South's is the best in the Nacho game. The nachos are humongous. You've been warned.
I've shared these bad boys twice with friends. I don't know what possessed me to think I could handle these on my own today, but I'd been craving them since yesterday so I thought I stood a chance.
I didn't even make it a quarter of the way through. I took what was practically the entire plate to go in a container and carried the bag which felt like it was holding a small child and went back to work.
I'll be returning again for you nachos. But this time, with help.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 22, 2010
Don't be like me and walk right past this place when I was looking for it. The sign "South" must have thrown me off since I was looking for "South Bar."
The place is cute inside, with old movie theater seats at some of the tables. The waitress was friendly and told us to seat ourselves where ever we wanted...until we sat ourselves at the round table by the front. Apparently it's where ever BUT there, lol.
I had a difficult time choosing something from the menu since everything sounded good. I ended up with an item off their specials - Fettuccine Alfredo with Chicken - and was happy with my choice. I will definitely come back to try their veggie burger...or chicken pot pie...or mac and cheese...or...Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - D H.Corona Del Mar, Newport Beach, CA369334331Sep 9, 2020
I started this review back in 2015, but I am just getting around to finishing. However, since the place is closed, this review is only to document where I've been.

I came here for lunch with some coworkers. Staff was nice and we were seated and given menus right away. The seats were interesting. They were old theater seats, it was cool. I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich. Little did I know that it would be two full sized chicken breast stacked on top of each other. I had to cut it up just to eat it but it was really good. My coworkers also really enjoyed their meals.I would quickly come here again for lunch.

For the lovers of bar food, this place hits the mark. Located far and away from the usual drunken hangouts, South's bar offers huge meals at a decent price.
After seeing many Yelp pictures, had to order the Nachos ($14 for veggie). HEAPING pile of chips, beans, cheese, sour cream, guac, and enough peppers to make your eyes water. Despite my best attempts, could not finish the whole thing, even as soggy leftovers at home and with help. Not a huge variety in beer - your basic list on draft at $7 a pop.
Service here is solid, and even accommodated my friend needing to charge her phone. For the area, this is your best bar bet.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kristen L.Boston, MA46345124Oct 5, 2017
Yes to the most overwhelming plate of nachos I have ever had in my life. Yes to happy hour prices for Irish sours (your traditional whiskey sour with a kick). Yes to open and spacious decor and a friendly and helpful waitstaff. Yes to South's Bar.
My friend and I got here around 5-5:30PM on a Friday night, and the place was just the right amount of lit before the pre-weekend rush. Our waitress was helpful and patient, and we enjoyed it so much we were there for about 3 hours.
The nachos are UNREAL. It was honestly the largest plate of food I have ever had in my life and I was sharing it with my friend - we were both stuffed to the gills after finishing off that plate. It's basically like a taco exploded onto a plate but who's complaining? And for the price, it was really a steal.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 14, 2015
Came here with pretty much an entire audience after an event with my friend's theater group late on a Saturday night, and the place was relatively crowded to begin with. I was incredibly impressed with how dexterously the bartender (Jason) managed the huge crowd pretty much all by himself amid the blitz of drink and food orders and the cacophony of general merriment. We spoke to him a great deal late in the night when the place was closing, and he was incredibly entertaining once he had time to speak - just a great, friendly and incredibly capable barkeep.
The food was quite good for bar fare - the Four Cheese Mac and Cheese was quite tasty, but when the heaping plate of nachos that my friends ordered came out, I was incredibly jealous. But I bade my time well, and got to pick some off when everyone else's stomach gave out. I tend to stay away from nachos because they are so hit-and-miss depending upon how stingy a place is with the toppings - don't make that mistake here!
Very no frills kind of place - not a specialty cocktail kind of place or craft beer mecca, but a nice spot and good atmosphere to enjoy well-made drinks and solid food.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Gina C.Manhattan, NY87360Apr 10, 2016
Came here for lunch on a weekday -
They have a decent set of lunch specials at an ok price, especially for that area. However, I was pretty disappointed in the surcharges that they added for my burger. I had to pay extra for literally every single topping - including cheese.
I think I paid close to $15 for a burger that was originally priced around $12. The burger tasted fine, but had I known that there would be so many add-ons, I would've had lunch elsewhere with clearer pricing.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brian C.Austin, TX841402020Apr 11, 2017
One thing that befuddles me being from Texas is how the northeast has managed to outdo us atsomething that is a staple back home, that being nachos. I guess maybe becuase it's a bar food? Needless to say I got the nachos here, and the pictures on here convey just how tasty and gigantic they really are! It certainly isn't for one person and is perfect for sharing, and would especially be geat to eat while watching the game. For overall quality I'd say these are the best I've had in the city, good pile of chips, not too much cheese (which is shreaded and not the fake gooey cheese, huge bonus), generous amount of guacamole, and a good compliment of diced tomatoes and jalapenos.
So much of the menu looked delicious, and I definitely want to try out the popcorn shrimp, which is never on menus for some reason! The bartenders are pretty cool too, strike up easygoing converstaions, and are hospitable. All in all, if you're looking for a solid bar at a very reasonable price you've got you're place, because this is better than just your normal bar fair.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sung K.New York, NY25362361Mar 2, 2018
Does it piss you off too when you pick up a tortilla chip out of the nachos that you ordered but you ONLY get the chip?
Yea, that won't happen here. The perfect platter of nachos does exist.
Come here and you won't regret it.
Come here drunk and get the nachos... then you definitely won't regret it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
