Rudy's has excellent smoked meats. They have brisket, lean brisket, pulled pork, turkey or chicken or even sausage.
I'm not as fond of their barbecue sauce because it's heavy on black pepper. So I ordered the stuffed baked potato topped with chopped brisket. I also ordered a small portion of the green chile stew. The green chile stew is quite spicy. You can use it as a chunky salsa or as a side dish.
I enjoyed my meal which was huge. I could not quite finish it all. As an iced tea love her I was pleased that they have fresh brewed iced tea, both sweet or unsweet.
The ambience is rather like a ranchhouse and very casual. You go up an order at the counter, pay for your meal which you then take to the table. There is a place for you to pick up plastic utensils, pickles, onions, jalapeños, and such like. For napkins they use paper towels.
The person that waited on us was not particularly engaging, or fast, but he did manage to get our order right.
In the past I have ordered several of their sides. Their potato salad is pretty good as it is their three bean salad. When I ordered their banana pudding I was disappointed so I did not get any this time. It looked better than it was. Of course, I have my own recipe for banana pudding which is better than any you find and restaurants. But beyond that I don't like soggy cookies in my banana pudding.
Rudy's is located behind the Walmart and catty corner from the Hampton Inn.
I enjoy smoked meats, but usually only get any if I'm traveling without my family. One member of my family is a vegetarian, and I noticed that there really wasn't much for vegetarians to eat at Rudy's besides the salads and corn on the cob. No significant vegetable protein options.
Overall I enjoyed my meal at Rudy's, but wish I liked their BBQ sauce more.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 5308994118Aug 24, 2023
This is not a gas station with a barbecue restaurant this is a barbecue restaurant with a gas station. I filled up my tank for the next day to go back to SAT to catch my flight, and decided to come back for dinner to try it out.
This place is huge and the people are friendly and helpful. The food is great, and a lot, A LOT! My jumbo baked potato loaded with butter, sour cream, cheese and 'sprinkled' with sausage is a whole meal by itself. I added baby back ribs too, with a coleslaw. Loved it! I had enough self control to walk away before I got the banana pudding. Next time. Good thing, or bad thing that Rudy's is just across the street is my hotel.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 29, 2022
Let me start by saying WOW! Super friendly staff that genuinely greet you as you walk in and out.
My first time here and I asked the young man at the counter yet for help. He gladly went through the options and what I might be interested in based on what kinds of meats I liked.
I settled on the 1/2 pound of hot sausage, 1/2 of of baby back ribs, and a small tub of potato salad. Everything had great taste, full of flavor. The hot sausage was not super hot.
Definitely earned my five stars and my hearty recommendation.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 25, 2023
A long road trip and a bit of familiarity let us to our latest. Rudy's stop near the border, as is almost always the case of Rudy's. The service was fast and polite; the food was fast and it consistently, good, and
The price is reasonable for a good amount of meat. If you have never been to a Rudy's and you need to know for the meats, you mainly order by the half pound for brisket they have a lean and Weiss option, I recommend the moist option, but my wife will tell you to get the lien option . I know it's one of those personal preferences on how you like your cuts of meat, with a little more fat on it, and a little juicier, or a little more dry. If they have it I will always have the green chili stew. Their turkey is very good although it is just white meat if you're only a dark meat, kind of person you might not like it. Their jalapeño sausage is really not spicy at all but it has a good flavor. You can get pork ribs, or baby back ribs; we got some of both. They do have some premade items like coleslaw and potato salad and even some desserts and I want to say it's either banana pudding or Oreo pudding. Before you get to the register to order there are coolers filled with different bottles of beverages, mainly of the alcohol variety (beer). The seating is one of two ways. There's long tables with the metal fold up chairs, or there are picnic tables that you can sit at. Also at the table are sauces and salt and pepper, and even toothpicks for that pesky meat that gets stuck in your teeth. In between the tables and your drink stations are a few items like pickles, and jalapeños and onions; they have boats that you can put them in, and some plastic forks and spoons and knives. They have bags to go and butcher paper to wrap up your meat. If you can't eat it all, which I would suggest doing if you're not traveling for another six hours like we were. If we're home and eat at Rudy's we always order more on purpose so that we can take some home with us, I will always recommend Rudy's as a good, fast, barbecue option.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Blanche S.Santa Cruz, CA7115256Aug 27, 2023
Ambiance is fine, a little loud as not any noise. The prime rib at $28+ per lb was tough & chewy. It probably needed a bit longer low & slow. "Moist Brisket" was dry. Smoked Turkey was fine.
Probably will not go back as $127 ended up being not well spent.
Nice gentleman cleaning up was so helpful at condiments counter.

Friendly!
Im staying right across the way... so of course I've eaten here. I never really ordered from here on my own, so the gentleman at the cash register informed me that everything was ala cart.
I ordered half a chicken and two baby back ribs...with a side of cole slaw. All of that came out to a total of 20$
A bit pricey. Food was good, not amazing. No max and cheese or mashed potatoes!?!! I need that with BBQ.
Maybe, maybe not that I'd go back. Even though it's right across the way.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Oct 3, 2021
Mmmmm. When I think of Texas Bar-B-Q, I think of Rudy's. And the joint in Del Rio is worth it. I took a friend and we ordered 1/2 pound of wet brisket each (wet vs. dry is like NY vs. Chicago pizza - I'm a wet kinda guy) and a whole sausage split in two. We didn't want to waste our time (and stomach space) with bread or sides! The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the sausage had a nice snap with every bite. My buddy never had Texas Bar-B-Que (he's from California, don't judge) and he gave it a thumbs up 'cos his mouth was too full to speak! If you're in Del Rio and you have a hankerin' for Texas Bar-B-Q, stop by Rudy's and fill up on good food (and gas for your car). You won't regret it.

Food is great. Atmosphere is great. Just what you would expect from a Rudy's. Customer service is certainly lacking.
