much to be desired. It was nice. But it just wasn't ...... all that. I didn't get what the buzz was about......... and I think I've come to accept that this is the way LA does it. I remember the old Roxbury (yes the legendary one, and I'm feeling very old right about now). It was a total shithole that could have doubled as a flour warehouse by day, but the buzz fed upon itself to become the hottest nightspot in LA back in the day.
The less-than-spectacular decor, and the shitty DJ are why I can't give it 5 stars. At least in places like Vegas, and even New York, the hotspots have the right look and feel to backup the rep, and usually have a decent DJ.
Fun night, just nothing out of this world.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Stephy S.San Francisco, CA497926081081Jun 25, 2007
Dearest One Sunset,
Here's a suggestion for ya...
Fire whoever answers your phone when someone calls for a reservation. And if you don't fire her, maybe explain to her that when a potential customer calls to inquire about getting a reservation at your brand new restaurant, it might not be the best strategy to laugh under her breath. You might also want to explain to her that the snarky attitude she's rocking is completely obnoxious and uncalled for. Furthermore, just because you are new and your menu has no prices on it, doesn't make you anything special. In fact, it's pompous, it's annoying and as a girl who goes to A LOT of restaurants and talks to A LOT of people, I hope your reaction to my 5:30pm dinner request was worth it, because you lost me.
Wish ya all the worst,
stephy s.Helpful 33Thanks 0Love this 34Oh no 0 - Antonio A.Los Angeles, CA44532016Jun 25, 2007
I agree with the previous review. As a matter of fact, you made me go to Katana instead, and I hate you for that!
Sorry Yelpers who want to know more about this place...I just dont have anything to review because not only did I not step foot in the door, my voice got stepped on over the phone...wait, does that even make sense?Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Deidre H.Sebastopol, CA2981917Jul 16, 2007
Despite all the negative reviews, I made my way to One Sunset last friday. I love ONE in NYC and found it hard to believe that the left coast edition could be as bad as everyone is saying. People were talken a lot of shit about this place - and none of it was true. We had a GREAT experience at One. An epic Didi evening of sorts (lunging, pole dancing - all the usaul de rigueur of night on the town with me).
So Mary E. and I roll up to Sunset. Skip the valet b/c we score street parking without looking. No ressi's on a Friday night. BRAVE?! We walk in and sit right down at the bar. No pushing, no pulling, no cat fights for a spot. Much too easy.
Our Fabulous bartender, Leslie makes me the filthiest martini i have ever had with THREE blue cheese stuffed olives. Heaven for me. I don't even drink it. It pours down my trough so fast. Mary E. on the other hand is having problems with her Berry Mojito. Too tart. Leslie gladly makes her a new one. But, it's also too tart. Leslie thinks she should try something else? So, she moves on to the Veuve. Finally we toast to our happy birthday. And what do you know, the next drink in on the bartender. Happy Birthday.
Next, we move on to the food. WOW. Im a chef, so I know what Im talking about. We started with the grapefruit carpaccio salad. OUT of this FUCKING world good - although it should be called crab salad. Thinly slice grapefruit topped with crab salad, that was studded with crispy little nuggets of Fleur de sal and a little side of an avocado salsa. My friend wanted to share but, I had to stab her hand with my fork when she went in for a 3rd bite.
Enter - cute couple from North Carolina, on honeymoon. Shots are served. They appear from no where with no notice. This is where the trouble begins. It's the charming bartender again. The host on the other side orders sliders and shares with us. It's at this point that I wonder what the fuck people are talking about all this "bad attitude". The french fries have something on them - something good, i forget what? The onion rings are thin, crispy - to die for. Another shot. This one from the lovely new bride-groom. We move on to the pulled pork/sloppy joe's. Again to die for! I live for pulled pork, and One Sunset's is not to be missed.
And then we get more "bad" service and attitude. The nice host, who shared his french fries and onion rings with us sends us dessert?! Strawberry & Peach shortcake with a candle. More champagne. What happens after this point can not be published.
Suffice to say we had a GREat experience. The food was excellent. The service was excellent. I will be back!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Lizzie S.Los Angeles, CA381908662Apr 22, 2009
I was treated to a meal here last night, and beforehand, I decided with respect to due diligence I would do my research like a good girl. Yelpers are not fans of this spot. Some reviews on Citysearch and a few other places yielded better results, but I gotta say, yelpers called it.
Drinks:
raspberry champagne & eidelweiss (too sweet)
master cleanse: vodka & lemon w/pepper & honey (way TOO sweet)
sidecar with blueberries and crap (way too muthafucking sweet, i asked for another shot of hennessey to make it less sweet. they took my drink & brought it back remixed, still foul, just foul)
Food:
dates stuffed with cheese & wrapped in bacon. meh.
spicy tuna tartare on tempura eggplant (decent, like the eggplant twist)
strawberries on burrata with balsamic. (no)
onion rings (not greasy, but not good)
bbq sliders (did.not.want)
chicken satay in soy sauce with kim chee inspired slaw (sa-tay, not saw-tay, and yes i am just that bitchy. pretty tasty anyhoo)
turkey meatballs (dog food-esque, and I know dog food)
ahi tuna nicoise (knee-swaz, please, not knee-swaw, but I am a bitch like that, good salad though)
clam chowder in a clam shell (interesting and tasty)
The service was good and the decor is nice. I would never go back again because the majority of the food was stinky, and the cocktails were a diabetic attack waiting to happen. If you are in the hood, go to their sister restaurant STK which has much better food and truly amazing drinks..Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Jean W.San Francisco, CA30020069Jul 11, 2007
Honestly: it'd be 2 stars if the place had been open for 3 months. But since it hasn't even been open for a month and there were no serious mistakes made. Everything could have been a little smoother service wise. But actually, for LA service, it's excellent. It's not so much tapas, but tastings... at applebee entree prices. Which is a total faux pas in the industry if you don't even have table cloth. But they were generous with their herbs the way WhIte Lotus was with the truffle oil. And that right there tells me this place will be a hit.
The furniture was swedish low, the waitstaff, of course- beautiful, it's actually a legit LA scene on Sunset on Sat. Sorry, OC. Not a destination spot- but not a bad place to end up.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Kat R.Los Angeles, CA33033215Sep 29, 2007
Cute trendy scenester of a place on Sunset past the most of the clubs towards the shopping end of the street.
The decor was super sexy with dark walls, floating water vases and etched out walls.
And the drinks were yummy -- we were in love with the fresh mojitos [wild berry and pineapple]. Though next time I want to try the strawberry champange drink with veuve, stoli strawberry and muddled strawberries -- sounds like heaven right??
The food was good. Tapas style and all delish though we ordered on the healthy side we got the surf and turf tacos, hearts of romaine salad, buffalo chicken skewers, and bacon wrapped shrimp.
Still the wait was forever and we did have reservations so what was the hold up?? I don't know. Plus our slightly out of it waitress rang up our Amex's for wayy more than the total bill.
Still, it was a fun place to start of the night. I'd go back. Maybe not on a weekend though to avoid the excessive wait.
PS Yes, this is the trendy restaurant always featured on The Hills.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jessica K.Los Angeles, CA172253111Apr 4, 2008
This place got less packed as the night went on..and what does that tell you? Everyone went somewhere else.. We went for a birthday party and had some drinks for a few hours and then we left and went somewhere else too.
The prices were not that great at all but our service was good - probably because we sat at the bar and kinda couldn't be unnoticed. I like the way the place was decorated and i liked that the patio area was out front so you could look down sunset but that was about all. Nothing too exciting.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0
