Authentic Taiwanese food. Bento boxes. Taiwanese fried popcorn chicken.
Theres no dine in available - takeout only. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. There's usually a lineup but it moves very quickly as the staff are really efficient.
Consistent quality every time. Highly recommended.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 75125459Apr 26, 2023
It's a very authentic Taiwanese bento(lunchbox) restaurant. I think I'm qualified to say that because I'm from Taiwan. It basically clones the entire bento experience from Taiwan and makes the same here. The choices of the main dish and the sides are various. They're not only tasty but also tasted identical to what we have in Taiwan. It arise our nostalgia for home. I really recommend this place if you wanna try Taiwanese bento!

Super busy Taiwanese take out place with decent portions! $10.35 each for the minced pork and popcorn chicken bento. It came with steamed rice and 3 side dishes of your choice. Lots of sides to choose from!
Just gotta be a bit patience with the line up because the store is small but the ladies working there are trying to serve everyone. I'd say about 2 mins per customer.
Cash only.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 3, 2021
When I think of taiwanese popcorn chicken, this is my go to place! This is a grab and go take out place and food is always fresh! You get a choice of protein and get to pick three sides from a large selection of sides per bento box. No matter which area I live in, I always come back to this place for popcorn chicken, other places just don't make the cut. It's either cold, too greasy, too much batter, or gets soggy and nasty at other places.
If you want to satisfy your popcorn chicken cravings, you must check this place out! They also serve other food, but popcorn chicken is always my go to!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Joanne C.Ajax, Canada0512Oct 21, 2022Updated review
Best Taiwanese bento! We drive here from Ajax because they are THAT GOOD!!!
Please note the updated menu pic. Great portions and always more than 6 sides to choose from. Watch out for long lines during lunchtime & allow extra time for anything fried : they cook by order so it's always fresh & hot. They are closed on Sunday & holidays. Family run - fast & friendly staff.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jun 30, 2021Previous reviewHad to do the drive again because they are the best!! Today I got to try the summer special Cold Noodles. omg so GOOD! I added a side of fish cakes.
Jun 8, 2021Previous reviewI drive to this restaurant almost once a week from Ajax!!! We love the food here. Huge portions & never disappoints. Please note the menu has been updated. But we always enjoy all the different bento boxes with a side order "twins" popcorn chicken and fish cakes "tin-bou-lot". Everyone is friendly- very fast and efficient service. This is a windowed hot table so everyday the side vegetable options may vary. Our goto is popcorn chicken (one regular & one spicy ) braised pork belly + braised fish. If you can handle a little bit of spice ask for the minced black bean side (its free) they put it on the rice under your protein option. For the adventurous- try the traditional snacks.

Just an update:
Came by during the pandemic time. The line-ups were long, but everyone was orderly. We decided to grab some lunch as we didn't want to cook.
We ordered a Taiwanese sausage bento and a popcorn chicken bento with all the fixings. Their food reminded us of all the years of coming by here to grab their food. The food still tastes great. To me, the best part is the side dishes. Those are absolutely awesome! We found out we can order ahead. So we will do that going forward.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0Feb 10, 2018Previous reviewOne of the few Taiwanese places that serves yummy Taiwanese bento box. They used to have a few tables that allows for a quick sit down meal. Now, they are only for take out. And honestly, I find this is the better method.
When I walked in, I realized they have renovated a little. That looks better IMO. So I ordered the popcorn chicken with my assortment of side dishes. This was still how I remembered this place's offering. I need to purposely pay for extra side dishes, cause these are amazing! Will I come back? Came and ordered for a company lunch, everyone enjoyed all the different varieties of combinations that tai Ping Hsiang offers. The service is as great as always. It's a order and go type of place. Small, efficient, friendly and tasty

With COVID restrictions in place, there are only limited amount of customers allowed inside the store. Throughout the day, there's a line outside the store for people to go line and get takeouts. The line moves pretty fast so it's not too bad of a wait. Make sure you bundle up on cold winter days though!
Lots of selections on food - Hank K.Toronto, Canada153102305Jan 11, 2021
Ah, Taiwan, where I was born and raised. Because of the nature of unrealistic working ethics and hypercapitalism, nuclear families with stayed home moms are actually not as prevalent as many have thought for most of the middle-working class families. This includes my own childhood.
My parents were both extremely busy at their full time jobs when I was a kid, so I didn't have many chances of tasting my mom's cooking, besides some weekends. Our regular meals consisted of 自助式便當 (mix and match beto boxes) since it saves time, while also provides healthy, balanced meals in general.
Hualien Tai Ping Hsiang is probably one of the most authentic Taiwanese bento restaurants I have ever had in Canada, in the good-old mix-and-match style above.
Their side dishes are incredibly delicious if you got them fresh; they also have other authentic food such as Taiwanese style sesame cold noodle (涼麵)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 23, 2019
This place would have been a solid 3.5, however, I am forced to give it a 1 due to food safety concerns.
Major concern is the popcorn chicken was not fully cooked - had a deep pink - red colour. Generally, I'm not squeamish about some pink in my chicken, I'll shrug it off and keep eating. In this case, when I got 2/3 of the way done my meal, I noticed this one piece tasted not quite done and, unfortunately, when I looked, it indeed had a nice deep pink - red colour. I was quite sad since everything up to that made this great.
The service is fairly quick and to the point. The ladies speak English, Cantonese and mandarin. The bento box is pick 1 meat then cafeteria style pick 3 veges. If you don't know what things are, point and ask.
Comes with a massive amount of rice, generous amount of meat and then three rectangles of vege side dishes of your choosing. All 3 vege dishes were quite good albeit a little on the oily side. We got two different fried tofus and one eggplant sides.
The popcorn chicken (right before the raw piece) was actually quite good, not served super hot but had a nice thin batter, crispy and meaty.
Price is very affordable as it's only 9$ for the whole thing which is rare in GTA for a meal.
Alas, it was not to end so well as mid-way through the meal, there was an undone piece of popcorn chicken and the meal ended briefly after. I wish I could give it a better rating but there are only a few things that make me give a place a 1 Star and food safety is one of those things.
I'd recommend getting meats that are braised. If you do get the popcorn chicken, be wary of the larger pieces as they may not be cooked through!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 7, 2019
Many choices of bento. Just like what I had in Taiwan.
You pick a meat dish and other three veggi dish.
I chose the fried chicken. My friend had a popcorn chicken. The chicken was well marinated. I forgot to take photos before I devoured.
They were lovely. The price was good. I would like to come back and try all other dishes.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
