Take-Out: The lone waitress described in earlier reviews was there. 3 stars. She was...unprofessional: she was on the phone while regulars were there, had this emotionless dead face that pierced your soul, didn't give me radishes, lime, and hot sauce with my tacos, which were delicious. Which leads me to...
Delivery: Guy on the phone was nice. Food came really quick. I ordered 3 chorizo tacos and 3 lengua tacos, which came with radishes, lime, and salsa. The meat fillings were very tasty, juicy, and so flavorful- cheap too!

I'm definitely getting delivery from them in the futureHelpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Eric S.Brooklyn, NY7414541Dec 18, 2008
I'll give this place three stars, This is because although the food here is the most authentic mexican joint on the church ave block between Ocean Parkway and McDonald road, the waitress treated me like I had pissed in her cheerios that morning.
I understand service jobs can suck some serious donkey balls, but lady when I'm being as sweet as a lime ricky and your treating me pricky - I'm going to get annoyed. Go with the take out service if you want decent mexican food.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Macky C.Brooklyn, NY615Jun 19, 2008First to Review
For the area, its decent authentic Mexican food. They do take out, Delivery, and you can dine in if need be. The people are cool, the delivery is prompt, and there Hrs. are impressive.
I only gave it three stars, because I keeps it real. =]
Having been brought up on great traditional Mexican cuisine (mama), the bar is understandibly higher, and so i judge accordingly.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jenna S.Brooklyn, NY6751Jul 14, 2009
Really 2.5 stars.
I had it a few times when I was living in Kensington, dining in.
Its true the waitress seems to have an attitude, but I think she just doesn't speak much English and doesn't know how to respond.
The food was decent. If I were to go back again (which I doubt will happen since I don't live nearby anymore) I would order my bean tacos without lettuce. The lettuce they use tastes like its from a bag of iceberg by dole. Yuck.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - bridget e.Brooklyn, NY27147593May 7, 2009
unlike sparrow hawk, aka ged, i was not attacked by kargs. it was not a life transforming experience.
on a more prosaic note, i had the tacos.
taco # 1 carne asada: pretty good but nothing exclamation pointable.
taco# 2 al pastor: the meat was alright, but the seasoning was off, as though it had been prepared from a powdered mix.
taco #3 carne enchilada: this was a clone of the el pastor. it wasn't spicy at all and i found this more than a little disappointing.
they were generous with the taco accoutrements, especially the cilantro and i love me some cilantro!Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Carlos Y.Brooklyn, NY03Jul 11, 2009
El Gavilan is the best Mexican restaurant in Kensington. I am originally from Morelos, Mexico, so this food is different than the one from my state. The people who work there are from Puebla. However, they have master the Torta al Pastor (Mexico City style) get it without lettuce. The tacos de carnitas are also excellent. The service is good, but sometimes it can be loud in there, that is why I do not give them a five star.
If you are vegetarian they will accommodate for you, the head cook understands to cook stuff separately, so their frijoles negros don't have that lard taste.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mel N.West Haven, CT0394Jan 16, 2009

Found this place by accident. Great enchiladas! I have lived in Mexico and this was pretty close to what I used to get there!

NOTE!!!! This rating is only for their cheese enchiladas, because it's all I order & really some of the best I have ever had. The portion is literally like *at least* 2 full meals. I always go w/ the green (tomatillo) sauce. Good beans and rice (the rice is occasionally a bit salty depending on who's in the kitchen, but forgivable b/c the rest is sooo goood). They pile everything on like it's the night before the apolalypse. Very fast delivery.
I've tried some other stuff here...not a fan. Try the cheese enchiladas.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Andrew G.Breezy Point, NY466614Nov 30, 2011
Had dinner here Sunday and was disappointed. What everyone else said about the lone waitress is true, she's terrible. The TV in the dining area was blasting a Mexican news station, I had to ask her if she could do something about it and she lowered it. The steak mexicana was like eating little pieces shoe leather, my girlfriend had the fajitas and they were average at best. The positives: the chips and salsa verde were free and good, the sangria was good and generous and the owner seemed like a nice guy but I would not go here again under any circumstances. There's a sushi place across the street that looked like it offered a good deal, spend $30 and get a free bottle of saki. I'll be trying that next time.
