My partner and I have driven by this establishment many times, usually on our way to the Jewel down the street, on Sunday, finally deciding to see what this place was all about. We agree with other reviewers when they say, the price point for the portions that you get are off balance. The food in itself was just ok, we have had better a establishments that charge 5-6 dollars less, with bigger portions. Expect to pay at least 20-30 dollars per main entree, while the apps are 6-10 dollars each, plates are not shareable, getting two entrees, with water to drink and no apps, will set you back about 50.00, the decor alone does not command that pricing.
The service was good, very attentive, but the fact that you are paying high end prices for just ok product, steered us away from coming back again.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Hello Christopher! We are not an average typical "Mexican" restaurant that fills your plate with rice, beans, and cheap ingredients. We are a traditional restaurant focusing on specific regions of Mexico. Mixteco is a Oaxacan region and most an ethnic group. Our recipes are 100% authentic and don't have any other cuisine influences. If you think 50$ are a 'set back'. Try the taqueria 'down the street'

I'm so sad that Mixteco Grill is still closed. We've been grieving her loss since January 2017.

I keep hoping she will return!Jul 17, 2015Previous reviewCreative Mexican gourmet food, excellent service, warm welcoming ambience at the perfect price point for frequent visits. BYOB and takes credit cards. Easy street parking!
Use Open Table to make a reservation. Mixteco is very busy.
Brunch only on Saturday and Sunday.
Dinner Tuesday thru Sunday.Feb 18, 2015Previous reviewThe husband and I had a delightful Valentine's Day 2015 date dinner at Mixteco Grill.
The regular menu was unavailable and we chose from the offering on the four course fixed price menu.
All selections were delicious and beautifully played, perfectly sized to meet the diner's appetite without being too small nor too large.
The cream of mushroom soup was outstanding and a perfect beginning for a wintry bitter col Chicago evening. The husband enjoyed a very good grilled calamari salad. Both of us are the seafood rice timbale accompanied by a delicious broth. For our meat courses I had the chicken breast medallions in a black mole. He ate the pork tenderloin medallions in a tamarind mole.
Our desserts were the warm chocolate cake with house made strawberry ice cream sprinkled with pomegranate arils.
We brought our own wine and Alejandro as well as the ate entice expediter a and bussers gave us very good service.
The restaurant had beautifully times their reservations and seemed to well accommodate about 4 seatings!
I highly recommend Mixteco Grill.Sep 4, 2014Previous reviewBYOB
Reservations through Open Table.
One of our favorite spots for weekend brunch or dinner Th-Su! Easy street parking usually.
I love the guacamole, salsas, chips, grilled shrimp, vegetarian enchiladas, house made sorbets.
The husband enjoys the lamb in mole negro, chicken dishes, omelets.
The attention to freshness, variety of flavors, service and overall quality and value for price paid is excellent!!!
I highly recommend Mixteco Grill and recommend reservations because it is very popular.Jan 23, 2013Previous reviewTerrific BYOB that changes it's menu about every 2-3 months.
Vegetarian items are tasty.
My daughter loves the lamb.
The last visit the husband enjoyed chicken breast in a tamarind-pasillo sauce and I had three vegetarian enchiladas in a delicious salsa verde.
The black beans are tasty, but mushy.
The corn tortillas are tender and very fresh.
The washroom is immaculate.
The service is very good.
Street parking is usually not a problem.
I highly recommend getting reservations for the weekends.
Bring your own, and come hungry for a very good meal!Jun 7, 2012Previous reviewThe husband, and daughter the younger went with me to dinner here.
The decor is simple, very colorful and comfortable.
Service is attentive and timely. BYOB is great. Parking on the street wasn't difficult on Tuesday at about 7 PM.
Price point is appropriate.
The husband and daughter shared the Tacos Ensenada
(two soft tortillas with tilapia, avocado-serrano mayonnaise, cabbage, and pico de gallo) and enjoyed them very much.
I had the Calamares Al Ajillo (wood grilled calamari mixed with baby arugula, roasted red pepper, and esquites in a ajillo sauce and lime juice) from the appetizer menu as my entree which was a nice portion and delicious. I also ate the vegetable salad which was huge and delicious with a variety of vegetables, not just cukes, tomato, and lettuce.
They shared the chicken breast stuffed with duck breast, and the beets stuffed with a cold chopped vegetable salad (2 whole cooked beets, hollowed, filled with the veg salad plated on lettuce).
They were very full after their meal and had no room for dessert.
I had the fresh fruit cocktail (watermelon and cantaloupe chunks) sprinkled with lime juice and chili for dessert. It was very refreshing and just right for the end of my meal.
We definitely plan to return. - Mar 14, 2016
