This is your stereotypical inner city school. There is no playground. The afterschool programs are basically daycare programs for parents that want someone to watch their kids for a few more hours. There is no homework help. The kids are pushed through the grades, even if they don't know the stuff they should. The staff, for the most part, is rude, loud and agressive toward students.
The students are not allowed to talk, step out of line, express themselves (even in art class) or play (even at break time). The children are constantly frustrated and bored, causing them to be aggressive and angry towards eachother, leading to several fights a day. The school does absolutely nothing to discipline the children, except yell at them like evil step-parents or call the local hospital to cart them off to the psych ward in an ambulance.
Parents are not allowed to enter the school until 9 am, even to assist their child in bringing something (like a large tray of cupcakes) to class for a party. There are security guards that dress and act like Corrections Officers. Getting any issues resolved is like getting a root canal.
In short... This place is run like a prison. It's no wonder these kids are always depressed and fighting with eachother.
I sat in on an art class, and the teacher went off on a student because he folded his crayon colored picture in half so it would fit into his backpack. She started screaming about how he was being disrespectful by ruining art. They were told what colors to use, what to draw and how to draw it. There was no freedom of expression.
Now, there are a few teachers at that school that are worth their weight in gold, but the classes are so crowded that they have no personal time with the children at all. The kids that need it, don't get the help they need, even in the afterschool programs that are supposed to tutor the children. They are not allowed to do their homework in the afterschool programs because it is treated like a seperate class with seperate assignments.
If you can help it, never send your children here. While some parts of this school are good, they don't make up for it's deficiencies as a whole.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Uptown R.The Bronx, The Bronx, NY01May 5, 2019
In (1991-1992) I was in the Third Grade in this school (PS90 AKA CES90)... at the time, my teachers name was Mr Ortiz... I was the smallest child in that classroom... I was physically abused by that teacher... He used to punch me, slap me, and threaten me all the time... I remember going home with bruises all over me... I would never wish anyone that type of abuse i went thru... My life was affected by it... PLEASE DO NOT send your kids to this school... Going to this school, was one of the worst things that couldve happened to me (as a child)

Wow, i just had some time today to look into the past... and search for my old elementary school...p.s.90...because i wanted to take my youngest to the Bronx and let him see where i grew up.. i lived 2 blocks from the school..and then i found it and read the reviews, comments.....back in the 70's it was a decent school ...like most things were in the 1970's...(but of course they made the movie "the Warriors" about that time period and place "The Bronx"..yes most of or all of those gangs did exist in and around there and yes they wore their "colors" ... but overall it was a typical inner city school....some fights like any school...but the teachers were good... Mrs. Ben my favorite homeroom teacher helped me out a lot.. I was 2yrs ahead in math and english language for the most part..but my mom could see the writing on the wall sort of speaking... and we moved to brooklyn... then i moved to north N.J.... then south N.J... then Pennsylvania... then south to another state where ill probably stay for a while...but i have fond memories of p.s.90...its a shame that this is how it turned out...blame the Govt... but, the people also are to blame...regardless where you are, the people of any particular community have to unite and fight the system...united we stand divided we fall...

I remember going to this school around 1997 or before. My fondest memories of the school were my sister getting punched in the stomach during lunch and wanting to go to her rescue but one of the grumpy lunch ladies would not let me go. And no one did anything to stop it. I also remember a fight in the lunch room and all the kids going crazy wanting to see the fight and in the midst of all the chaos, one kid pulled me off my seat, to the floor, to get a better view. I also remember getting into a fight with a boy and I'm a girl. :) I remember cops coming into my classroom one day, searching through everyone's book bags in the closet, where we kept our book bags and retrieving a lot of interesting shaped knives. The cops took the book bag and boy, the bag belonged too, with them out of the classroom. That same boy boasted, days earlier, of being a part of some Bloods gang. Oh, yeah! I can't forget the time some boy tried to steal one of my brothers book bag after school in the parking lot, where we all waited for our parents.
Yeah, it was a wonderful school to go too. :) The kids were just darling and the staff did a wonderful job of keeping them under control.
Of course, that was years ago. Who knows what changes were made since then. I've heard rumors of it being split into two separate schools. -shrug-Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
