OMG ...sorry Spuds...sorry I always went to you for my fish and chips cravings when I could have been going to SUNFISH!!
Such freshness, taste, and abundance. My oysters were as plump as they could be..and the fries perfectly cooked.
And! There was this magical vinegar with garlic and peppers and...magic? I put on everything
mmm definitely coming back soon.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 167198294Feb 23, 2024
One of my favorite places for fish and chips. The fish is always battered to perfection which means more fish than batter. The food is always served piping hot. This time I decided to try the oyster basket and it did not disappoint. They were very generous with the portions of fries. I love how they had garlic vinegar on the side which is a game changer. The chowder was what caught me off guard because it was so good and rich. The chowder had tons of clams in it too. The location is nice and they have outside seating so that you can see the water as you eat. The service was lacking where the folks working there were just trying to get through the day. We didn't mind though since it is more of a order, pick up, quick bite and go. Parking will be tough since it is all street parking.

The bomb diggity!
Lets get the one negative out of the way. These greek brothers refuse to upgrade their credit card dial up service, so if you're paying by card, wait for that 26k modem to activate, make the phone call to the bank and after like 2 minutes, your payment will go through. This can be painful because a line can form easily because of this.
Why is this the best fish n chips around? Particularly the Cod? (Not a fan of Halibut). Its breaded perfectly, no oil and PIPING HOT!!! and Juicy!!! If you got a sensitive mouth, better wait a minute or two before taking that first bite, massive warnings to ya!!! How can it be so hot, yet so juicy and still tender at same time? What type of voodoo is this? Just remember, order the Cod n Chips, we actually always skip the fries, you also get charged less if you say no fries. We only have time for the good stuff, the Cod, the Prawns, Oysters, Chowder etc. We keep meaning to try the skewers, soon, one day.
Additionally, the famously sometimes temperamental brothers that own the place seem to have softened up a bit. I never had a problem with them, but I am sure their temperament in the past could have garnered some bad reviews.
I'm so glad they survived Covid and the bridge closure. A true GEM!!!
Get the Cod!!!Helpful 15Thanks 3Love this 15Oh no 0Jul 10, 2017Previous reviewThis review is LONG OVERDUE. Been here a ton of times and for one reason. The COD is the best I have had in Seattle. It is flaky, moist, perfect flavor, and piping HOT when served.
NOTE: You can order any dish here without fries for $1 less.
NOTE: The two brothers who own the joint are friendly, but they sure won't show it. Many reviews that mention their lack of "outwardness" are correct. I chalk it up to them being there EVERYDAY, 6 days a week. If you talk to them a bit they will come out of their shell a bit, good lads, they work hard.
The Chowder is excellent. Way better then Spuds or Ivar's. If you're the type that loves a ton of butter and cream in their chowder, don't go here. The chowder here has a bit more substance and seafood essence to it.
I am not a fan of halibut in general, so I wasn't surprised I didn't like it here. The fries are forgettable also.
Calamari is delicious though pricey. $12.99 for calamari is more for a sit down "nicer" type of restaurant, but boy did it taste good.
Need to try the oysters still.
The items on the menu are a bit pricey. If you're loose with ordering, a party of 6 can easily be near/above $100.
This place is a gem because it is on the end of Alki and just away from all the herds of people. Grab your COD and Chowder, eat in, eat out, take it right across the street and enjoy it on lush greens!
My 4 Stars are for the cod and the chowder. Dab it with their Malt Vinegar and Garlic, splash with TAPATIO, that's it. Enjoy!!! - Aj K.Newport, OR04827Feb 27, 2024
I can't believe this place isn't recommended in all the guides for Alki! Everything is fresh and delicious, best clam chowder we've had in a while. I got the combo with cod, every type of seafood was exceptional. Definitely get extra tartar sauce too!!

So bummed to give this place a negative review, but it sounds like we had a very similar experience to one of the other reviewers on here.
We were in the process of ordering and saw that we were being handed little cups of tartare sauce. Neither of us are big fans (personally prefer lemon/vinegar on our fish n chips), so we said that we didn't need any. Immediately we were asked, "tourists?" We're not tourists, nor should that matter. From then on the service seriously lacked. We continued to be polite (smiling, please, thank you, etc.), but got little-to-no response and felt like we were being judged for everything we did. When our food was ready, we also weren't acknowledged or told it was ready, despite waiting right there. It seemed like we were no longer welcome because we don't like tartare sauce?? Thinking back, we should have just taken the cups and thrown them away to avoid all of this, but that felt wasteful. We ended up eating outside, and that was nice, but overall it was not a good experience.
TLDR: the fish was good, the chips were good, wish there was lemon/vinegar. Don't let them know you don't like/want tartare sauce. Unfortunately, we won't be returning due to the service.Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - Vitaliy T.Auburn, WA62168Mar 22, 20241 check-in
I visited sunfish for the first time and I really enjoyed their cod fish and chips. The cod was delicious, tender and juicy with light breading. Fry's was kind of bland but malt vinegar fixed that problem. The tartar sauce was ok nothing special to my taste, it tasted more like mayo. To me the sauce has to elevate the flavor of the fish but instead it overpowers the fish. Clam chowder was nice creamy and tasted good. The atmosphere is great and enjoyable to be there. The service was friendly and fast. And the person taking the order was amazing, friendly and easy to talk to. Definitely worth checking this place out.

Older gentleman scrolling through Facebook while I waited a good minute until his coworker told him to look up. Not a great start.
The food itself was subpar. The breading on the fish was soft and soggy. The fries were limp and unseasoned. Almost felt like the fryer wasn't up to the proper temperature and the food was cooked in warm oil.
To top things off, there was an "Unmask America" sticker on the fridge behind the counter.
I'll be sticking with Spud in the future.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - Hunter K.Seattle, WA0112Mar 12, 2024
