I was originally only going to give this place 2 stars because the sushi wasn't really out of this world. In fact, it was just totally unforgettable and pretty expensive. They don't even wrap their sushi in seaweed; instead, they use this light pink waxy tasting paper, which I personally did not like because it doesn't have the same punch of flavor you normally get with nori. The only sushi I really enjoyed was one that came with marinated beef inside - I loved the combination of warm beef, mixed with cold fresh vegetables! Beef in sushi...what's not to like?!
But I will give this place that third star for their dessert alone. I had one of the most magical desserts here! It was chocolate ice cream, strawberries, kiwis, carmelized bananas, crispy pastry pieces, toasted marshmallows and chocolate/raspberry drizzling! This was a modern twist on a complete childhood throwback dessert, which I always find very cool! I especially loved the toasted marshmallows, although they did start to stick to the plate after awhile...so you better gobble this one up quick! But definitely get this dessert if you come here!
Since this is LA, expect to spend at least 10 minutes driving around aimlessly looking for parking, but you can definitely find it - there are some free spots if you drive around enough. They have an outdoor patio area, which is good for people watching and for enjoying the surrounding LA nightlife.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 13, 2010
Oh boy. Once again, this dinner was a bit fuzzy due to the TWO martinis I had. TWO! I must be losing my touch.
We came here last week since someone had a craving for sushi. Not me, I must add. I'm not big on sushi these days, give me meat or cooked fish any day.
It took me 45 effen minutes to drive from the westside to Weho, so when I arrived I ordered a martini as soon as I sat down. LA TRAFFIC KILLS ME! But, it wouldn't be LA without the traffic right?
I had the Sex N Honey martini which consisted of honey vodka, pineapple and cracked black pepper. It was blecchhh.. but I downed it anyway and felt an instant alcoholic euphoria.
The food was nothing special, but we did order TWO plates of BBQ ribs for my daughter who devoured both of them. OK, I had 4-5 pieces total, but damn, she ate those like it was going outta style. I guess the sweetness of the ribs were a good thing.
Sushi rolls were pretty mediocre. The lobster roll tasted more like shrimp and was ehhh at best. Spicy tuna roll was also just okay. My dining companion had the salmon and unagi sushi and he said he liked it, so you'll just have to go on his opinion.
Oh, forgo the fried dumplings. They were not good at all. Just get the ribs and some martinis and you'll be good to go.
Since I didn't much care for the Sex N Honey, I ordered a Lychee martini and it was 50 times better. When in doubt, stick with what you know. Lesson learned. Lychee martini hit the spot! I was buzzing good after 2 sips. I probably didn't need to finish the whole drink, but I'm not one to waste alcohol.
Service was pretty good and the ambience tended towards a clubby/loungey scene. They blasted hip hop and top 40 music from those speakers. At some points, I had to yell during my conversation. Or maybe I had to yell because I was drunk? We'll never know.
Dinner was about $130. Not cheap, food was mediocre, but I'd come back just so my daughter could have more ribs. Oh ya, lychee martinis for me!

My buddy and I popped in for Happy Hour today, after a gorgeous Los Angeles spring day (80F) of lounging by the pool drinking Malibu and Coke. Can't think of anything more deserving of a Happy Hour treat than that. Anyway, he was treating so I was eating.
Popped into the back bar area around 6:45pm. It was a warm day, as I said, and the back bar wasn't air conditioned, it was a bit uncomfortably toasty, especially for a sushi bar, which is generally (for some reason) a cooler environment.
The ambiance was aesthetically pleasing, but something about the fish smell with the warm stuffiness didn't bode well for me. I'd have appreciated the AC cranked up a bit and the door closed. The servers were nice enough, though not overly attentive. A few times we had to flag them down to get their attention, and it wasn't overly busy. Not bad service, just nothing standout about it either.
Because it was happy hour, it was $40 for the two of us for a round of drinks and a few happy hour sushi selections. I can imagine that you'd drop an easy $30pp if it wasn't happy hour, minimum.
The sushi itself was pretty standard fare. Nothing 'popped' and impressed me, though it was perfectly serviceable. I enjoyed it, but for the money, I think I'd probably check out another place first, or go to one of my other regular places. It was pretty and convenient, but pricey and mediocre.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Aug 21, 2007
**My friend who took me to Fat Fish is good friends with the owner**
I haven't spent much time in WeHo recently but I remember there being a fair amount of mediocre food but Fat Fish does not fall into that category! Not too crowded (we could easily get a table at 8:30 on a Friday night) with fast service and great food.
