Our visit today was a bit disappointing. Service was very slow. Biscuits were delicious. Deviled eggs were fantastic. Entrées were not as good as they have been in the past. Chicken and waffles... very small chicken portion and over cooked. Quiche was over heated.

I planned dinner with my mom, aunt, grandmother, which is a tough group to please. Everyone, even my vegetarian aunt, enjoyed their meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I look forward to coming back and seeing what's new on the menu! They even had a decent selection of local craft beer.

We visited new South kitchen and bar for the first time on Mother's Day after reading several reviews on my yelp feed. I thought this would be a good opportunity for us to try the restaurant out, especially on such a special occasion.
That being said, we found the restaurant very enjoyable. We have reservations for 2 PM and when we arrived, our table wasn't ready yet so we sat at the bar which was mostly empty. We waited we ordered a couple of drinks, a martini and a vodka tonic. The French martini was one of the menu specials and my significant other found it very good.
Once we were seated at our table, we started our order. As we were a bit late for brunch, we decided to get a mix of brunch and lunch so ordered the chicken fried steak and scrambled eggs with cheese grits and she had the fried chicken with a side of collard greens. The chicken fried steak platter was pretty good. The steak was fried perfectly with a really fluffy and crispy crust. I could've used a bit more gravy, and they also included a small salad with pickled onions that was layered on top of the fried chicken steak patty. I would've preferred the salad on the side but just be picky. There was also on the bottom of the platter chicken fried steak. I wasn't really sure if it was some sort of orange juice or complementary sauce but either way, it wasn't needed. fried chicken was really good as well. Fried perfectly. We did request hot sauce when it arrived at the table, but unfortunately the hot sauce didn't make it back to the table before we were finished. Outside of a couple of times the server forgot to bring a couple of requested items back to the table, service was overall strong. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant and advise that you get reservations on busy days and holidays.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 8, 2023Updated review15 check-ins

