Vajra R.
The simplicity of spices elegantly paired with the modernist approach, and the ambience thusly created to spend meaningful evening with friends and families with good food and drinks, Vajra is such an example of curious amalgam of simple flavors and traditional cuisine. With the tastefully adapted Nepalese and Indian cuisine in the repertoire, VAJRA is nestled in the heart of the six corner of the Wicker Park / Bucktown in the ancient Russian and Turkish Bathhouse that itself is replete with the lores of a hundred year history.

We went there with our expectations as low as possible. I was ready to be disappointed again. The servers were on the hipstery side and that usually doesn't mean good service. But their service was very good.
We ordered the chicken masala, the lamb biryani, and the mutter paneer with some naan. These are dishes that I order everywhere...so Getting them was no adventure and I had a good sense of what to expect with a lot of previous experience to compare with.
I am happy to say that all three dishes were the best I ever had. The biryani was the quintessential biryani with generous pieces of lamb. Not over spiced up and felt even. The lamb wasn't dry or bony. They served it with rota (which they didn't charge us for) and the yogurt was thick and fresh tasting. The chicken masala was excellent too. The chicken meat melted in my mouth...yes..melted. The softest chicken in chicken masala I ever had. The chicken was like a sponge soaked with the masala sauce. It tasted amazing. Then the mutter paneer. They had big chunks of goat cheese...three times the size you would usually get at other places. We at it with bread. It was just perfect.
The bathroom was also very clean...usually an encouraging sign. They were about 20% more expensive than your average Indian restaurant but I think it is well worth it...Happy to pay the extra for the quality of the food. I am gonna be thinking about this place for the months to come and until our next visit, hope they can maintain the same quality we experienced in our last visit.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Doug F.Gilman, IL19Apr 9, 2024
Take out was fantastic. Not too spicy nor salty. The flavors were subtle and complex.

Vajra food is great. Great flavor and complexity to their curry. Docking one star though because they're only carry out. Once would think that if you only did carry out, it would be down to a science...but no. Consistently have to check orders to make sure we have rice (even if we purchase bread the entree is supposed to come with rice). Also, they are often late with orders. Thankfully we live close by and can wait for the text message saying the order is ready and then head out. I've paid a bit extra for curbside delivery too-don't. Their phone never works and when it does, they don't answer it so...no point.
Best Indian though by far so will keep coming with those caveats!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 4, 2024
We were wanting comfort food but something different than we typically order in. Vajra popped up, and there were great reviews, so we decided to give it a try. Pricing was a tad high, but they had a Dinner Date for Two option on UberEats. It seemed worth it, and we liked everything we selected.
The flavors were tasty, a touch of spicy, which we enjoyed. We both liked the Goan Shrimp Curry flavors more than the Chicken Chettinad, but the shrimp was a little overcooked/rubbery, whereas, the chicken was tender and soft. The Chicken Momo looked like soup dumplings but without the soup. The dipping sauce was needed bc they weren't very flavorful. Garlic Naan was soft and chewy, but they didn't reheat as well. The Mango Mousse Cheesecake was too sweet for my preference, but it was good- jelly mango layer, whipped cheesecake mousse, and graham cracker crust.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 16, 2023
We attended a private event and i personally loved the minimalist decor and clean look to the restaurant. The food was delicious... our hosts were vegetarian so we had the best variety veggie food from paneer to dal makhani, Baingan barta, pakoras etc . They had a list of mocktaiks and cocktails... I had the old fashioned which was good but had better. Loved the use of micro greens on all the entrees. Apparently their mock-tails were better. We will certainly revisit,

Our go-to Indian spot for takeout. We've tried the samosa, butter chicken, dal makhani (lentils), bhindi masala (okra), various biriyanis, and Goan fish curry (made with salmon --- and comes with so much delicious sauce we didn't want it to go to waste so added another piece of salmon at home and made it into another meal!). All dishes are fantastic. Since we live close we don't mind that they're still takeout only for right now. Menu is on the pricey side, but it just seems like food cost is up overall and not coming down anytime soon.

I was really disappointed with the food, especially for the price. I tried the butter chicken and garlic naan. The butter chicken was okay, but not the best and not worth ordering again. The butter chicken comes with rice, which granted is just plain basmati rice but it was pretty sad (you could make better steamed rice at home). The naan was the worst I've ever had. It was a very thin naan that tasted like flour. The food was prepared very quickly--I got a text it was ready 6 minutes after I placed the order. It was also pricey for very standard sized portions ($32 with tax).

My family and I cannot get enough of this place. We are an eclectic bunch and it can sometimes be difficult to get us all to agree on what to eat. Vajra is always a unanimous choice. There are two vegetarians among us, myself included, and this has become one of our staples. The food is always delicious, seasoned to absolute perfection. I am a spice queen (if that's a thing) and they really deliver on the heat for me.
Now on to serious business. CAULIFLOWER. Although ubiquitous and often controversial in nature, in this essay I will-- haha no but in all honesty is probably the star of their offerings for me personally. I don't care how many fried versions of it you've had, the bar will be set after you try their Gobhi 65 (if it's not sold out). Just spicy tempura goodness. And if that's not your thing, the Alu Gobhi is cauliflower florets and potatoes sautéed in all kinds of delicious spices and aromatics. Is the agenda working? Anyway, just eat some food here is really what I'm trying to say.
Oh and best vindaloo I've had to date. Oh and double oh, please get the fluffy garlic naan with whatever you decide to try!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - May 13, 2023
I have found it harder and harder to find decent Indian food in the city without having to trek to Devon, and I have loved everything I have ever ordered from Vajra. They don't skimp on the ingredients which is common with a lot of Indian restaurants and I really appreciate that. The quality of the food is great. All of the entrées have been excellent including my go-to chicken tikka masala and butter chicken, basic I know lol but oh so good. I have also tried the appetizers with my favorites being the samosas, onion bhaji and dilliwala aalu tikka. The garlic naan I always have with my entree is good. I am curious to try the Gruyère naan next time. I also have gotten the mango lassi and it tastes fresh and is always delicious.

The best food. We order from here at least once a week. The food is so flavourful, big portions, perfect sauce thickness and heat. Spice wizards!

My husband and I were in the mag mile area with our daughter and puppy and while looking for restaurants to eat, I found Vajra. We ordered saag paneer, garlic naan, dal tadka, rice and gajar ka halwa. The food arrived hot, all dishes tasted great. Dal was on point, so close to homemade - after eating out a couple of days, this felt like home, so satisfying! The gajar ka halwa was so delicious - just the right amount of sweetness, loaded with ghee and nuts. We liked it so much that we saved it for our family to try it the next day.
I have never been to the restaurant and this was only a take out experience but I have already recommended it to a few people I know.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
