It's a shame that this place has only two reviews. 1 from someone who actually ate here and obviously enjoyed the food, and another, with a stupid name, who just so happened to walk buy and didn't like the looks of the place.
My girlfriend and I have been to SE Asia twice in recent years and this is the closest thing you can get in the states that we know of (not to mention it's by far the cleanest SE Asian noodle kiosk we've come across anywhere) Awesome bowl of noodles with a menu that tends to change every week or so. When your not some judgy, pretentious onlooker like Gudi-whatever, and talk with the chef and taste the food, you can tell he makes everything with a deep passion from the roots he still has for his home country.
We frequented Union Market before Khao Poon started, but now we just can't stop coming in to get our weekend noodle fix.
Try Thip Khao as well, I believe the same Chef consulted the menu.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Tiffany H.Durham, NC485019Oct 20, 2015First to Review
This pop-up stand at Union Market is from the owners of Thip Khao and Doi Moi. I've been there twice now - once for the green curry noodles and once for the Massaman noodles and both were delicious! This was a welcome addition for Southeast Asian flavors after the Maketto pop-up disappeared.

Qualifier - I did not eat here. I am writing the review based on my observations of the place. The purveyors of this place need to work on hygiene. The man that was serving the food the day we were there handled everything - money, register, napkins to blow his nose, food, etc without washing his hands, I'm sure the food can be good, but fair warning - hygiene does not seem to be a priority here. Tighten that up and it could be a great place!

This is what i LOVE about union market.. despite being over the board "hipster" they have very good authentic cuisine. When Maketto's stall left for bigger and better things, there was a big hole in my heart. Where will I get amazing SE Asian noodles from in the area?? Well Khao Poon came to the rescue. I normally get there too late to be able to get a traditional chicken/pork base stock soup, but last weekend all the options were still available. There's normally 3 choices, a curry, a vegan/vegetarian, and meat base soup. I'm not a SE Asian Curry fan. As a traditionalist, a non beef marrow stock Pho is blasphemy. BLASPHEMY. Therefore I got the chicken rice noodle soup. I love that it came with chili oil-- which is not for the faint of heart. If you can't handle spice, ask for it on the side. The soup was delicious. Noodles perfectly cooked. It tasted just like the Hu Tieu in Vietnamese restaurants at Eden Center. Yay to Khao Poon.. now if only I can get out bed early enough to enjoy this every weekend.

I have been to Khao Poon MANY times since they opened in Union Market and love the food. The owner switches out the curries and broths periodically, which makes for a nice change. My favorites are the yellow curry and massaman curry, but I have enjoyed all of noodle bowls that I have tried. The ingredients are fresh, and you can tell that the owner really cares about the quality of his food. I highly recommend trying them.
