Our team from work has been dining here for lunch for years and we all have our favorites! This is a local, family owned business, so they don't have the luxury of a large staff, so we arrive early (11:30) when they open and before the lunch crowd. There are a lot of bad reviews about the wait and food, but also some decent ones, which never deter me or my team of foodies/millennials :) from returning. That's a good enough gauge for me. We also compare the dishes we love here with other thai restaurants and either can't find the items elsewhere or the dishes don't taste as good as here.
*Tip: If you are in a rush, this may not be the place for you to go.
*Tip: We always know what we want or at least have narrowed it down between 2 dishes. (I know this isn't realistic, but for our big party, it's a must if you're here for a work lunch)
Judy and her husband (Zen) know our orders as soon as we sit down and she can guess in our party of 5-6 our alternate choices, too.
My personal favorites (and some of the team's) are:
- Pineapple prawns & scallops w/red coconut curry over rice. Spicy, sweet and consistent every time we order.
- Klew Soi: Northern noodle (egg noodles) curry with chicken or tofu served with toppings - bean sprouts, crispy noodles, chili, pickled greens with a delectable spicy broth. There are days when we call our klew soi ahead because we want 6 of them and it takes time to prepare. Their curry and (chili) spices are also home made, so you can taste the difference.
- Pad See Ew: You can order shrimp, tofu, chicken or beef and I typically get with beef.
- Basil fried rice (I add beef to it, so it is definitely a big meal). If you get it to go, the container is heavy!
- Crispy chicken: Deep fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce. The chicken is flavorful and has the batter has a hint of sweet (but not overpowering) flavor.
Don't let the bad reviews deter you from trying this restaurant. Yes, the wait can be long, so plan accordingly or pull the menu online before you go so you can narrow down your choices.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Oct 17, 2022
Just found out this restaurant is closing, and I'm absolutely devastated. An amazing mom and pop restaurant, it was my favorite and most frequented in Palo Alto when I was a student in the area.
Their pad see ew, extra spicy was and still is my favorite pad see ew. Service was always friendly, sometimes a little slow since it was just the two of them but always worth it for the food -- tasty, comforting, and will be sorely missed.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Paul C.Menlo Park, CA1009630Feb 15, 2024Updated review
Called it. As you can see this place is no longer in business. My last review was just how bad their service and food has become.

Siam Royal is a perennial, classic Thai restaurant in Downtown Palo Alto. The food is traditional and tasty. Don't expect it to be a glamorous place to eat. I wouldn't recommend taking a date or someone to impress as the inside is a bit dated. Although the food is good and fresh. Perhaps a great takeout place or for a casual meeting.
I had the Mango Chicken lunch special. The mango pieces were really sweet. The portion was adequate. I must have been really hungry because I ate my entire meal. Good pieces of vegetables as well with a mix of chicken. The flavors were good.
The pricing is a bit more expensive than usual, perhaps due to COVID. I guess for these prices, I might expect a bit more decor and ambiance inside. Overall, a solid selection in Downtown Palo Alto,Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 1084791448Sep 28, 2021
This is the perfect place for a late dinner, right in the heart of Downtown Palo Alto! I had dinner here around 7:30 and was seated right away. There are plenty of outside seating. We were starving so we also ordered right away.
The food here is solid. Good Thai food in the mid price range. Serving size is also decent, it would make you full but it would be hard to share. What I ordered:
-Pad Kee Mao with Beef: This is so good! The noodles were soft and not too soggy. Flavor is good with a little spice. Comes with broccoli, which cuts the fat.
-Pineapple Fried Rice: This was my favorite dish. The rice was decadent and full of flavors thanks to the onion and pineapple.
Overall a good place to eat! Service is adequate, not too quick but also not too slow. There was only one person who was serving so I understand if they might be understaffed.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mystery M.Fremont, CA36678271126Mar 8, 2022
I can see why the overall rating for this place is a 3. I'm also giving them the same.
I thought the calamari appetizer was really mediocre at best and it was a pretty small portion. It also wasn't as tender as you would think it should have been. However, I did enjoy the sauce it came with.
The Kao Soi was pretty good though, you can't go wrong with a curry noodle soup. I didn't like the type of noodle it came with, usually it comes with a different kind of noodle at other places. It was also spicy, which I don't recall the menu saying that it was supposed to be spicy.
The customer service was okay, it seems like maybe a husband and wife operation? The lady was very nice and had a smile, but the gentleman not so much.
Overall, I don't think I would return. There are much better places around to dine. You can skip this one.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Angelina C.Manteca, CA125Jul 2, 2022
I wouldn't eat here if it was the only place open for food in CA !
Racist! They wouldn't allow my family to even use the restroom ! Everyone that worked here made us feel as uncomfortable as possible!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 12591438Mar 23, 2022
I have been here couple of times and I definitely think it's a decent spot. I had the Pad See ew with beef and Thai iced tea. Both were good. I don't have much expertise in Thai food but I liked the noodles and the beef. We went during lunch hours on a week day and didn't seem too busy. We were seated, ordered and received our order pretty quickly.

Before shelter in place we used to come in here on a monthly basis as a large group and get dinner together. It was always so nice because we could be seated together and get our orders and pay separately. The food is delicious and there are a ton of options so that everyone can get something to fill their belly. The curry is great. The pad Thai is excellent. Their green beans and beef is super good.
They will also make dishes spicy based on what you can handle.
So yummy and cannot wait until we can go back as a large group to dine together again!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 63833851315Dec 27, 2019
This place has rather decent food but dinner service was so slow we ate a bit hesitant to come back anytime soon. The place was not even that busy so we were confused on why it was so slow.
We had ordered 5 dishes and were waiting about 20 minutes before the appetizer of fried calamari came out. 20 more minutes elapsed and still no main dishes... It was a bit irritating, especially since the restaurant was not full! All in all the whole experience took like 1.5 hours from start to finish.
The food finally came out and I did think the food was decent. Pad Thai was flavorful and not bad (I don't usually eat this), although oddly they did have chicken AND tofu in it.
We also got this chicken and vegetable dish. Flavors were good, as it was a bit saucy. I liked the baby corn.
We also got kao soy and I thought that was quite nice. The soup is a bit spicy but it was very rich and creamy. I liked the thin wavy noodles in the soup.
Portion sizes for each dish did seem a little on the smaller side. I could have easily finished one entree dish myself which is unusual.
Lighting was also a bit funky and quite dim. I had a hard time staying awake.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Aug 3, 2019
Came here with a friend on Saturday afternoon. Not too busy, and we were seated quickly. Pretty quiet/casual noise level. The waitress was really nice.
Note that lunch menus are not available on the weekends, just dinner menus. We decided to share the chicken Pad See Ew and Beef Salad. Both were delicious and flavorful.
Overall great, will be back!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