Everything was excellent here from beginning to end. I went with my family for brunch. My sister has been taking Spanish for the last six years and she was able to get some practice in with our waiter. He was so sweet and patient with her
You're probably wondering about the food though?!?!? Well it was delicious!!!! I had the Oaxacan Omelet. I haven't had mole in a while and I liked that the flavor wasn't too strong, but blended perfectly with the eggs. I also enjoyed the plantains. Only regret I had was we didn't save room for dessert. Prices are reasonable, service is excellent, and food is wonderful. I will be back!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 3, 2016
This is some of the best Mexican food I have eaten in Chicago. Went here with a friend by chance when we got hungry driving home from the middle of nowhere. So we randomly stopped here and were pleasantly surprised.
We started with queso, which was unfortunately not the best part of the meal. While it tasted good, it was literally just melted cheese and was hard to eat.
I ordered steak tacos and my friend had the chicken tacos. Both were delicious. I ordered enchiladas to go for the wife. She reported that they were delicious. I wish this restaurant were closer to me, but will be backHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 373725204Sep 9, 2009
FINALLY checked this place out. I live in the neighborhood, drive by it every single day... but finally we tried it. It was a Wednesday night at 7:45... and when I told the hostess "we're 4" she was surprised we didn't have a reservation and wasn't sure if she could get us in. DAAAAAAANG! On a Wednesday???
Well, she got us at a table. The last free one in the place.
We had the tamales in mole sauce to start with. Probably my favorite dish of the night... I could have had another tray of those things. I also had the dorado which was excellent. The sauce was scrumptious and I could have swam in those mashed potatoes.
A couple complaints that ALMOST dropped this place to only a 3 star for me. The waitstaff was SLAMMED... on a Weds. We sat down and were asked within 2 minutes if we were ready to order... which of course we were not... and then he didn't come back for 20 minutes. On top of it, they REALLY need to do something about the noise level in there. We were dining with a friend of ours that does some decorating and he said that fabric on the walls could cut down on the noise. It was difficult to even hear the people at our four top... I can't even imagine how annoying that would be with a group.
Good food... which is why I'm giving it a 4... but really, the service and the atmosphere were only 3 stars in my book.
But I'll definitely be back!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Maria D.Chicago, IL348177173Dec 4, 2016
Great value and a perfect place for a casual Mexican dinner. Warning, this place is ideal for a gathering with friends or family, but a little bright for an intimate dinner. Don't book it for a date, it's not likely to score you a shot at romance :)
My husband is a big fan of traditional Mexican cuisine as we know it in Chicago. He wanted good food in a relaxed setting for his birthday - he was absolutely pleased with my choice! So was our 14 year old and teens can be very picky!
The food is solid, great flavors and impressive with general quality. For instance, my husband's Carne Asada had a ribeye and it was prepared to perfection! I thought they had an interesting version of Ceviche with Mahi Mahi - very fresh and delicious! They have plenty of vegetarian options as well.
With BYOB they were able to provide a bigger glass for my wine and a frosted glass for my hubby's beer!
Excellent service - our waiter Juan was awesome! Very quick and extremely accommodating and he even brought out a birthday dessert with a candle. I want to make a point to mention that he had a big smile on his face every time he showed up at our table!
In small BYOB restaurants, the wait staff is usually very busy, the service is rushed, you feel like they want to get you in and out. I was a little worried this would happen on my husband's birthday night, but Juan made us feel totally welcome - thank you Juan!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

BEST MEXICAN I HAVE HAD!
Wow, I came here with a party of five and everyone ordered different dishes...and each one was totally delicious and had an interesting twist that I have never experienced before (and I have had plenty of Mexican). I ordered the mushroom soup...and plantains...very tasty.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 25, 2016
Fantastic Food and Service. We ordered a slue of appetizers to split: mahi mahi tacos, veggie empanadas and shrimp taquitos. All were scrumptious. It's a great atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

Tried the chicken enchiladas in the black mole sauce tonight...yessir! Chicken was done just right, sauce was thick and made me real happy-like. And BYO? And they take reservations on OpenTable? I wish Mixteco was a little closer to my home, but otherwise this was a solid outing!
Kudos to the staff, very accommodating with my eight-month-old tonight. Sure, I showed up at 5:30 on a Wednesday, but still...Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
