What a joke.
Let me summarize.
-- Overrated
-- Over-priced
-- Just visualize this: "A place for vegans to try any sort of fish or meat for the first time. Even the cod is tasteless and overcooked and bland, and obscured with absurdly huge heaps of random fruits and vegetables. It's laughable at best."
And for the rest of my review, I'll just cut & paste a response I sent another reviewer here on yelp, who also had the same experience that I did. Why re-invent the wheel?:
Just wanted to say! -- I just took my wife to Roger's Gardens (California) for our anniversary. She always wanted to go there. I looked at pics on yelp and thought it would be a hit. BUT it was horrible. Now, I'm looking at low-starred reviews here on yelp, and yours resonated 100% ! Yes, we got the cod as well, and it was also tasteless... and yes, everything is covered with mounds of vegetables and fruit... it's like this place is for Vegans who don't know what fish or meat taste like, so this is their "entrance drug." EXCEPT... the "first one" isn't free. This place is outrageously overpriced. The drinks, also, are NOTHING to write home about. Drinks are $17 and above, and very very mediocre. My first $17 drink tasted like a shot of Lemonade. My second one like cough syrup (that was the "alcohol forward" one... but alcohol is not what made it taste bad...). My wife had the duck... and although it was cooked correctly, the flavors were VERY funky. Any duck flavors were completely obscured with absurd heaps of vegetables, random sauces, and fruit. Also... we were gifted a dessert for our anniversary. It was unexpected. And also, it was a huge blob of slimy whipped cream with a cracker stuck in it & a candle. Absurd. I'm not trying to be ungrateful. But, this is just weird and not good business.
$200+ later, we will NOT be back. Even if this was $50 out the door, we wouldn't be back.
One of our best experiences ever at South of Nick's, San Clemente.
But, first, let me get a quick concern out of the way -- dogs in the restaurant. This is the first time I've seen a dog in this restaurant. I hope it's not the gateway to a new trend here. The dog was wearing the "Service Dog" label, but it obviously wasn't a service dog, OR a very bad one at that, as it was very scared, apprehensive, and seemed volatile. I wasn't pleased that it was lurking about a few feet from me. I heard the owner telling his buddies that, "the dog is apprehensive/on edge." Poor dog! Not his fault. No reason for people to bring their dog into a restaurant like this. YES, I know there are "laws" protecting "service animals" (and unfortunately, this allows the rule-breakers to become even MORE entitled...), so I do understand that SON's can't refuse them service based upon someone bringing a pet in. BUT, I have seen other establishments maintain a tough stance/attitude on "no animals allowed" WHILST maintaining a solid legal standing and not taking on any liabilities.
This all being said... this was one of our best visits. KUDOS to new/fresh/ongoing management for bringing about "real changes" that are more than just SNO's (shiny-new-objects, aka "reduction of customer fatigue")!
-- Presentation of dishes is much better now. Enchiladas are plated differently, as well as is the Sea Bass (different serving dish). Portions are more generous than before, and the 'sides' are also more generous, while still being very reasonable and not too much.
-- Drinks -- much much better than before. Previously, I had left a review which highlighted that the amazing drinks had become minuscule and with tons of ice. Well, that was apparently an "off-day" and management addressed it immediately. It was apparent in that our multiple drinks were all FANTASTIC, in regard to both serving size (aka normal, the way it should be), as well as drink recipe.
-- Food was prepared perfectly; all the dishes we ordered. Chips were also hot and fresh. Salsas were spot-on and not too old as well. Limes were fresh. Matcha salsa was balanced, and not just oil as sometimes happens when someone is being careless.
-- Sever -- very professional, attentive, and efficient! Everything was brought on time and paced out perfectly. A few "special requests" were accommodated immediately, and without any drama. Everything was smooth. Couldn't ask for better.
Since our last visit, we have both seen real and tangible improvements all-around here. Great job, management! We are impressed and will be back sooner than later.
This location has been consistent over the years. My wife and I love to go here. There was a slight "speed bump" with drinks on our last visit, however management addressed the issue in a professional, efficient, and timely manner. My wife and I are excited that South of Nick's San Clemente cares about their operations and their customers' feedback. We will be back soon.
Question to management!:
Ugh! Whyyyyyy did you take tres leches cake off menu? Was the best in California!
Whyyyyyy did you remove the "Jefe" platter??? Was soooooo amazing!
Whyyyyy can't the servers bring a chipotle pepper, even if it IS one out of a can?? It's noooot "too spicy"! Argh!!!! The "chipotle sauce for chicken" is awesome, but not spicy chipotle!
We love SON's, but sad these changes have been made :(
As a general principal, in my own business, I don't REMOVE good things.... To make change..... I only ADD them...
Is this location under new ownership of management, by chance?....
This place is amazing. Food & Drinks are always 5 stars!
My only criticism (management, please take note)!: Corn tortillas at a Mexican Restaurant should NOT cost extra. Here at S.O.N.'s they are $2.00 for only 3! Really? Come on... ! Furthermore, an dinner entrée that COMES with tortillas should have more than just 3 tortillas!
It's like the proverbial fly in the soup -- everything could be 100% perfect (in my opinion, of course), but it's just that onnnnne little flaw...
In any case, best food ever... we'll keep coming back!
We had the chips with cheesy poblano dip, a beer, and an Arnold Palmer. Server was extremely nice and efficient, fast service, great food here. This place is bustling busy so everything is fresh.
Just flew in from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and boy, does this restaurant put San Juan airport to shame!
Great job TGI's!!!

Alright, alright, alright! We love that our food was absolutely fire. Let's do this again soon!
Come here if you want to see 6 employees stand around and chat 2 feet away from you while NOT saying hello to you or offering you a menu, etc!
Lazy AF. Can't make it up!!!
Great job, SJ airport!
Oh! And for high prices you get crappy plastic forks/knife. Worse the. mcD's.
And take a look at the (reused?) shriveled up disgusting orange slice they put in your food!
What a joke! This location is LITERALLY in a container. The car was very dirty. Their inventory was dwindling fast, and we are just lucky to get the last car for what we paid for. Others did not. We waited for the shuttle at the airport for 40 minutes... NOTHING! -- And then I paid for a taxi. Later on, just for your information, the shuttle DID arrive, but the wait was at least 50 minutes long. I TRIED desperately to call Europcar/Fox (same company here) BUT THE OFFICE HAD THE PHONE OFF THE HOOK -- just a "busy" signal for 40+ minutes. This is literally the WORST rental car experience we have ever had. I will NEVER rent through Fox again (aka Europcar in this location).
