Been coming in here for a while, on average once a month and the haircuts have been good. But a recurring theme is appointments being delayed or blown off and lack of accountability and apologies.
Today was the final straw I checked in on time, was told at the desk they would tell Karen (owner) I was there, 10-15 minutes later NO SHOW. I walked out, there was no one at the front desk to talk to. Call them and no response, they know I checked in and must have seen I am no longer there. Come in 3 hours later to see what gives - "oh we just got your message" said the same receptionist. "Sorry didn't you see I had left", attention to detail is nice. Karen comes out all huffy "I don't want to deal with this, I haven't had a break or lunch". "So you couldn't have called me during my appointment time??" I got a "I'm done, bye." Very sad.
Good luck staying in business! Plenty of other good salons to pick from.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Des, I understand that you were hurt that i didn't want to do your hair anymore and I'm sorry that I felt it was necessary. Here's why; First of all I will be the first one to admit that I tend to run behind and occasionally we make a booking mistake. I do a lot of color and color timing is not always predictable. My desk usually catches I'm running late and calls the next client. The thing is on the day your talking about I was less then ten minutes behind and when I went to get you in the lobby you had left. I figured you were upset and walked out and my time was immediately absorbed supporting my staff. It was a very busy day. The actually reason I told you that I didn't want to do your hair anymore is that when you came in angry later in the day you approached me very mad yelling at me with your fists clenched. I did not feel safe. Additionally, I did not come out "huffy" I was actually scared and I calmly said hello to you. I know enough about angry men to know that it would be unwise to continue a professional relationship with you. Additionally, there had already been a few instances of unattractive conversations that had left my receptionist(s) in tears during the previous few years that you had been coming to the salon. I urge any woman to do the same.

I have the best experience with Carina Mora at Magnolia Avenue Salon. I have very thick, curly hair and stubborn grays. Carina has been a blessing! I struggled to find a stylist that could get my color right and who could cut my layers well. From day 1, Carina has been able to wow me every time! Her attention to detail and customer service is the best I've ever had. I highly recommend Carina.
I love the salon's easy internet-based appointment scheduling. If you are uncomfortable booking online, call over to the salon and talk to Patrick. He'll work out an appointment for you. He is very kind and has excellent customer service. He is always friendly and willing to help.
Thank you for your amazing work Carina! You are the very best!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - H R.Los Angeles, CA6522Mar 10, 2024
Not good at all. Owner burnt my scalp with the blow dryer and when I pulled back in pain, she denied burning me and pressed the blow dryer, while blowing hot air, on my arm to prove to me she didn't burn me. I was speechless.
She was juggling me and another client at the same time and seemed frazzled. She kept getting my hair tangled in the hair brush as she tried to blow it out.
I never went back.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

I’m so sorry your blow dry
was uncomfortable. I do remember your hair being very tangly and you being unusually sensitive. I was surprised when you said I burnt you and blew the dryer on your arm to show you it was not very hot. The dryer never ever touched your skin. I immediately cooled it down and you said it was fine. I’m sorry you felt I was rushed in the end. I was surprised to see this review. - Jan 30, 2024
I haven't had a haircut since May of last year so I was definitely long overdue for a new do! New cut and color for the upcoming Lunar New Year! Vicki has been my hairstylist since 2006 and she is the best at what she does!

I went to Corey to have a color correction and cut. She was rude and condescending. She blew off my questions and didn't listen to my wishes, barely looking at the pics I brought. She rushed through the process. I have a huge patch on the top back left side where no color got to the roots. I left with flat grey. I think the only "color" she used was toner. Thankfully it washed out and when it did, my color was the exact same as when I walked in.
The cut was equally unprofessional. I have a straight bob with swept bangs. She started adding "layers" which I did not want. These are not layers though. It looks like I took some old scissors and hacked randomly.
Corey professes to be a blonde specialist. At close to $500 I expect a professional and my color and cut was worse than a "super cut".
Honestly the worst. Too bad zero stars is not an option.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

So thankful to have Corey at Magnolia! I used to travel down to Orange County just to have her work her magic. She's incredible with highlights/balayage, not to mention a delight to spend time with.

