Absolutely amazing.
As some of the other folks said, this place is like eating in someone's home, not a restaurant.
You enter directly into the kitchen/common area, and it can be disconcerting. Unlike any other restaurant I've ever been. The hostess/waitress/cook/busser/owner greets you with assurance to come on in.
The place is fairly small, but with a beautiful mural on one wall, and windows on the other, where you can watch Mary's dogs and chickens play in the backyard.
The food is the reason for five stars. Everything is made to order, and she is known to whip up off-menu favorites. The meatballs are honestly the best I have had. Not dense, but yet somehow sausage - y and delicious. The marinara is awesome. No runny sauce here. It is deliciously mild and rich with tomato flavor without being greasy. It actually sticks to the pasta instead of draining to the bottom of the plate.
The father uses HIS father's recipe to make the proccuito, which is aged two years in house. You will likely meet him, as he will occasionally wander into the dining room to talk food, sports, or Italy.
No other place like it on earth.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Rachel M.Pittsburgh, PA31619May 5, 2018Updated reviewPurchased a Yelp Deal
I wasn't entirely comfortable leaving that low rating before, and I'm happy to report that the business owner (or manager) reached out to me, to explain the miscommunication.
Technology, yay?
I was also happy to hear that the restaurant is still feeding area Yinzers -- and others, like me. I'd been told of the lovely eats to come out of this kitchen.
So, do come ... just give a call, just in case. 'Cause life can be chaotic.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 30, 2018Previous reviewOk, look. This review is subject to my own review, depending on what happens next. But so far ... I'm not impressed, to put it mildly and broadly.
But I naively trusted Yelp and Google, and I assumed the place was open, because they seemed confident it was. (I did try to call ahead, to order for pickup, but no one answered: I managed to interpret this as, hey, they're busy tonight; cool. Yeah ... I'm a dork.)
AND I'd gone ahead and bought the voucher "deal" the restaurant had offer, on Yelp.
So I was a bit cranky when I arrived in (what I've since learned is) West Alliquippa -- an odd ghost-town-feeling, mostly-post-industrial place -- and found Rossi's shut up tight. I was also _starving_, even before I got there, so "little things" seemed magnified.
I was fortunate to find a lovely old-school bar and restaurant not far down the road.
But I'm still going to need this resolved. I've thrown money into what seems like the abyss, and I would like it back, if I can't get the lovely pasta the internet described, after all.
(Heck, I don't even know if Rossi's is still a going concern. The folks at the l'il bar down the road weren't at all sure. It's apparently been bit of a transition, from the old management -- to keep it politely vague.)
I'll let y'all know how it goes. - Jay P.Coraopolis, PA04May 19, 2017
Found this place on yelp and was surprised i had never been there considering the high reviews. I called Mary and made a reservation. She was very accommodating.
My first impression was uncertainty since the door does open into the kitchen, but Mary greeted us quickly and led us back to the diningroom. She is a one man operation and completely took care of my party with no problem.
We started our feast with prosciutto and cheese which is house made. It was excellent. We also ordered stuffed peppers, sausage and pepper pasta, and veal romano. I really enjoyed all the food. Its true classic Italian.
Somehow i made room for dessert and tried the lemon pitzel cake. It was an extremely impressive dessert. I highly recommended it.
One of the things that made this restaurant special is the homey atmosphere. We had my 18 month old with us and she was free to walk around and play. This was totally different from any dining experience ive had before. It is a very kid friendly.
Overall this place is very unique. It is really like being at Mary's house for dinner. If your looking for a relaxing home cooked italian meal this is your spot. I know ill be back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Alyssa B.Aliquippa, PA0181May 14, 2016
We had an awesome time here! We were all alone until half way through our meal then another couple came in. I wish they had more business...this place should be booming. Chicken marsala was huge and so delish! Meatball casserole was just like grandma used to make. And the limoncello pizzelle cake....let me just say we were licking the plate. This is definitely a hidden and gem and more people need to support this place. As we were leaving Mary was hand mixing and rolling gnocchi for the next order! Can't wait to go back! Oh how could I forget we had the prosciutto plate and my other half ate the whole thing! Also we wanted to try the pasta fagioli so mary made some specially for us....excellent service and excellent time!

Hidden Gem! So relaxed - so family I felt like I was at home. The food is actually homemade and exactly as it should be. The ladies who work there are lovely! They make the food and serve it themselves ! Call ahead and come hungry. It's not like going out to eat it's like going home!

We're always looking for something new to try, and being from Hopewell I don't know how I've never heard of this place.
But after seeing some reviews online, we had to try it out.
When we arrived we went to the front door which opens into the kitchen, side dining room area. The place was empty, and we weren't sure if they were open.
We started to leave when I heard, over here come on in.
We met Mary who showed us around and made us feel at home.
I guess they don't get a lot of business because of the location, but don't let that stop you from trying it. If you're going with a large group, give Mary a call first for a heads up. This really is just a two person operation!
Everything we ate was delicious. We started off with the prosciutto and cheese plate and for dinner I had the Chicken Romano and my other half had the Zucchini parm with home made gnocchi.
Even the bread and wine is homemade, in house!
One other review I read hits the nail on the head, it feels more like you were invited over to a friends house for dinner rather than going to a restaurant.
I can't say enough good things. We will certainly be back!Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Tom K.Denver, CO5161Aug 21, 2015
Great Italian food with homestyle cooking in West Aliquippa. It is a pop & daughter shop with interesting dialog from colorful characters. You feel as if you are eating with family. The veal parmesan, pasta fagoli and home made spaghetti noodles were all winners. This restaurant is open by reservation only. You must call Mary and leave a message with the time you wish to reserve. The owners live in the 2nd floor of the house above the restaurant. Prices are reasonable in the $10 - $15 range. Be sure to get directions.

I couldn't believe this place was open, given its location and faded sign. After eating there, I can't believe my group was the only one there!
Try the sausage, the meatballs, the stuffed peppers, the chicken parm...Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kevin W.Sewell, NJ771Mar 28, 2012First to Review
Great basic Italian food. Recommend the Chicken Romano, linguine with clam sauce, prosciutto and cheese platter, fried zucchini. Gnocchi are very nice as well... not too heavy. Good homemade wine as well. Call ahead... it is a true mom and pop operation. Very friendly and relaxed... Great place to go for catching up with old friends. Highly recommend.

Unbelievably good. By far, the best Italian food I've ever had. There was a group of 7 of us on a Friday night (we made reservations earlier in the day). Mary was working by herself but she did awesome. Everything came out hot and delicious. Amazing prosciutto, the stuffed hot banana peppers were great as well. For dinner, i had the chicken parm. It was on point! Chicken was seasoned awesome and the pasta was cooked perfect. The whole group was more than happy with their dinners. My friend said the chicken marsala was the best he's had. Go check this place out, you will not be disappointed! Don't forget to call ahead first though.