Last night we had a lovely server - her name was Dori, from NY originally and very familiar with this venue! We started with Scallops and a beautiful Beet Salad! Then a order of Ribs and a Mushroom Flatbread and NEVER forget the Fried Okra! Please if you haven't tried this place - do yourself a favor and go ! Bon Appetit!
Jun 15, 2023Previous reviewOnce again everything was great ! Morgan was a fantastic server and understood all of our wants and needs Fish was fresh and the fried Okra was amazing. The New South Burger rocked my husbands world . Right at the Arbo - go really - you will love it !
Apr 22, 2022Previous reviewI realize that I have re-reviewed this restaurant a number of times...This last visit was pure heaven ! I can't say enough about the Great Service and the Great food and Drinks ! Right up the street from me and I love going there. This night the had my VERY favorite item, which is Soft Shell Crab. It was served deep fried on the small plate menu. Price was 22.00 but so worth every penny of it . My husband had the chowder and the beet salad we shared but the highlight of the night was the Perfect Soft Shell Crab!
Dec 2, 2018Previous reviewAbsolutely a perfect dinner ! It's been really good but this was a perfect 10 ! Started with Fried Oysters that we're lightly battered with a great lemon sauce under them . Moved on to a NC Trout Pan Fried with a Crab Meat Stuffing with a Buttery Lemon Sauce and baby corn on the top ! The fish had the skin on it and no fishy flavor at all ! My friend had the Heritage Pork stuffed with Goat Cheese and Arugula and Pecans ! Our waiter was great and we had perfect service ! Thank you New South !
Jun 4, 2016Previous reviewWent to one of our FAV restaurants again last night..but I have a bone to pick with the CHEF. We had a party of 3.Our Bill ws over 100.00 My daughter is 9 months pregnant...due tomorrow...She ordered the New South Burger for her Entree - asking to hold the bacon because of Nitrates!! We asked if there was any way she could have some Fried Pickles on the Burger. We were willing to pay extra for them....The Waitress was hesistant..but The CHEF SAID..ABSOLUTELY NOT! Explain This one....He has Fried Pickles back there...they have a Frickle Burger which is a Burger with Fried Pickles...but he would not..Not even for a Pregnant woman who offered to pay for the extra ingredient add the fried pickles....Did I say Pickles..and She is Pregnant...WTH?????
Dec 20, 2015Previous review"Just down the road a piece" Did I really say that? Yes, How lucky are we that we have this great Farm to Table Restaurant! This is now our go to place and we are very big food snobs!
Each time it is consistently excellent and the service tonight with Kelsey was perfect. She attended our every need. Tonight we started with the Smoked Trout Dip which is so good I am ordering it for Christmas Eve. My Partner had the NC Tuna with Mushrooms and Collards. It was fresh, grilled medium rare and so tasty! I had the S'room burger done medium rare with lots of mushrooms, truffle Mayo and Cheddar cheese. It was such quality meat. The bun was a perfect fresh brioche! I am so glad we went back and retried this place almost a year ago now. It will fool you being in the Arboretum Strip Mall..it is not to be taken lightly..It is a Foodie Paradise!!Aug 7, 2015Previous reviewBack tonight for a second try....just as good if not better than the first. We started out with the Special App tonight which was a Smoked Trout Dip with Capers, Delicious. Then I ordered the Grilled Romaine Caesar again...I love it! I also had the Oyster Stew which was so good I could have done shots of it!! My husband had the Deep Fried Turkey with Stuffing and Cranberrys, My son had the Roasted Pork Loin with Peach Bourbon Au Jus and Collard Greens. We ended on a Sweet note..with Warm Beignets with Coffee Anglaise Cream. Its a great place..right up the street and really a great atmosphere... Try it...for sure!
Jul 16, 2015Previous reviewIts been about 5 years since I have eaten at New South, it was a nice place but nothing to write home about. Last night however we decided to try it out again. It was so delicious! We sat down with a great server named Jonathon. He was most helpful and informative. We started with a OMB Copper and a New South Old Fashioned for me. They have a great Cocktail list! The old fashioned was made with Woodford Reserve, Domaine de Canton ( Ginger liquor ) and Amarena Cherries ..For those who have not had them..Get them! They are fantastic!
Now, I cannot say enough about the Grilled Romaine Salad. In fact my mouth is watering right now! It is a Charred Caesar Salad, served warm..with the most smokey flavors you can imagine and big shreds of Parm and a tiny pieces of grilled tomato! Next I had the Zucchini Fritters which were a special appetizer, very good and fried crisp! ( As you can tell I had the small plates ) The Pork Belly was next and it was so delightful, warm Butternut Squash and Pecan Salad over Crisp Pork Belly with a Orange Glaze. Outstanding!
My husband had the Pulled Pork Sandwich with slaw and fries. Nice big sandwich and the pork was juicy and delicious!
I am so glad I decided to retry this venue...it was so worth it..and its right down the street! - Dec 11, 20216 check-ins
You can't go wrong with this Arboretum local favorites. They always served up the best of Southern comfort foods. The drinks are always well made. I'm picky about my Lemon drop martini and never had to send any back here.
I took off a star because the service was a bit slow but I guess every restaurant is struggling right now with getting good help. We waited a long time to get our check.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Beth B.Vacaville, CA88022Feb 4, 2023
The atmosphere here was really comfortable and the menu had lots of creative choices. I had the savory cheese and chive waffle with chicken. The gravy wasn't to my liking but the jalapeño pepper jelly was outstanding. Also, you've got to try the baked pimento cheese with crispy wontons!

Love this local farm to table establishment in a very unassuming location. The food is southern comfort cuisine but elevated to almost fine dining. The fried chicken, blackened meatloaf with bacon jam and the beet salad are my favorites. The fried blueberry pie is a delicious dessert, simple to execute but ingenious.
The servers are well versed with the menu, friendly and attentive. I've seen the same staff here over time and I feel like that's a good sign. It's a family run restaurant that must be a great place to work.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 44810232125Jan 4, 2022
My son had a football game not far from here so I stopped by for takeout on the way home. I called my order in for fried okra, salmon, grits and spinach. The guy at the bar was super nice and assured me that I would enjoy my food and that what I ordered was a good choice. Everything was indeed great, the grits were creamy, the salmon was cooked perfectly, and the okra was good as well. Looking forward to returning.

It certainly helps that the cocktail menu is strong here. I started with a gin drink, The Last Word, that came with a floating edible flower. I had to stop myself from eating all the biscuits they brought to the table. Despite it being a big plate, I finished the entire plate of Shrimp & Grits. Our entire group enjoyed our meals. I might return just to hang in the bar area that looks upscale, but could be a casual spot for watching a game with friends.

Great food great service and upbeat atmosphere. Went there with a few friends with no reservations the waitress was fantastic cutting up with us and having a good time. Served us and kept an eye out for us but didn't hound us she was there if we needed. You should go!