I booked with Corey, a new stylist at the salon that moved here from Orange County. I have very fine hair and haven't been able to find a stylist that can blend the blonde in well with my natural color and fine texture without it looking chunky. She also got my hair done very quickly and efficiently which I appreciated. My full balayage and haircut used to take 4 hours and she saved me half the time.
I also recently sent my husband and son to see her and they are getting lots of compliments on their cuts.
I am so beyond pleased to have finally found a stylist that can get my blonde color right with a perfect cut to match. If you have blonde hair- make sure to request Corey!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lisa C.Kentfield, CA023Mar 24, 2024
I have never written a review on Yelp but since I gave the owner several chances to respond to my communication request and that failed, I decided the only way to stand up for myself is to write this. It's long but it is therapeutic to write it all out.
I went to Karen Davis, the owner, to get advice on a layered haircut that was choppy and disconnected. I had long, curly hair and didn't want to go too short. Her advice was to cut the length a little and layer it differently. What I ended up with was a a shaggy bob which looked strange on me. I went back to see if she could just lighten it up on top and she convinced me to graduate the layers all the way around. I was reticent but she promised she would leave the length.
Well, when I saw her starting to chop away I winced. Her next words were, "If I have to manage your emotions I am going to give you a bad haircut. Just close your eyes and breathe." I was shocked and felt silenced. Then she said that she thought this "shorter" look was going to look ''so much better than the white trash haircut I had before." I couldn't believe my ears! I was so insulted I couldn't speak! My hair had been long but it was not white trash by any means.
She had to take a break and do someone's hair so I ran to the bathroom and started crying. I couldn't leave mid-cut so I waited. She finished and said that I was going to love it once she styled it. She was very rough with me when styling, leaving 4 round brushes in my hair and kept scratching my face, not very careful.
I was distraught and I pointed out that not only was it too short (she chopped it to my ears) it was uneven. She then said, "well that is the nature of curly hair, just don't look at it and get a hobby." Another insult to injury. I should want to look at my hair. Then her colleague came over and said, "Oh you have a white afro!" That was NOT my goal.
I need to mention that I paid twice! I only wanted the first haircut tweaked but when I tried to schedule with her there was nowhere to book just a tweak, so I booked a re-cut on the site. 2 minutes before I came the front desk called me as I was parking and he said Karen was very angry I had booked a full hour for her just to tweak it. I told him I tried calling and asking but there was no call back and nowhere on the website to do so. He then said in order to keep the appointment I'd have to pay for a full re-cut since her 'time is valuable'. Well so is mine, and it's my hair, but I said I would.
When I got there I asked her why she was upset and she said that I should have just texted her and she could have squeezed me in. I didn't know to do that. None of this was professional at all and I spent 400$ to be insulted and have my hair ruined.
At the end she said if I needed anything to text her, but to wait a week. So I waited a week and then texted her my dissatisfaction and shock over how I was treated and wanted an apology and a refund. It was ignored. I called the front desk and they said she would contact me. Ignored.
It looked so bad that I decided I needed extensions (elsewhere) which I have never had. This cost me an extra $1000
I have never had such a bad experience.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 2Business owner information

Additionally I’m always happy to “tweak” or adjust anything. My front desk would never say that I was very angry. That is ridiculous.

Just got my hair highlighted and cut with Karen and wow. She did an amazing job. I was a little nervous having just moved to Mill Valley from LA. I love my colorist and LA and needed to find someone who could fill her big shoes. Karen didn't disappoint. My color is beautiful. On top of that there's easy parking, the salon is spotless and well done, and everyone is super friendly. This will definitely be my new spot.
