As my teenage daughter and I drove along the waterfront from Incline Village through Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista, I spotted Old Range Steakhouse and pulled over.
It was closed, but a woman waiting at the door said it opened at 5 p.m.
I checked the menu and got my daughter out of the car.
I love steakhouses. So tonight was going to be a treat.
When we got to the door, it had just opened.
The server put us at a downstairs table with a waterfront view. I was surprised because it could easily fit 6.
      Teresa was our server.
I ordered a Manhattan Bulleit Rye and my daughter had a Sprite.
The glass was festive, and our server poured it from the cocktail shaker into my glass at the table. Fun!
There was a smidge more than a glass, so she left it in the shaker in case I wanted to top off my cocktail.
      Spoiler alert, I did!
My daughter and I wanted the same thing, petite filets. The order came with roasted garlic mashed potatoes.
We also ordered creamed spinach to share. I prefer steamed or sauteed, but I acquiesced. It was a vegetable, and she asked nicely.
Some warm brown bread and creamy butter were brought out to start.
      We enjoyed!
Pretty quickly our mains and spinach arrived. Both were cooked to order and different.
"It was really good," said my teen.
      Wow!
And I thought mine was scrumptious.
So that was a win for us.
      Excellent work, Chef Jaime.
The tab came to $132.15 plus a $26 tip.
We didn't have dessert because we had just indulged in Chef Sahid's pastries at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa, and Casino's Tahoe Provisions & Tahoe To Go.
The pastries were out of this world!
We will be back. Often, I should add.
The tab came to $16.49 plus a $3 tip.

Stopped in and they accommodated us without reservation. I think we got lucky, so make sure to make a reservation!
Great food, nice ambiance, good drinks and a wall of wine... which is always a nice touch!

So... we walked up to the door and didn't identify it as a door so it took us a second to get into the restaurant. Then we watched several other groups of people walk the external perimeter of the restaurant looking for a door. I don't know if the business needs an external light by the door or a kick plate on it or if it's because the door is solid... I can't explain this phenomenon. I just know, it clearly wasn't just us with this issue.
I'm just going to say that if it looks like a door, pull on it. You will look and feel far more stupid for walking up to the door, doing nothing and then walking the perimeter of the building than you will just pulling on a handle or two. Mistakes were made. Learn from ours.

Well, let me tell you about my utterly disappointing excursion to the Old Range Steak House. Traveled all the way from the picturesque shores of Hawaii, expecting to indulge in the finest steaks Lake Tahoe has to offer, only to be met with a flavorless catastrophe. The service was as tasteless as the food itself. We ordered the rib eye steak, hoping for a culinary adventure, but they couldn't even handle a basic charbroil, let alone anything fancier like black and blue or Pittsburgh style.
And talk about the meat , all eye no cap . I mean average by all definitions

The service? Utterly bland, lacking any semblance of personality. We were practically greeted with a cold shoulder. Our server graced our table a mere four times, barely acknowledging our existence beyond taking orders and serving food. And let's talk about the braised beef - no flavor whatsoever, and certainly not the moist, fall-apart tenderness one would expect.

Dessert? Forget about it. We didn't even bother, given the lackluster performance thus far. And to add insult to injury, they had the audacity to tack on a service fee, citing our party size. A party of eight, including four adults and four kids under six - hardly a reason to justify such a fee.

Needless to say, I won't be returning, and I feel obliged to warn my fellow carnivores in search of a decent cut of meat around these parts.

On my sons 14th birthday we were looking forward to stellar steakhouse dinner to celebrate. We made an early reservation for 5:30, which included a $100 deposit we would lose if we didn't show. We made sure to let them know the fact that we were celebrating a birthday in this $100 reservation.

This was the restaurants opening night after being closed for several months. We arrived a few minutes early to a VERY dark restaurant, lit only by candlelight. We asked if we could have one of the four round, 6 top booths. We were told no, just in case they had walk-ins. We were seated at a tight 4 top both. Our server approached us with her notepad in hand and asked what we wanted to drink. No introduction, no smile, no "welcome to Old Range Steakhouse", no personality. You would expect her to offer the wine list, cocktail menu, or recite the specials for the evening. Nothing. She ran off to grab the drinks and returned with "are you ready to order?". She didn't ask if we had any questions about the menu, she just wanted our order. When we asked about the weight/amount of crab legs that came in an order of Alaskan king crab legs, she didn't have any idea. So instead my son ordered the Surf and Turf, a petite filet with side of 2 tiny crab legs for $68. Even my 14 year old thought they were tough, and tasted frozen.

