This is a bummer, but it has to be said.
On my recent visit for breakfast, I sat at the bar and ordered my favorite dish - Corned Beef Hash and Eggs with a big, fluffy biscuit and some chocolate milk.
While I was waiting, a man came in and spoke with the owner. This was done in plain view and earshot of everyone in the front room. The man was perhaps in his fifties, dressed in dark clothing and appeared to be "wanting".The discussion was about the man's obligation to finish his work that he already had been paid for.
But it didn't stop there.
The man further asked if there was some work he could do in exchange for some food. At that point, I realized this guy must be hurting financially and may even be homeless. I felt for the guy. I know what it's like to be in that position. I was homeless in Santa Cruz for four years and understand the humility this man went through. The owner helped him out by having him go outside and water the flowers. A very nice gesture on her part.
Here's what bothered me:
A "regular" whose first initial was 'D.' - made a crack about the guy. Now, I know he was only trying to be funny and all that, but it was in bad taste nonetheless. He said, "Here, I'll give you money if you'll F*n leave". The owner, the waitress, 'D', and the man sitting next to me all laughed heartily. Then D went on about how some dude comes into his place of business and begs for help and owes D about $100.00 now. The four of them all seemed to enjoy their conversation and the misfortunes of others.
What bothers me the most, is that I didn't speak up and say my piece. I was far too incensed to open my mouth as I knew I would spew out in anger.
For some reason, the food didn't taste so good that day.
I hope I never see D in there again.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0May 9, 2011Previous reviewAn excellent breakfast/lunch dining experience!
My wife and I found this gem a few years ago and have been in love ever since. The food is always superb. The service is great and given with a smile. The price is so affordable (a treasure in this day and age). And the atmosphere is very comfortable and yet, vibrant.
The tables are set with REAL cloth fabric, which adds to the nice warm feeling I get every time I'm there. The walls and windows are decorated with country-style nic nacs and earth tones. And the chairs are a mix-match of high- and low-back wooden chairs you'd find in a country home or at grandma's house.
So, what about the food? There's nothing to say, except that every time I have been in there, my food was awesome. Whether I ordered the corned beef hash (my favorite - and, it's not that stuff from a can, this is REAL HOMEMADE hash and it's ooh so good), or I order the ham steak breakfast (with the thick slab of moist and TENDER ham), or I'm ordering a hefty sandwich (of many to choose from) - the food has always been satisfying and delicious. The biscuits are huge and soft and warm and with just a little butter, you'll melt in your seat. The home fries are just crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Better than the ones I make at home. Whether the eggs are served over easy or scrambled, they are never too wet or too dry.

The servers (and the owner) have always been friendly (a lot of smiling and happy talk) and they are never in the way of our meal. And we've never had to wait a long time to be seated or to receive our meals.
The restaurant closes at 2:00 PM, so be sure to get there early. (Of course, they're not going to kick you out if you're still eating. They're too polite for that.)
Be sure to check out my photos. I'll add more as we go along. - Robin H.Arcata, CA48182Nov 5, 2014Updated review
Getting a burger in Redding? Are you thinking In N' Out? If you are, you're either insane or have not yet gotten a burger from the Gold Street Cafe. The reason I say this is because Gold Street Cafe has not only has the best burger in Redding, but the best burger I've ever had.
I suggest the California Street Burger, add onion rings and bacon, with the side being macaroni salad. It has the usual lettuce, tomato, and pickles, along with ketchup if you so request it. It also has cheese, mushrooms, guacamole, and if you add bacon and onion rings (make sure to add the onion rings to the burger itself for deliciousness' sake), you will have among the best burgers anywhere. That, with their delicious macaroni salad, makes for an excellent brunch or linner (lunch/dinner).
I've said in a previous review that the lunch here was "average". It's vastly improved since then, so disregard that. (The breakfast is still incredible as well.) So next time you're hungry for a burger, go to Gold Street Cafe!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0May 20, 2011Previous reviewI go to this place a lot, and for a reason. Usually I go here for breakfast (they're better on breakfast than lunch). I always get either strawberry french toast, eggs benedict (which is to die for), or a mushroom-spinach omelet turned into a scramble and olives added to it. This last one is quite modified, and it just shows you how much the servers go out of their way to make the food just how you want it.
If this was a breakfast place, it would be beyond 5 stars. But the lunch is kind of average, so I'm giving this a 4-star rating. - Joe C.Redding, CA025Nov 9, 2010
Quaint , cozy, homey - off to a good start for a breakfast joint/ those are the highlights.
What do I look when I wake up with an appetite that cherrios just can't satisfy?
Coffee: mediocre - never refilled which really didn't matter much - after the first sip I was already thinking of a cup of yaks drip around the block.
Bacon: So chewy I couldn't eat it.
Pecan Waffle: Very tasty - of course anything slather in butter and maple syrup is bound to be delicious.
Hash Browns: For Fu*!s sake! can someone in this town serve something other than processed dehydrated not even still really potatoes.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Maria J.Redding, CA85109627Feb 20, 2013Updated review
Gold Street Cafe has the best stuffed French toast in Redding, hands down!
Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Mar 23, 2011Previous reviewThis restaurant is the best kept secret in town. Actually, it's not a secret anymore...but it is an excellent place for breakfast and lunch. Reasonable prices, very friendlly staff and outregously delicious food! Limited outdoor seating during sunnier days. This place rocks!

