Returning client here after years of trying other barbers and stylists for my super short to pixie haircut needs.
It's refreshing to see that many of the stylists here who I remember from 10 years ago or more are still with Public Barber. My memory of this place is that whoever I made an appointment with, I always left with a great cut.
Although prices have increased, they're still very reasonable for SF as well as the quality of the service you get. The vibe is also very chill and welcoming. My most favorite thing is being able to schedule an appointment easily through their app for either this location or the one in North Beach.
For my return visit I was craving a super short buzz cut. I hesitate with buzz cuts because my hair texture is kind of coarse and spiky and I can easily look like a hedgehog if I don't get a skilled barber. Alicia B. gave me one of the best buzz cuts I have had - nice and tight on the sides and back, and leaving enough length up top while shaping and fading all the lines perfectly. I felt ultra feminine despite having a severe style. I'm totally ready for summer - thank you Alicia and Public Barber on Geary!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Nov 29, 2011Previous reviewMy 2nd time is even better than the first. Came back for a trim and chose an early time slot on a Tuesday morning, and got Gary as my stylist. Quick interview on how I'd like my hair cut, and he set to work - no shampoo this time - wetting my hair down with Bumble and Bumble tonic, and he didn't do razor cutting...just shears, and a little bit of the clipper around my nape/hairline. I really loved his technique. I felt comfortable throughout and he was really tidy too -- brushed off any stray hairs around my face and neck, and gave me a finished style at the end using B&B surf spray and sumo tech wax for volume and texture. One of the few times that I've left a salon feeling completely happy with my look. Usually I'd have to go home, shower, and restyle my hair. Next time I make an appointment I'll request Gary!
Oct 17, 2011Previous reviewDue to my lower budget and several recommendations from coworkers who also get their hair cuts here, I made the choice to try out Public Barber. I'm impressed with their business hours - open 7 days a week and up to 9pm on some nights...I like the convenience of being able to go after work if need be. They schedule appointments either on the same day or 24 hrs in advance, so it may not be easy to get the same stylist every time.
I snagged a 4pm appointment on a Sunday and was taken in immediately by Masha. I opted for the $5 extra shampoo - I always love the scalp massages! - I may do without it the next time because I got pretty drenched...water down my neck and trickling down my face throughout most of the cut (thank goodness I wasn't wearing makeup!). I appreciated Masha asking me beforehand how I wanted my hair trimmed, and she followed my request exactly. Normally I don't like razor cuts on my hair type - because it makes my hair too spiky and frizzy, but somehow Masha did the razoring without that happening. I'm amazed at the speed she cut my hair and the end result was comparable to cuts I've gotten at higher end salons for almost triple the price and time I've spent in the chair. My total tab including shampoo was $34.
Overall, an impressive first visit and I love that they carry Bumble and Bumble products. I'll definitely be back for my monthly trims. - Jason F.Knoxville, TN22122Sep 7, 2021
What a badass visit I had. Daniel was my stylist. He was warm, welcoming, and felt like a longtime friend. He was invested in fun conversation while he hacked away at my long-overgrown undercut into a flawless, easy-to-manage fauxhawk. Then, he took me back to the wash area for a deep-conditioning service, and that was equally relaxing.
Well worth the time and money. Daniel's the one to request for sure!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mini K.San Francisco, CA154178Jul 17, 2021
I've been going to Sage for years, she always does an amazing job and my post-Covid haircut looks amazing! I was so excited I asked her to take pics so I could post a review.
I have fine hair (but thick, lots of it), and a cowlick on my bangs, and always go for a medium-long 1960's shag inspired layered look with slightly curved bangs and feathered pieces to frame my face. She's great at putting the layers in the right spot to help the hair lift, creating a shape that follows the curve of my face vs. being bottom-heavy and triangle-shaped which is what my hair does by default. She does a great job styling it with only a round brush and flat iron (which is great because it's something I am able to emulate myself at home).Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Anna S.San Francisco, CA85321Sep 23, 2022Updated review
I have never, ever had a bad experience here. I came in all wishy washy about what I wanted from my really long and super thick hair. Danielle figured everything out and gave me the shag haircut of my dreams, dealing with my cowlick and all. I lived in NYC and LA and haircuts like these cost 3X what you pay here. There's no pretension; no BS. Just a solid place with great stylists and amazing service. It was really a dream and I plan to come back regularly.

