This is a review for the new Screenland Crossroads Theatre. I've previously reviewed the Tapcade area (on the Tapcade page), but this is for a separate visit in which I went to see a movie there finally in the Screenland Crossroads zone.

First off, I was very excited to hear that Screenland Crossroads was playing a movie that I had been hoping would come to KC (Goodnight Mommy). They are also the only theatre currently playing it in the KC area. I decided I needed to finally check out the theatre there and go see it this last Sunday. Buying tickets is easy. You get them from the hostess stand right when you walk into the Tapcade area. The theatre has two entrances/exits. One is to the right of the bar area and the other is to the left (near the restrooms). The theatre itself has a very nice set up. It's small (4 rows of seats), but seat is comfy and you have a bar top all the way across. The walls have some fun movie cult-movie themed pop art on them. It's a full-service theatre as well. Like Drafthouse, you write your orders on a slip and set them up in order to get food/drinks. I had the nachos (ridiculously huge for $9! Be prepared to share or to give up, haha) and my husband had a burrito and the cookies. The cookies take a little time to come out, but they're warm and soft (worth the wait). We had no issues getting waters brought to us and they were even refilled about halfway through the film without having to ask.

The bills weren't brought out until the credits started. This was unusual (as I'm used to them coming out at similar theatres about 15 mins till the end of the film), but I actually liked it. When the bills come out during the movie, you end up being distracted during parts of the film that you should be paying attention to. The waiter we had was very good and manned the theatre alone (to be fair there were probably only about 12 people in the theatre).

Now the downside... the french fry maker! Oh my gosh was this a terrible idea! So, maybe halfway into this quiet suspenseful film, there came a jarringly loud thumping/scraping noise from the back wall. It continued on.. and on.. and on.. and everyone was turning in their seats to try and figure out what was happening. My husband finally got annoyed enough and took the initiative to hunt down the source of this ridiculously loud noise. Turns out it was some kind of potato-to-french-fry wall press. I guess this press is attached to the wall of the theatre from the other side and a kitchen worker decided to break down a lot of potatoes mid-screening. I don't know if this happens every hour or so every day or what.. I'm hoping this was just a screw up and that they had to either; A: make some fries in a hurry due to running out of already cut-potatoes.. or; B: didn't realize there was a film currently being shown in the theatre. Due to my hopes for this being a screw-up, I'm still giving the experience 4 stars. If I go back for another movie and this happens again though, I'll never return. This was very distracting and could potentially ruin the entire film-going experience.

Thank you, Screenland, for providing a safe haven from the annoying and predictable attraction previews one must endure to simply sit through a film at most locations. You know, extreme violence and narrative by a guy with an impossibly deep resonant voice, or the requisite cartoon with a farting cartoon animal character scene for the kiddies. How many years can that be milked? Endlessly, it seems.

The chairs are super comfortable, only exceeded by those at Legends (where you have to endure the previously stated), but those couches! Now there's a grand idea, and booze... What's to not like? And the movie choices, they're the best.

Headed here this weekend, glad it's here, hope it never goes away.

This theater is wonderful. I like the small atmosphere and the fact that they have a bar! Who doesn't like seeing great new and classic movies on a theater screen while having a drink (or two... or three...)?

I went a couple years ago for their screening of Army of Darkness and it was nice to be in a theater with people as dorky as me!

If you want a unique theater experience and a chance to see some older movies on a big screen again, this is definitely a place to check out! Their website posts all the upcoming screenings. Enjoy!

The cozy venue offers a great opportunity to hear films get roasted by local comedians for the CounterClockwise Comedy troupe. I saw Twilight get the comedic roasting treatment, and it was a really fun time.

Come early though so you can grab one of the hard-to-get recliners for the show!

If you've ever watched the Academy Awards and wondered "Where do those animated short films play?" or longed for the communal experience of doing the Time Warp with an entire audience, you should check out the Screenland. This resurrected gem near the Crossroads District offers Kansas City moviegoers some new twists on the traditional indie theater. The theater itself has some nice extras, like wine and beer at the concession stand and a row of plush red recliners - complete with cup holders and plenty of leg room - for the ultimate big-screen experience.

When I checked out their web site, I found out Screenland Theatre & Events is the facility's full name. That makes sense; Screenland touts itself as the perfect place to plan a party or event. Occasionally, the theater coordinates with the Crossroads District to offer a movie tie-in with the First Friday theme of the month.

Since the first Screenland opened at 16th and Washington, the people behind it have reopened two more classic movie houses in the metro - one in Kansas City, KS, and another in North Kansas City. It's promising to see a group reclaim these theaters; it would be a shame to see them razed to make room for generic new buildings with no personality and no past.

Reserved Red Leather seats. As good as it gets right there. Why the hell hasn't anyone else thought to put some lazy boy chairs in theaters. I'd pay the marked up price, wouldn't you?

Saw Amelie with the lady over Valentine's weekend, and it was superb. A bottle of white wine (Francis Coppola), some lovely chocolates from Christopher Elbow, and a nice serving of popcorn.

All in large, an excellent first impression. I'm very glad theaters like this exist, otherwise when will you ever get the chance to catch Casablanca or some other amazing classic film on the big screen? Sorry, bed sheet projectors in the ol' backyard don't count.

Well maintained, superior service and quality, and a nice reminder that you can still enjoy some amazing classic cinema on the big screen.

A word of caution however. Consider giving yourself extra time to get there if you're coming from 670. The Broadway ramp can get really sluggish during Fri-Sun. With the convention center and Crowne Plaza nearby, you never know how slow and stupid some drivers will get.

      First to Review

So, five stars means perfect, right? In this case, it also means quite interesting, in a venue which was once a cold storage warehouse, now converted to a 150-seat (stadium-style seating) movie theater, with space for meetings and other events. The slate of films shown here ranges from good new movies to good vintage movies. Aside from the fact that they serve wine, beer, and mixed drinks, the best thing is there are 11 upholstered recliners in the very best row and if you get there early, or even if you don't but it's a sparse attendance, you can sit in these huge comfy recliners! It's only a block west of Broadway on 17th Street, and there's parking right across the street.

      Nostalgic. Brilliant. Fun.

I met my hero Bruce Campbell at Screenland, so it's hard for me to possibly give this place anything but a gleaming review.

Screenland is unique for so many reasons; reasonable ticket prices, old and new movies, retro/vintage decor, special events, the list goes on. As other reviewers have mentioned, the recliner seating is spectacular if you're early enough to nab it.

Yes, there is truly nothing quite like watching a movie a Screenland, kicked back in a recliner, enjoying a beer.
