I wrote this review a YEAR ago; in going through my review drafts for year-end Yelping, I realized that somehow, I never clicked post! Though the review was finished it just stayed as a draft. Sorry! Here goes:
Bookmark this one! Irish family owned pub. No children allowed! Enjoy your grown up pleasure of smoking while you drink your grown up beverage. Nice big U-shape bar with purse hooks. Big dining room with fireplace. Little bandstand.
Very clean bathroom where each stall has its own little sink.
Friendly barmaid who may be an owner. Just four taps but lots of bottles including Harp and Guinness. Fish and chips special today (Friday) for $7.95. We each had this and I subbed sweet potato fries for regular. Both kinds were excellent. The coleslaw was creamy, finely shredded and perfect and the battered cod was very very good. Three pieces would have been better than two but hey, eight bucks. Rest of the menu looked good too.
Would definitely return.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Robert P.Bethlehem, PA311Jan 31, 2020
The best ribs that I've had in a long time. The sauce on my ribs was sweet and sour, which was an awsome change from traditional heavy barbecue sauces. In addition they were cooked so well that the meat came right off the bone using only a fork.
As good as the flavor of my ribs was the price...$10.95 which included golden brown french fries, and the chefs very popular cucumber salad, as well as warmed dinner role.
This entree was as good or better than you will find in many of Bethlehem's "fine dining" establishments.
Don't overlook this local Irish bar...especialy for there friday and Saturday night dinner specials!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jeff R.Bethlehem, PA225498877Jun 6, 2018
One of the friendliest bars in town, and an Eastside fixture for years. Mahoney's is often over shadowed by the larger "cellarette" down the street. Mahoney's offers smoking, and there are no persons allowed under 21. The service is very attentive and kind. Danielle does a great job behind the bar. The hidden gem here is the homemade soup. The food here is very good. The New England Clam Chowder I had was excellent. It did not need anything additional at the table. In the past I've had the Maryland Crab soup and that was a winner as well. One of the best chowders I've ever eaten, was the New England. Blair Weisner turns out some good specials daily out of the kitchen. I had the sausage sandwich with peppers and onions, and added provolone cheese. It was a well executed sandwich. The peppers and onions were cooked perfectly, holding the integrity of the vegetable. It was a good quality roll as well. The beer is cold, the food is good, soups are great, and the service and people are friendly. If you can tolerate some stale cigarette smoke, you will enjoy Mahoney's.

TERRIBLE! DO NOT GO HERE!!!! We were both served spoiled flounder stuffed with crabmeat. It was aweful! I sent mine back & my friend just left hers as she was afraid to get anything else. We both violently vomited 10 minutes after leaving this dive hole in the wall! We were from out of town in Allentown for the weekend and this caused us to go home early and ruin our trip!! I emailed the so called restaurant and have yet to get a response. DO NOT GO HERE! The place is dark, dirty, old and serves bad/spoiled food!
BEWARE...its just not worth it.....Trust me!!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 17884113Mar 18, 2007First to Review
I went in here for St. Pat's day thinking it was a decent restaurant, and not just a bar, since it describes itself as a "family restaurant." Leave the kids at home. This is your typical smoky bar. The crowd, like the decor, looked old and tired. I will not make the mistake of going there again.

Yes, it's a smoky bar, but with good food. They ALLOW SMOKING, no kids under 18 ! They serve steamed clams, surf and turf (on weekends), good burgers, shrimp baskets, fried chicken, fish & chips, club sandwiches, etc.! The chef used to cook for another seafood joint in town, The Cove, before the owner retired...
The bartenders are the owners' daughters, plus Natalie... they are all very nice!
It's only smoky at the bar. They have music on weekends, and Irish specials for the St. Patty's Day celebration.... Yes, it's divey, but if you like to party a little, have some good food and drinks, I think you'd have a good time here!
Probably the best place for food in the area with a smoking license (who would have ever thunk, you'd need a smoking license??).Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Kevin G.Bethlehem, PA0142Oct 23, 2014
Good atmosphere, good food, good jukebox, friendly staff, reasonable prices. What more could you want?

Two of us ate there on 7/20/17. We each had a different special for dinner. They tasted great. Homemade, warm fresh bread, real cloth table cloths, tap beer was run through clean taps and the bathrooms were spotless. It is a smoking bar/restaurant but with limited smell. Bartender doubled as our waitress and she was great. Everything in the place is old but clean and maintained well. My first visit for dinner and I will go back.

If youre looking for a new place to go and have a few drinks with friends, go somewhere else. Smoking bars can be ok, but this one isnt because there are NO WINDOWS! You have to incubate in the second hand smoke of old regulars who are there to complain about their wives. Its reminiscent of your friends basement that he turned into a bar and when you go to visit him he blows smoke in your face. Food? I got the cheesesteak and couldnt finish it because it was disgusting, id be afraid to try anything else. The only reason this gets two stars and not one is because everybody was incredibly friendly. Just go to Stahleys.

I've eaten at Mahoney's many times, and the food has always been good. Sometimes great. The people that work there are nice and will treat you right. Sometimes on Friday night they even have Shep, who plays and sings cover tunes from the 50's-80's. Fun crowd. One downside is smoking is allowed.
