I want to disclose that I am not a complainer but I want to warn you of a few things. We stayed overnight on 10/12-10/13. The price was pretty expensive $236 for the night and it really was not worth the price. Don't get me wrong the rooms were pretty and bathrooms all were renovated but the mattress were springy, u can feel the springs and my husband and I actually woke up with pain. There was NO working elevator which was not disclosed when booking.. There is only one ice machine and it's in the basement!
Ps the rooms have no heat, we had a portable heater, thankfully we like the cold so we did not use it, we had the windows opened!!
The offered continental breakfast and it was CRAP!! They offered yogurt they put in mason jars, small containers of blueberries and granola, coffee with cream as the only option and bagels and cold hard boiled eggs and orange juice. The options were definitely less than a normal continental breakfast. We ended up going to a diner for breakfast!!
The one perk was the hot tub. You can reserve to use it so only the only ones there during that time. The sauna is in the same room as the hot tub. I could not use it as it was not functioning or they either turned it in right before we got there and it did not have enough time to warm up.
The bar was GREAT AND deserved 4 stars for service, staff, food and it's presentation.
If your thinking about staying here, go elsewhere the pretty room does not cutting itHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Don W.Biddeford, ME23413341290Sep 27, 2018
I can't share everybody else's excitement about The Daniel. To me, the place simply reeks of a company trying to save a few pennies at every opportunity, and some (but not all) employees who don't seem to know what they're doing.
Not too much works well at the Daniel and I'll start by discussing the elevator. I had read about elevator problems somewhere else and called them to see if the elevator would be working during our stay. They said it was working but was undergoing some cosmetic work. After I made a reservation, I got an email telling em that the elevator wouldn't be working for the entire month. When we got there, the elevator was working but there was a sign on the door saying that it didn't meet safety standards and the sign was nearly a year old. And the inspection certificate expired a year before that. Seriously, I'm writing this in Sept 2018 and the certificate expired in Nov 2016! During our stay, we generally took the stairs.
Another example would be the safes in the rooms. The safe didn't work in our room, so we moved to a different room. In that room, we had trouble with the safe until we understood its quirks.
Lots of things in The Daniel need a coat of paint or a cleaning, and it feels like the problem comes from the top. The hotel is owned by Troca Hotels, which seems to own two hotels and maybe a yacht. I'm not sure about the yacht, their web site links from trocahotels.com to trocayachts.com failed because the web site for the yacht doesn't seem to exist. Attention to detail is apparently not their specialty.
Even checking out was painful. The plan was to have breakfast and leave but there was no coffee and no one working in the area. We went to the front desk to let someone know and the woman behind the desk was talking to a co-worker with a full container of coffee in her hands. We followed her back upstairs where she threw out my cup and then told me to help myself. We had breakfast, went to check out, and there's the same woman at the front desk asking us about our stay. I hesitated and said "I look forward to getting home." She said "No, you can tell me" so I did. At first she had excuses for everything and it went something like this:
Me: That sign on the elevator is pretty scary
Her: Oh, the problems are just cosmetic.
Me: Then why did the safety certificate expire almost two years ago?
Her: Well it's... I don't know... we're still waiting for corporate... I'm sorry.
I told her about the safe not working right, the server at dinner the night before, the lack of cleanliness in the common areas... and then I looked at the bill. The room had been charged to my Visa card, which would be okay except I don't have a Visa card. I told her not to worry about it, whoever owns the Visa will let them know, they have my Amex card, and they should just put the charge on there when they figure it out and to just let me know. They have my email and phone number. Later that day my card was charged, no one called or emailed.
But there were good things too. The property is attractive. The rooms are clean. The beds are noisy but comfortable. The pillows are above average and there was an empty, working refrigerator and a Keurig in the room. A free continental breakfast is included. The cranky wifi system works unless the only browser you have on your laptop is Safari.
And the best thing about The Daniel was Zoe at the front desk. She helped us to get the safe working and to connect to the hotel's wifi. Every hotel should have at least one Zoe. Chris in the bar was good too, and housekeeping didn't miss anything obvious. But the rest of them? It's really sad.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Du Preez S.Halifax, Canada834461263Mar 27, 2016
I stopped by here with family on a drive down from Canada to NY and was looking for something different from the typical cookie cutter look-alike hotels where I usually stay when on the road. The Daniel looked intriguing and when I saw it was a historic property I was curious enough to make a booking.
When we got there, it was obviously very low season (late March) and there weren't many cars in the parking lot. Fine by me, I like quiet..
The place was easy to find and I was impressed with the well decorated old-fashioned-yet-modern lobby. Check in was quick and we were offered a free $5 happy hour appetizer coupon for the next door Coast Pub/Restaurant (will review separately). Just beyond the lobby was a little pantry and a surprisingly modern business center.
We got a room with two double beds.. Not a huge room, but just the right size. It had all the right amenities including a little extra. The TV had a ton of channels you could watch, bath robes in the closet, and comfortable bathroom.