Oct 4, 2016Previous reviewNo, but seriously! This place is not just good for an affordable cut but absolutely fantastic for any price range. Sage took my hair to rehab and cut maybe 3 feet off into the most stylish, easy-to-maintain short cut. Everyone to my left and right looked awesome too! And the space is artsy and welcoming with zero pretense. Felt like a dirty a-hole walking in and a rockstar walking out. Truly a wonderful experience.

I have been a Public Barber client since 2014, and have been lucky enough to land with Sage Schofield as my primary stylist.
Although the price point initially brought me in the door, the service, amazing quality cuts and color, and my relationship with Sage have kept me coming back ever since. I've enthusiastically referred many friends and family members to her.
Sage is a curly hair master, and a gifted colorist. She always makes me feel pampered and well taken care of during my visits, and she is patient, attentive, and responsive. She helped me approach how to grow out and do just a touch of color for my wedding updo, but is also equally enthusiastic about a standard cleanup cut.
She and the Public team have handled the COVID restrictions with so much poise, care and professionalism. I give them lots of kudos for how safe and supportive they've been, opening up slowly and with client and stylist precautions in place. I hope many others find Sage and her team!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - David A.Chico, CA03Jul 8, 2022
Horrible experience at this barbershop and will not be returning.
I spent 40 minutes on a bus and MUNI to my appointment just for them to tell me there was not enough time for my haircut and they would have to reschedule my haircut. I showed up 15 minutes early, but apparently they didn't have time for the appointment.
I should have just cancelled the haircut. I was unable to make it to my second appointment and had to cancel my second appointment. Apparently I didn't cancel soon enough and was charged a cancellation fee equal to the cost of the haircut ($55 in my case) Seems like a pretty ridiculous cancellation fee.
Oh and top it off they don't even serve beer anymore apparently which is half the reason i showed up in the first place.
I wouldn't recommend this barbershop to anybody.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ron R.Washington D.C., DC36406Jul 13, 2021Updated review
Can't go wrong here. Great experience. Convenient online booking so you know exactly when you can get in and out. Excellent skilled crew (bonus when the owner of the shop has you in his chair). Prices very competitive with anywhere else in the city.

I woke up feeling edgy and remembered one of my girl friends had gotten an EDGY cut there I decided to give them a call. Luckily they had time for me and I came in for my transformation.
Lexi was my stylist and ultimately transformed me. I love everything about my new style and will be coming here more often.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Shaina B.San Francisco, CA073Jun 15, 2019Updated review
Immediately after I posted my review I was contacted by PBS. They were very friendly and asked me to come in to remedy the situation.
It had turned out that the toner used on my hair was too dark and was covering all that beautiful color. Melissa washed out the toner, cleaned up the cut, and blew my hair out to reveal what she had originally colored; magical.
Thank you PBS and Melissa for hearing me and taking immediate action!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jun 10, 2019Previous reviewOther than an impulsive box dye job in high school, I've had nothing done to my hair. I wanted a change.
I went in for a consultation to see how much a cut and a balayage would be, I have long and thick hair so I knew it would be more than what was listed. I was quoted $370, which was over my budget, so instead I asked for something simpler, like highlights. Melissa worked with my budget and said she could do a more subtle balayage, working mostly at the ends. I gratefully accepted, and ended up paying $300, tip included.
I am pretty disappointed with the outcome, I feel like what i received was maybe some highlights/babylights, and an uneven cut.
I hardly notice the difference from my natural highlights apart from a couple bleached streaks. Everyone I've spoken with since also hasn't noticed a difference in color. I appreciate Melissa working with my budget and that she warned me it would be more subtle, but I did not expect this.
Also, my layers are pretty uneven and there are sections of hair that were not trimmed. I get my hair cut every 6 mo - 1 year, it is important that my ends are at the very least trimmed.
I had high hopes for this visit, I wish I had gone somewhere else.