If you're up for a traditional breakfast at a coffee shop in Redding, there's no shortage places that serve up gut-bomb plates of eggs, potatoes, and pancakes. Quantity usually has primacy over quality.
Gold Street Cafe is a nice addition to the breakfast scene. The decor is a little too country-kitchen kitch for my tastes, but it's cozy. My spinach and mushroom omelet was right-sized and delicious, and the potatoes were not the grease sponges that they often are elsewhere in Redding's coffee shops. Teacher Lady's scramble was very good; so too youngest offspring's French toast. The service was excellent.
Local celebrity sighting on our way out: "Calabama" alt.county bandleader Brendon Alvord hunched over the counter, getting ready to order a late breakfast.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - J Y.Mililani, HI021Dec 1, 2013
This place was the perfect spot for a early cute breakfast. If your looking for more homey, cozy and friendly atmosphere. .. This place is it. Service was wholesome and happy. The food was real breakfast food, nothing tasted re-heated. All the food tasted as if it came from a home kitchen at grandmas. One of the epic finds here in Redding. CHECK IT OUT

Had the country scramble. Sausage was good but the rest of the dish was not very appetizing. "Country potatoes" had no peppers just burnt spuds. The gravy was some powder combination that had no taste and zero visual appeal.
Can't say I would be back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Wendy H.Redding, CA2550121Mar 28, 2012
I've lived in Redding almost 12 years & went her for the first time today! Walking in, it reminded me of the diners I used to frequent back in New Jersey. It has a real homey feel to me & I just loved it. Everyone we encountered was friendly & attentive. Made us feel like we've been going there for years!
The menu had some nice choices, since we were there for lunch, I chose the reuben with cole slaw & my friend chose the monte cristo with potato salad. The reuben wasn't huge, or fancy in any way, it was simply a very good, not greasy, home cooked sandwich with great flavor. The cole slaw was crisp & flavorful too. My friends monte cristo was also very good & I helped her finish her potato salad which had bacon in it.
I will for sure be back again. Between great service, good prices & good homecooked meals, this place is a winner. Love it!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Steve G.ME, ME72216Mar 3, 2011
Was looking for somewhere for breakfast. Read Ruben review of this place, and decided to give it a try.
OK first the decor as Ruben was spot on...looks like it was decorated from a yard sale..but this is a good thing, it has a very homely feel. Kinda like sitting in someones dinning room.
The waitress was very friendly and we mentioned we found the place using yelp and Ruben's review.
The food was great.. this is what i imagined a home cooked American breakfast would be.
I had the #1 which was Eggs, sausage home fried(?) 2 eggs and toast, and I was stuffed.
3 of us ate there My wife and I and our daughter, and the bill was $25, that is not bad at all, it would cost like $20 in MCD and the food is just not comparable.
Lovely little home town cafe, I will try eating there in the evening to see how that turns out, but for breakfast..I recommend you give them a try.
I have been trying to think of anything I would change ...
The only thing is the size of the OJ WAY to small for me
Oh and PLEASE put in wifi I know its a geek thing, but that would be nice to have that option
I am starting to like this little town of ReddingHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