I was highly impressed with the speed and accessibility of the Wi-Fi in this hotel. If you've read my past reviews you'd see that this is something I often complain about hotels not catching up to being in the year 2016.. Funny that it's up to a such an old hotel to provide the most modern Internet access. Another thing that makes me very happy is when hotels provide bedside plug-in and USB charging ports.. This really shows that they are thinking about the needs of their customers in today's digital age.
The gym was well equipped with modern machines as well as weights. Sauna and steam room were available to book as well.
We had a great nights sleep and headed down to the free included continental breakfast. It was pretty sparse, but nicely laid out and there was a friendly attendant on hand at all times to ensure we had everything we needed.
All in all I would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again if I had the chance.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Vicky H.Boston, MA3665051614Jan 31, 2017
Went Ice Fishing with a few friends. I didn't plan on staying overnight but a friend did make a reservation and already paid for the place. So I came here after fishing, took a hot shower and had some breakfast and laid down for an hour before leaving. 2 fulll size beds in the room. stuff seemed to be a bit old except for the newer bathroom and was well lit.
Complementary breakfast was cool. they offered hard boiled eggs, yogurt and fruits. also a variety of cereal to choose from, bagels, sliced bread and muffins to choose from as well. coffee and tea were offered. however, by the time i got here, not much left to choose from and there weren't any staff around to ask.
Overall, it was pleasant. when you did see staff they were smiling and greeting guests. had to ask for extra shampoo since there were a couple of us and the housekeeper happily obliged.
will definitely come back if in the area and need a place to stay. very clean.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Anita D.San Francisco, CA031Jan 23, 2020
I received a voicemail today that my 3 night reservation day after tomorrow that I made weeks ago has been cancelled. No real reason given other than the front desk person sheepishly saying that "owner said it just doesn't make sense this time of year." ....the implication being that occupancy was a little too low over the time period that I booked so they were cancelling all the reservations?!!!
To add insult to injury, I asked "Well, what do you recommend since you all are closing with short notice?" I was apprised that the second best hotel was unfortunately now booked with all the relocated Daniel guests that were scrambling for accommodation.
F-
Avoid. Owners and staff clearly don't care about customer service. Hotel should have honored all the bookings and should NEVER have cancelled on guests 48 hours before arrival with absolutely no clear explanation.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - John W.Needham, MA08Nov 26, 2019
When recently traveling up to Bowdoin parents weekend to stay at The Daniel, I received a call in my car from the desk clerk informing me that due to a heating problem, I likely would not have a room.
What!!??? I booked this 11 months ago and they tell me this when I'm about to check in? They made no reservation elsewhere, offered no compensation for the trouble and had to chase the manager down...which took two weeks.
I will never stay here again and advise you do the same.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jonathan G.Montclair, NJ254589114Dec 6, 2011
I hate hotels. I usually find a place on VRBO just so it can feel a little more like home and a little less like a room you need to cover in plastic bags just to feel clean.* However, I was making a one day trip to Brunswick and needed a place to stay that was, at least by e-ppearances, not disgusting. Enter my new friend, Captain Daniel Stone. I don't know who he is or why he is a Captain, but he makes a pretty nice hotel.
This is a true inn and feels more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. The rooms are spacious and very clean and the staff is helpful and friendly. There is free WiFi and I never once felt the need to disinfect anything inside the room.** There is plenty of parking around back and the small inn has a very nice gym that looks like it hasn't been used, ever. The bed was comfortable and the top comforter did not need to be immediately laid on the ground.***
Captain Daniel Stone Inn has a restaurant and bar inside, but is also an extremely easy walk to the town. If you are planning a trip to Bowdoin or just to Brunswick, the accommodations with my boy, Capt'n DS, are well worth the price. Did I mention it is also very clean?

* Alright, maybe this is my issue, but remote controls in hotels are really dirty.

We are locals meeting family for lunch on a Sunday. We were pleased with the presentation of kale and goat cheese on flatbread, which turned out not to be flat but a breads pizza dough. Nevertheless, very tasty, and the bloody mary was very good. Out for $20 a head incl grat, it is well worth returning. A quiet ambience near an open grate fire provided an excellent atmosphere to talk without a lot of typical restaurant noise and hubbub. Our server Chris has a booming voice which I find when I wear my hearing aids which cause people to speak loud. However, he is very professional and looked after all our needs with timely attention.
We didn't see many locals out for Sunday lunch, which surprised us. It's a nice place to gather. Management ought to do a bit of marketing to tell the story locally.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nick M.Newton, MA352163Oct 18, 2013
This place is so underrated. I've never seen a hotel or inn with a nicer layout. They have a jacuzzi tub which you can reserve, not a lot of people seem to realize that. It also has a gym which is nicer than almost every other gym I've seen in hotels in my lifetime.
It's a cute little place and their restaurant is actually really nice as well. It's a quicker drive from Boston than you'd expect and well worth it too.
It's my go to place for a little winter getaway in Maine.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 8, 2014
Convenient walking distance to Maine street was our main reason for staying here. Room on river side was quiet and had some updates. Very nice linens and towels but bed and floors were creaky. After all, it is historic. Ice machine is on ground floor near very nice gym that was never in use.
