Lamp Post isn't on my regular rotation of bars or eats. It's usually the bar I go to when I'm rolling 10 deep and I need a bar that won't be crowded. So when Saturday night rolled around and me and my ten not closest friends were looking to tie one on after a few hours of day drinking, as well as looking to watch some college hoops, Lamp Post it is.
The $5 PBR & a shot is disgusting, I had three. The shot was straight turpentine style and the PRB was draft? and was somewhat flat and really not tasty at all. Again, that did not stop me from having 3, and I must say the 2nd and 3rd weren't quite as bad as I thought. Go figure.
My pulled pork sandwich? Pretty damn tasty. It was a nice hunk of meat topped with slaw and a hash brown all on a sesame seed bun. Kind of awesome if you ask me in a no frills type of way. No sauce on the side, but to honest, none needed, it was the perfect amount.
The bartenders are the servers and our dirty plates sat there for the time period we were there, which is not awesome, but this is a dive bar. It's like a dive bar for the 30's+ crowd, which wow, I am now part of clearly. Let those kiddo's have Lucky 7's, it's too damn crowded and loud.
Keep your expectation at what this place is: a dive bar that serves up food, local bands many nights of the week and karaoke on Fridays.Helpful 21Thanks 0Love this 19Oh no 0 - Apr 23, 2013
There are really only two things you need to know about The Lamp Post Bar & Grill -- their Angus burger is absolutely amazing, and they have $5 PBRs with a whiskey shot. Other than that, not much else needs to be said here. Great local neighborhood bar that's divey, super low-key, and just perfect for some late-night drinking and hanging out with friends. They have TVs for sports watchers, sometimes a live band, sometimes a comedy show, a jukebox, and the music they play is a mix of classic 80s/90s hits. The decor is outdated, but this place has been here for several years and has kept its integrity for providing great drinks, quality bar food, and genuine, friendly service to both old and new customers. Expect to feel right at home and comfortable when you come here for the first time.
Their Angus burgers are undoubtedly delicious. I wasn't expecting much from their burgers, and I usually order with cheese or something on top, but I forgot to order extra toppings. My burger came plain with a bun, so I was planning for disappointment. Even without cheese or even ketchup for that matter, this burger blew me away. If anything, try their Angus burger!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Emily P.Rockaway, NJ190135173Jul 22, 2011
Great little bar tucked into the farthest reaches of historic downtown. With a fun social quiz, a small amount of room for live shows (YES!), and very friendly service. I think that with the opening of Barcade, the Lamp Post will see more traffic because its added another point of departure nearby.
Dive-y enough to slum it, but just as fun for a real night out.
Local event hosts love this place for their ability to create something with a lot of good energy. Drink specials are on par with the cheapest deals at Lucky 7's, too!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Davis J.Chicago, IL569426260Aug 21, 2014
This is a true dive. It feels dark and damp inside. The music is usually on the hip hop side, which I can really dig because anytime I am here it is one or two drinks before Blackout city.
Boilermakers: 5$ allll day. That consists of a PBR and some crappy whisky. Insider tip, if you ask nicely...they'll magically turn that into Jameson.
Why do I really like it here? Cause you can be as sloppy drunk as you want and they will welcome you with open arms.
The food is clearly directed towards the drunkards too. I usually cant remember what I eat here. Those late night booze munchies always seem to get the best of me. Once, I did remember eating some fries with a side of mac n cheese dip. It was clearly some pureed mac n cheese with a side of piping hot fries. I didn't hate it so dont hate me.
Another thing I love is they have ZERO cell service inside. ZERO. Thats the true calling card of an underground dive. Im also less likely to get recorded breaking it down to some jamz.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Lovet O.Jersey City, NJ285592348Mar 29, 2014
I've ordered take out from here a few times so I can't comment on the Lamp Post bar scene. For being a dive bar, the Lamp Post sure knows how to churn out some pretty good eats.
I've had their penne alla vodka with chicken. OMG!...so good. And their burger is delicious too. The only menu item I didn't like was their chicken fingers. It looked homemade but didn't taste good. But I've ordered other items since then and couldn't be happier. Definitely worth a try.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Austin K.Jersey City, NJ15414062May 24, 2013
I've been here a couple time and I've always had fun. This is second or third bar of the night type of joint. You have a drink or five and you've worn out your welcome at spot number one. They have the basic set up with seats at the bar and high tops to the left. Head to the back and there is more space where a band sets up and if your really lucky. Karaoke.
They do have some drink specials. The most notorious being the PBR and shot of well whiskey for 5 smackaroos. Beware the special. It can turn the second bar of the night into the last bar of the night.
Bars like these are always more fun with the right group of friends and thankfully I surround myself with some bad ass Yelping mofos. Looking forward to the next time I can take advantage of the $5 special. Cheers!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Sara G.Jersey City, NJ2141083Jan 11, 2014
Go early for happy hour (2 for one drinks!) and put 5 bucks in the jukebox! An excellent start to the night.
I must be getting old because any time I've been here late at night, I've hated how crowded it gets so coming early to enjoy this low-key dive is key! Oh, and the fries with mac and cheese sauce? Pretty great!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Miranda B.Jersey City, NJ2245669Mar 25, 2006First to Review
The Spirit of MY WAY LOUNGE is what I feel makes this place as successful as it is. The food and atmosphere are great, home made dishes that are to die for and a nice wait staff.
Great little neighborhood secret!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kristin U.Jersey City, NJ29022911Jan 11, 2013
Tip: Free comedy night second Tuesday of every month at 8PM.
I've been to Lamp Post a few times now. I originally went with a Restaurant.com coupon (I don't believe they still participate), and I followed up with a couple of visits to comedy nights. I think it's a solid neighborhood bar.
The decor is perfectly divey. The bathroom was very clean. The bartenders have always been friendly and patient (I can be a bit indecisive). There is a decent mix of standard beers and craft brews, and when I was REALLY in the mood for wine, I took a gamble on dive bar Pinot Grigio and was satisfied.
The menu offers a pretty good variety of options. I've been very pleased by the string bean salad (with tomato and little balls of mozzarella) and the mac and cheese (which they were nice enough to make without bacon for me). The salad was huge, but I probably should've kept the mac and cheese to myself, as sharing left me hungry for more deliciously salty carbiness.
Bonus: Around the holidays, they had one of those little trees with tags on it so you could buy a gift and donate it to a person or organization in need. I like seeing local businesses helping out the community like that :)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
