a little kiwi bird told me that kiwiana are "quirky things that contribute to a sense of nationhood, that include cultural icons and kitsch. " while i did come away with some yelp cultural icons and kitsch*, courtesy of the yelp nation, i think kiwiana is more kitcheny than kitschy.
after a long hiatus from yelp, at the urging of my lovely cyber daughter lisa a., i pushed that red rsvp button. i'm certainly glad i did! i was ecstatic to see some old yelp friends including matteo, jamel , the host supremo, peter d. and his lovely senorita.
we were decidedly spoiled rotten at kiwiana.
a big thumbs up to bailey, who came bearing lovely gifts of royal caliber. among my favorites were the airy beet concoctions, the briny curried mussels, and the tempura-like oysters.
the moscow mule made me as pleased as punch.
it was rather droll when Marc, the chef, jumped up on the counter and spoke!
an immense thank you to the kiwiana for bringing some new zealand panache to brooklyn, and to peter d. for enabling us ocd foodophiles to indulge in more multicultural brooklyn food adventures!

granted repair people must climb over fences and hack away at remnants of slash and burn agriculture.
i thought brooklyn wasn't a 3rd world country.
but the cable has been spliced and diced for 1/2 a century now
and the dreaded words from the let's reinvent the wheel agent emerge, "you need the cable guys".
well really- what a big surprise.
enough already.

sadly though,
the hummus was not my kind of hummus. it was light and airy, spring-like.
unfortunately though, i am a fancier of a more hearty hummus, one that screams of tahini, so none of mimi's hummus for me.

we went twice last weekend. in fact, i could eat here, every day for months on end, and never tire of it!

it was hot, and we didn't want to cook. we wanted to avoid 4th of july traffic.
and of course, david m. and lisa q. said it was good, in fact lisa q. said it was "the best restaurant in the world." it looked good, smelled good and tasted good. goodness gracious it was good!
simpatico alert!
here's what we had:
pork soup dumplings - excellent! the broth was extravagantly rich. i do wish there had been more soup and less pork, because i enjoy the soup dumpling eating ritual.
dan dan noodles- a new food for me, and an interesting taste, i enjoyed it however i'm not a big fan of ground meat usually.
tasty sichuan dumplings- man oh man they were GOOD!
ma po tofu- oh so very yummy!
garlic pork- tasty but hello too fatty rich dirty old mannish.
tea-smoked duck- glorious. even more glorious the next day.
interestingly, nothing was too spicy.
my only quibble was the heavy handedness with the salt. and i like salt.