The decor is low-key - dim lighting for a romantic date....or even just for catching up with friends. They have outdoor seating which is probably great most of the year in L.A. but it was WAY too hot this weekend.
We ordered the tuna special of the day, the beef tataki and the seven-layer tuna tower (or something like that). Everything was excellent. I was a little concerned about the tuna special of the day - it was lots of tuna sashimi with a tiny raw egg on top with apple pear garnish around the plate (I don't like eggs that much). We mixed up the egg with the tuna sashimi and went to town - the flavor of the tuna was delicious! I think I could have eaten the beef tataki all day - it was tender, flavorful sliced beef with salad. And the seven-layer tuna tower was tough to eat (vertical foods are always tough to eat) but worth the mess. We didn't make it to the bar in the back - my friend says it's great - but I had a yummy kiwi martini at the table.
For all of the food we had (I was totally stuffed), it wasn't cheap but it wasn't too bad - ~$75. Next time I'm in WeHo, I'll be back at Fat Fish.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Sabrina C.Long Beach, CA1225418Jan 12, 2008
SERVICE: this place treated me and my friends well. we did a girls night here and made reservations on a friday night at 8:00. due to rain and traffice, all of us were running late (as usual), so they had no problem pushing our reservation back to 9pm. and we were running even MORE late, and they said it was no problem, they will still hold our table for us. (maybe because it was not a busy night, but either way, they were VERY polite over the phone). right when we sat, they took our drink orders, remained attentive throughout the night( refillilng waters and clearing our table to avoid clutter), and did not even rush us at all.
FOOD: everything was reasonably priced and delicious. for a hip and trendy-ish place like this, the quality of the food was not over priced at all. i ordered the STUFFED TOMATOES, NUTTY ROLL, and LAS VEGAS ROLL. my friends had the HAMACHI CARPACCIO and BISTRO ROLL, 7-LAYER TUNA TARTAR. (pics posted). i didn't taste the other stuff we got (FATASS ROLL, FAT WRAP, etc) but i didn't hear any complaints from the rest of the party. the hamachi carpaccio was to die for, as well as the stuffed tomatoes. you could tell that the seafood was fresh and good quality throughout all of our courses.
DRINK: after only having fruit and poptarts during my entire day, 2 sips of the TOKYO TONIC got me good and tipsy. we also ordered a bottle of sake, which they served to us chilled, and was good enough for 3 shots each between 7 girls. i also had the SATSUMI MARTINI (another special of the nigth) which was perfect and light, and still got me good and tipsy-er. i also tried the PEAR-A -DISE drink which was strong but delicious. descriptions of most drinks are on the website, but they sure do got a lot more than whats on that site. LYCHEE MARTINI was wonderful as well.
AMBIANCE: very cute. small restaurant, but a good place to enjoy dinner with friends, or a date. the lounge in the back was cozy.
overall, the bill came out to less than $60 bucks per person. keep in mind we ordered about 2-3 items each on the menu, plus drinks. and it also included tax and tip.
must try it if your in the area shopping, or want to try sushi outside your neighborhood. also, its LA, so you'll most likely have to pay for parkingHelpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Hana K.CA, CA383226May 16, 2007
I've been to Fat Fish about three times now, and I've had great experiences all three times. The restaurant definitely has a cool Hollywoody vibe to it, and you can enjoy your food indoors or out.
The waiters were friendly, and the service was on the good side. There were times when service was slow, but, like not slow to a point where you get irritated.
The menu is mostly comprised of fusion rolls. You'll have fun picking the roll to eat, because they all have funny/quirky names like..the 'Fat Ass' roll. Haha. They also have other unique rolls such as the 'nutty' roll --almonds sprinkled rolls and the Firecracker roll. I really liked the firecracker roll, becauses it was SPICY! :) It came with this special hot dipping sauce...very HOT, but being the Korean that I am...perfect roll for me! :) Yummy.
Aside from the rolls, what keeps me going to Fatfish is their albacore tuna salad. I LOVE IT! It's basically a salad of greens with slices of barely cooked tuna slices. The dressing for this salad is very delicious. It's kind of salty and spicy and sour -oil dressing...i know, it's strange...i don't know how they do it.
