Good solid American Chinese food! Very simple and good! We hardly go to the same Chinese place three times because there are so many. But we have been here more than a bunch of times.

I guess my review helped.
They have cut down trees and pruned all the over-grown bushes and landscaped.
From the 2nd review, it appears they got a new fish tank.
Big deal. I still will not return to try the food again.
PS THe Google map is incorrect. The map shows this place on Merrill Ave. The correct location is the Veteran's Memorial Parkway, right off Rt 28, next to Bickford's Grill.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Sep 5, 2006Previous reviewI wanted to go here especially to rate this place. I knew there would be problems but I wasn't expecting the severity of the situation.
The building is a large white Polynesian looking building with a large and dated yellow GRAND CHINA sign.. The building and sign are hard to see from all the overgrown trees and bushes surrounding it.
I know that this restaurant has been in the same family and started in 1976. It looks as though nothing has been updated since then. Inside it is very dark with black and red interior. The red carpet is nearly black!! Also inside right by the door is a small fish tank with two huge coi that have grown way to large for the tank....poor fish.
OK Now to the meal......
We ordered a single Poo Poo platter...the small one. They had like 4-6 different choices here for a POO Poo platter. Pretty hard to screw this up right....well...yeah they did. ..so the guy brought out not one but TWO huge flaming POO POO platters. I tried to tell the waiter that I just wanted the one. After some communication issues I think he got it.
I mean there was enough fried wings and egg rolls for like 20 people.
The items on the platter were very oily and heavy.
For the rest of the meal, I ordered the Hunan chicken and white rice. The hunan chicken was sauteed in a bland non sweet sauce with red chile pepper. It came was pea pods ands carrots which were the best part of the meal.
My friend got the sesame chicken. that was over done and drowned in a sweet sauce. I really think the food would have tasted better if the place was cleaner and updated.
Just being there was a downer. I could not wait to leave.
Here is the review. Don't say I didn't warn you. - Sylvia C.Quincy, MA1874011549Jul 30, 2015
The ratings reflect the mediocre food not the service. The server was helpful and friendly. We ordered the following:
Combo plate - chicken wings, boneless spareribs and crab rangoons with white rice
General gau's chicken
Cantonese rice noodles - equivalent to beef chow foon
Chin liu beef - spicy beef with broccoli
Think the passable items were the chicken wings and spicy beef dish. The general gau's chicken was basically chicken fingers covered in some tangy sauce (nothing like standard versions I had at many restaurants). The boneless spareribs were tough as leather...barely able to cut them up - nevermind eating them. The beef in the beef chow foon was pretty chewy and not thoroughly cooked.
Overall, this place was a missed on our end.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 2684392499Jun 8, 2017
The food was okay. We haven't been here in years. We didn't like the General GAO Chicken. I was not happy with the egg rolls it had a funny odor that was not appetizing. The rice was good it had a lot of bean sprouts which I love. The chicken Lomein was not good. We will not return

Just heard they are closing. I'm not surprised at all. When you make the dining room smaller to accommodate more pool tables it tells you something about the food. I went there for over 10 years and they didn't do enough to keep it clean and presentable so it obviously is going to turn a lot of people off. Then to hear in other reviews about rodents .....ugh.
I will miss the chicken wings but that is about it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 3, 2015Previous reviewI've been going to this place for years. A few years ago they did a renovation that expanded the pool hall and cut the dining room in half so yeah, there are not lines out the door for the food. But to be fair, I think it has to do more with the decor than the food. It's brighter than it used to be but the bathrooms just need to be gutted and the dirty carpet that has been there in the entrance-way for 10 years needs to go. We order the same 3 or 4 dishes usually and find them quite tasty actually and not too greasy. The food has always been consistent for us. The service leaves a lot to be desired - the waiters range from practically mute to barely friendly.
But the one thing that always brings me back is the chicken wings. Could be the best wings I've ever had. First, they are enormous - 3 times bigger than you get at any chain restaurant like TGI Fridays, etc. Second, they are extremely juicy. And last but definitely not least, they absolutely nail the flavor. Seems like a touch of soy, can't say exactly, all I know is I am truly addicted. I contemplate ordering a box of wings to go every time I sit down for a meal there.
Overall - average place, decent food, lousy decor and ambiance, and mediocre service but the wings are to die for. - Jun 14, 2013
Grand China is an old school Chinese restaurant and lounge which still has the feel of the 1970s (when it opened). The lounge area has plenty of pool tables.
The menu offerings include a good variety of the standard Chinese dishes including Szechuan, Hunan, and Cantonese dishes, plus a few Thai dishes. The prices for most main dishes ranges from $10.25 to $16.95. 42 Daily Combination Plates served with appetizers are also offered here (except on NYE), $8.75-$9.95.
I've been to Grand China a few times for takeout only. I've ordered the Combination Plates ($8.75-$9.95 plus tax each) including the Combo 29 Egg Roll, Chicken Fingers and Pork Lo Mein and the Combo 33 Egg Roll, Chicken Fingers, Peking Noodles. The food is usually ready to go in about 10 minutes and the portions are good, enough for another meal!
The egg roll and chicken fingers are deep fried golden, crispy on the outside and not too greasy. The Peking noodles have a mix of ground pork (some fat), green peppers, red peppers, & sprouts in a mildly spicy brown sauce over soft lo mein noodles. IMO, the food I've ordered from here is served very hot and is decent overall.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Adam B.Manchester, NH312226Dec 8, 2015
This place went downhill fast!
We saw out waiter 3 times. Ordering, delivering food, and check.
Food was super dry. Not hot.
Good news was the fortune cookie was prepackaged so they couldn't screw that up!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lindsey V.Long Beach, CA252116Mar 28, 2017

Tried it last night for a quick drink and a couple apps. Bartender didn't know the difference between a egg roll and a spring roll.
The egg roll was old and reheated. I ordered hot and sour soup which needed to be heated more. Tasty but not great.
Wish this place was better.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - James G.Methuen, MA03Apr 15, 2017
