Andrew is fantastic. His demeanor is so calming and he gives a great precision haircut.

Guys, if you are looking for SF's best barber & shop...look no further then Andrew Love and the Refinery. Andrew is equally genius with both clippers & and scissors, and consistently delivers the best haircuts of my lifetime.
My hair has gone gray especially on the sides which means I get a cut once every 4 weeks. Guys, you know the usual drill where you get a haircut and the 1st week or so it looks way too short and the last week it looks ways to long? Andrew somehow has broken that cycle by providing the perfect "4 week haircut" that I never thought possible.
Hyper focused on ensuring you walk out feeling great about your hair, and the hot towel (or cold towel on hot days) is the perfect finishing touch!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Derek! Thank you so much for this amazing review! Its a super bummer that it is "not recommended". :( Looking forward to seeing you in the shop again!

Duane gives acceptable haircuts. This review is for their time management.
My appointment got pushed back because the customer before me ran late. They called minutes before the appointment, no apology whatsoever. They simply offered to reschedule the appointment.
It may only be 15 minutes, but it is a matter of principle. The correct way to handle this would be to reschedule the late client. Don't waste everybody else's time just because some moron was late.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Jude C.San Francisco, CA715174Jan 20, 2019
Hostile Customer Service and Poor Time Management really diminished Duane's quality of haircut I was expecting to receive from him.
First, Duane answered back to me with hostility when trying to explain why I cant have my part on my hair a certain way by saying, its like wanting blue eyes when you cant have it and when I asked if he could make my part in the front more noticeable he said it will look ugly and look like you have a landing strip on your face. While I understand everyone has a different way of communicating, in no way did he offer any solutions, compromise, or recommendations but instead blamed it all on the customer's request. A good barber would try to accommodate a customer's request not belittle it.
Second, My appointment was 11:45 and took an uber to get there but I had to wait 20 minutes, punctuality should be better prioritized here or have at least a disclaimer when reserving that you might wait 20-30 mins before you actually get to sit down to get your haircut done.
I am never coming back here and suggest you don't come either.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Matt L.San Francisco, CA247Jul 2, 2019
My first visit here was fantastic. Kendon listened to how bored I was with my hairstyle and freshened it up handsomely.
I've been through 3-4 other shops in the mission this year and the Refinery is the first place where I've felt like they listened to what I wanted and had the knowledge and savvy to deliver on what I wanted!
Go see Kendon!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jon R.San Francisco, CA554732May 7, 2016
Loved it. I've been a DIY hair and beard guy for the 17 years since moving to the Bay Area. I used to go to an old school barber in Manayunk when I lived in Philadelphia and have missed it. So I thought I'd see what the renewed barber shop fuss is all about.
Now my "hairstyle" isn't complicated to say the least. So I'd forgotten and was surprised at just how much I was missing with my weekly self buzz all around. Things like the careful attention to the edges and how good bay rum and good quality talc smells. And getting shampooed by someone other than me and a hot towel facial massage.
If you're looking for a top notch cut and a bit of pampering, check them out.
Ask for Duane! Confident skills and as much or little conversation as you like. Exactly what I'm looking for in a barber.
You'll walk out looking, feeling and smelling great!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rafael M.San Francisco, CA4126Jan 13, 2020
I will not be paying 55-65 dollars for a hair cut. Go down the block and pay 17. I'm not a super model or tech bro... I just need my hair trimmed. Good luck, I'm selling magic beans by the way. 2 for 1 while supplies lasts.

Please, by all means, go down the block and get that $17 haircut. We aren’t for everyone and we aren’t trying to be. Also, I’ll take 3 magic beans.

I've had 7 haircuts at this place, with 3 different barbers. Unfortunately, that's my main complaint. The personnel turnover is high and it's hard to get a consistent cut.
Flower and Doug were great. I had a haircut with Duane last month and it was disappointing on the day of, and got much worse 2 weeks later...Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Gregory Z.Chicago, IL176411Aug 4, 2019
Duane is great. He has real talent cutting hair, and he's always learning and perfecting. I've been going to him for about two years.
The front desk runs the gamut from excellent to indifferent to anti-client. God forbid you have a work delay or parking is harder than usual. There's always the threat of cancelling your appointment if you're 6 minutes late (not 5, not 10, but 6). I've called ahead when running even less than the grace period to let them know and sometimes I get thanked and other times I'm lectured. I will admit they've not cancelled me yet though, but this policy is not friendly at all. Oh, and the few times I'm late, sometimes I have to wait my turn. Interactions at the front desk at the shop are often not warm or helpful. They seem often distracted by other staff, seated clients, or some kind of administrative work (I assume). Know what you want!
Thank goodness for them Duane is amazing.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Elbert M.Daly City, CA92331Jun 19, 2019
Ashlie was amazing! I'm a pretty picky person when it comes to a haircut and she was able to give me exactly what I wanted plus a great conversation.
High 5 Ashlie!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