...Omg. I just looked at their online menu, and I can't find the salad anymore! It used to be under the appetizers, and was called something like Albacore Tuna Salad (different from the seven spice one under 'salad')...Did they change their menu?
...ok then I guess I won't be going there anymore. boo :( haha
man..i don't even want to finish this review anymore, I'm depressed. Overall, good vibe...cool rolls...not that pricey...valet is pricey, so find street parking...and no more salad! bye fat fish.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 76331071Feb 17, 2008
No real essence of sushi. Great ambiance, location, and pretty people, but Sushi overpriced and NOT at ALL FRESH. Though I did like the creativity of some of their rolls.
Most memorable experience. Our waiter commented "Wow you guys sure do know how to eat". I guess the normal patrons at the weWHORE establishment don't eat very much since they all have to watch his/her figures. I found it to be hilarious since the waiter was refreshed to see people who actually eat and/or enjoy food.
They need to offer sushi on Hawaiian crispy rice squares.
Sashimi was not fresh at all and was glazed in food coloring and corn syrup to give the sashimi a fresh appearance while giving it a weird texture.
They have wonderful happy hours at the West Hollywood, CA Fat Fish. I like the Koreatown location, but the parking is terrible.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Van W.San Francisco, CA464118Dec 28, 2007
We're doing a pre-celebration dinner for my friend's 30th birthday on Christmas Eve so of course, we had the whole back room to ourselves for the first hour that we were there. Needless to say service was SUPERFAST but we weren't being rushed at all despite them wanting to close shop early for the evening. The bartender/waiter was great and made us the BEST Pear-fect Crush drinks (has pear vodka) and I lost count how many we had. Food was delish especially the firecracker roll with the spicy habanero sauce - it's like a little bit of mexican in the sushi. :) I don't think I've had a bad item here ever.
I've also been to the K-town location in October and you can BYOB with NO corkage fee. So if you don't like paying all that much for drinks, you should go there instead cuz menu is the same and the kitchy decor makes you feel like you're in some pop video.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Amy S.Los Angeles, CA355308157Feb 5, 2011
Fat Fish is the kinda place you take your co-workers, a small group of friends or your cool uncle.
A hidden sushi secret that locals love. I had forgotten how much I had liked this place. I had first gone to Fat Fish with some co-workers for their happy hour in the lounge about 5 years ago. I remembered loving their little lounge area and the cute bartenders.
Yesterday, when looking for an inexpensive, hip, non pretentious, sushi restaurant to chill and drink some sake with my BFF, I remembered Fat Fish! I am so glad that I did.
Apparently they have "happy hour" prices all the time now. Oh yeah! Most of the rolls and drinks are 50% off and OMG the drinks are delicious. The Lychee Martini is quite perfectly made here, among others like prickly pear margarita. A bottle of sake will run you about 5-6 bucks! The prices here are so great, I almost felt as if they made a mistake on my bill.
The rolls are very american-casual-sushi. Lots of tempura-fried rolls, "caviar" and almost every roll has avocado in it. We tried the Fat ASS, LA Roll, Sakura Roll and Ichi Roll. All were very good.
I would definitely recommend reservations on the weekends, but the lounge/bar is also an option as it is first come first served and they do serve food in there. We waited about 25 minutes on a Saturday night for a table. Not too bad.
The people next to us were dolled up and on a date. I was dressed up, my friend was more casual, in a sweatshirt and sneakers and I ran into a friend who was here with her dad. It's that kinda place. Everyone's welcome.
Oh, and give yourself lots of extra time to find parking b/c 8 bucks for valet is a little ridiculous cousin Larry.
Fat Fish, I forgive you though, because you give complimentary edamame! Woot woot!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 7, 2010
First time eater....long time fan...
Actually....no that's not it....just heard from a friend to try this place out...=P
It was worth it....great service...well at the Happy Hour area towards the back....had the bartenders cater to our needs...good looking guys btw if you're into eye candy....hah
Surprisingly when we got our bill, it was uber affordable....normally good sushi is more pricey....but with the Happy Hour prices in effect, we spent about 40 bucks total....with drinks a few rolls and some other sushi on the side....
Hey what can I say....it was totally worth it...and when you're done...you could always walk to the Abbey for more drinks woot!
Oh try the Fatass Roll....really tasty