The other food was alright (it might have tasted better if we had felt even somewhat welcome). We knew this was going to be around a $400 dinner, so we were expecting great service and amazing food. I ordered the portobello mushroom caps which consisted of 2 mushroom caps sprinkled with a finely chopped relish of artichoke, and peppers. I guess I was expecting gloriously stuffed portobellos. My other son and husband ordered NY steaks. They were alright. Giagantic hunks of smoked meat that were difficult to cut and to eat. She came quickly to clear our plates like there was a big hurry, I promptly asked for the check. I just wanted out of there.

There were a couple of 2 tops and another family a few booths down from us. All the while I could hear the other family's server discussing wines, and varietals in an extremely friendly, charismatic manner.

My son's Birthday was never mentioned. The whole experience was very uncomfortable for my 2 sons, their father, and myself. My birthday boy and I had continually smiled at our server, offering extreme politeness, hoping to urge some sort of friendly response out of her to no avail. While we we're paying our $350 tab (which could have been a lot more if our server had tried SALES), my husband asked what the reason was why we were told no about sitting at round booth. She repeated what the hostess said about saving them for walk ins. It was now 6:15 pm and I looked around at the empty, dark restaurant and the 4 empty round booths. I guess they were expecting 24 people to bust in at any moment. We were not offered dessert, she just offered boxes. Way to turn them tables girl! We never got one smile from her. She got a $50 tip, which she in no way deserved. I felt like I was at a diner with a waitress with a huge chip on her shoulder. I would have rather been at Mel's Diner. I would have rather given $50 to any server at Mel's Diner. The service at Dennys is better. Bad experience for us all, couldn't wait to leave.

Bottom line- don't bother making a reservation- the tables are reserved for walk-ins anyway. Don't buy into the overpriced slop they try to pass off as upscale steakhouse fare. Don't even bother going.

I can't remember any other restaurant experience in my entire life where I felt so unwelcome.

I made a reservation for this restaurant for a special occasion , from just the entrance the restaurant is beautiful, when you walk in you are greeted by an interesting ambiance , it is athmosperically lit and is the perfect place for a date night . I ordered a Margarita and a filet mignon , we were served with bread that was really soft and delicious . The plating of the food could've been better as I feel like it was somewhat basic , but the Flavors were really good 8/10 , what really topped off the experience for me was the cheesecake and the brownie desert , these were top tier , the cheesecake was creamy and fruity with the strawberry topping and the brownie melts in your mouth like a lava cake it was a perfect finish . Overall , give this place a shot , it's delicious .

We have been here one other time amd it did not disappoint ! Brett our server was great. This restaurant is in the North Shore Kings Beach area. We shared the middle cut Prime Rib and it was so tender and delicious, it came with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli, and they bring you warm bread with soft whipped butter. We started with Shrimp cocktail and wedge salad, both were delicious. They are very generous with all the portions.
      Wonderful bar and wine selection

We hadn't dined at the Old Range in years, but we decided to celebrate a special birthday here this past weekend - and we really enjoyed it. It was quiet the night we went, and the staff gave us a nice table. Great lake views. The restaurant has been updated but it hasn't lost charm - and actually the rear room is just as old timey as we recall. The food was very good and is actually less expensive than it seems from the menu, because the meals are HUGE and many people will want to share them. My son, an 18 year old athlete, could only eat about half his gnocchi. My husband and I shared a Cowboy prime rib and wished we'd ordered the Cowgirl - we had to bring about half home! The sides are all designed to be shared and we couldn't finish those either. We brought a bottle of wine that we like and didn't mind the $30 corkage fee. It was a fun, relaxing evening and we will be back.

The entrees were excellent but the service and appetizers were nothing to write home about and the salad was a joke. The restaurant was also so dark my husband had to use a flashlight to read the menu. For us living further away I don't know that we'd make the drive unless someone else we knew was really set on going there.

Let's start with the good the sunset with the view of this place is so amazing but I would say it's an extremely dark place to where the neighbors next to me had to use their flashlights to see the menu, my sever she was interesting the table behind us had 4 people so she only focused on them and would just pop up and legit pop out she didn't really explain anything idk i have no idea if she expected the tip bigger w the more people but I didn't like it her hospitality.
also the steak is VERY BIG SO THATS A PLUS and they cooked it how I liked it but they do not season the meat at all ! So prepare for that but the mashed potatoes were SOOO SOO GOOD so that's was my only plus I came from pretty far away and me and my husband love trying new steakhouses when we go on vacation and next time I am in town I won't be back go to Gus' bbq 10/10 recccomend !

Such a well executed Steak House. Dimly lit, cozy, great steak cuts, nice wines and tasty cocktails. I've been coming here for many years and look forward to it and love it each time.

Love the Caesar Salad too! Last night my gal and I shared a bottle of Caymus one of our favorite wines. Do it!!!
