We went back again on Halloween night to Wirtshaus. It was a much slower evening and we got right in.
The same owners were the , John and Pat, working the bar and tables.
Our waitress who resembled a WWF wrestler, took our drink and order promptly.
I ordered a German wheat beer, and John came over and poured for me in a cool German stein, along with a slice of lemon to top it off.
We both order soups, which they later come back to tell us that they ran out of the cream of Potato. The only soup. (We notice that long after they run out that they do not erase it from the special board.
We both order specials (2 kinds of wurst, potato pancakes, and crout. I also got a side of sweet & sour red cabbage which I had before and it all was delicious. A second German beer ( I had trouble deciding, there were so many) and the meal was satisfying and complete.
They do have beer, wine, and special German after dinner appertifes and digestives.
One downer, the men's bathroom is very old and tiny, and had a very strong smell of methane gas, sewer smell. We could smell it all the way back to our table in the dining room.
This was a very difficult review for Wirtshaus. Dennis and I had been wanting to try this German Restaurant for a long while. I had been given a coupon from one of my staff so we jumped in the car and made the short drive down to Hampstead Street.
Let me tell you, that from the outside Wirtshaus's is located smack dab in a suburban neighborhood. It looks like someone's house. Out of place.
We dive up and out back to park and the lot is full. We walk in and it looks like a cross between gramma's house and a summer camp. It had a strange musty & sour smell.
It has beautiful old dark stained wood paneling that has been alligatored from the years. Old pictures with the owners taken back about 40 years ago or more. There were lots of German signs, an and steins about. You could tell that this place has been in business a long time.
In the mean time, there is a line. Several parties crowded into the small hallway that lead to the main dining room. 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 we finally spy the hostess and owner, Pat rushing by again and again. Only after do we make it half way down the hall way she is able to scribble our names and other the other guests down on a old note pad.
The main dining room has 12 booths and 3 tables. The "back porch" dining room has about 8 tables and there is also a special front room for big groups.
One thing that we noticed right away is the Wirtshaus is a small family owned operation that is understaffed. The husband and wife owner manage between hostessing, running the bar, cashing out, busing tables. There are 2 young girls also on the floor waitressing but it was not enough. People were were complaining and asking for their orders all over the place. Some people even got up and left. Dennis and I waited a little over an hour to be seated. When we were FINALLY sat by Pat, we noticed the HORROR. Some people that were seated about 45 minutes before us had still not even ordered the dinner or received their appetizers. We sat about 15 minutes at our table with no one coming over to take our drink order.
WE also noticed a young couple w/ a young child leaving as their meal was still not out. They were seated before us over an hour ago. The owners were apologizing up and down. They appeared flustered.
Now to the food. I got an 18 oz Octoberfest for $4.50 I also has a platter special with was knockwurst's and bratwursts, krout, and potato pancakes. ($12.99) I also got a side of pickled cabbage which was sweet and sour and delicious.
Dennis had a chicken dish on a bed of noodles. He devoured it.
Later, the service improved and we relaxed as our bellies were full of damn good German food. It was a long evening. Too long.
I think I may want to go back on a good night just to see if things improve.
A mixed review overall.

2.5 Stars.
The Hampstead House is yes finally open and the new Greek family is working the tables hard.
The owner, Stefano came around to all the tables and talked up a storm to all the patrons and told them how they want suggestions and comments, and new ideas.
Not sure if he really wanted to here them.
Well Stefano, here ya go.
1. The prime rib was good. It was hot, priced well and seasoned.
2. Please add baked potato to the menu. I don't care for fries with my prime rib. It is not hard to bake a potato.
3. Please add specials to the menu. No specials at all but the waitress reported that the Greek specials are great!
4. The restaurant was clean, service was good.
5. You mentioned local ingredients. Please list on the menu.
6. The chicken parm was very under sauced. We had to ask for more.
We will be back to try breakfast as you offer homemade hash! Yum!

The Chatterbox Cafe is a great little eatery in the same plaza as The Lobster Claw.
The nice roomy interior is homey and comfortable with a big bar, 2 flat screens with local news, and big oversize tables that are tall.
A piano player was playing Christmas music which on this snowy morning made the way for a cheery and festive atmosphere.
They have a full coffee bar serving latte and espresso and more.
Beer, wine, and bloody Marys are also available.
The food was very good. I had the "stuffed skins" which was baked potato wedges stuffed with scrabbled egg and topped with bacon and melted cheddar cheese. Served with a side of fresh salsa and sour cream. This was excellent and very filling.
My friend had a omelet which came with home fries and toast.
Overall a great breakfast. In the same league, menu wise as Mattie's Bagel & Eatery in Salem but bigger and better space.

Howie has come to our place for the last few years to do a general oil heat furnace cleaning.
I guess his service is okay.
He comes on time. His work is efficient and he seems to know what he is doing.
He cleans / vacuums the oil furnace.
Changes the air filter.
Changes the filter on the oil tank.
Checks the piping and air venting to the chimney.
Probably more too.
He is a solo operation. He says he works for another heating company FT and this is his side job.
We paid $130. Our neighbor reports that he knows a guy that charges less.
Go figure.

Eh. It was just ok. The leaders of the group were condescending. Lectured us (4 on our party) on safety, over and over. None of us were unsafe, some pushing ourselves more than others. It was really unnecessary.
We just felt that the group was not for us.
We prefer going out on our own, in our own hood and without the feel of a high school field trip.
