It is not true because they don't open the exact open hours. Meaning that it is based staff available and time frame. They would open during the moon festival and then they're closed for two or three months after that. Even when they open, there are… more

As I was heading to dinner with my friend, we see several people walk by with boxes from Golden Gate Bakery. She exclaimed, "OMG, they're open??" She then began to rave about how amazing these egg tarts were and how popular they are, with always a long line stretching out front.

We decided to make a pit stop at the bakery because I had to see what the hype was about, and lucky for us, there was no line! It was $2 each, which is definitely higher than the standard pricing for egg tarts you get at other bakeries. It was delicious and had the right amount of sweetness, a nice, flakey crust, and a tender custard center. I would return again but I don't think it's something that I would wait an hour for.

Best egg tart I've ever had, and I grew up on egg tarts. Beautiful crispy crust that's flaky. Eggy and fluffy inside. I had two in one sitting. Get it.

The last two times I went, they weren't serving the egg tarts until 1 pm. The times seem to be a bit inconsistent but it's worth it! Brave yourself for the price though ($3.75 each, $40 for a dozen I believe)

Only for people who truly like hong kong style egg tarts. It's traditional so legit eggy... would be perfect for western palattes if they sprinkled sausage bites over it. Put some Tabasco on top of it and that's an egg breakfast tart!

Long wait line but quick service. Take to go only.

I got lucky with no lines and no wait time! I was not so lucky the past 2 times prior to this during mid autumn festival and waited so long for mooncakes that I gave up. However, yesterday afternoon, I was able to get my hands on those delicious egg tarts, 1 red bean mooncake and 1 coconut tart. Let me tell you..this is the best egg tart I have ever had! I like that the crust is thin and the first bite doesn't yield flakes and cakes all over you. The crust and the egg tart itself stayed in tact. It was not too sweet, creamy and had the consistency of a cream brûlée. The egg tarts are up to $3.75 each now..yeah they're not cheap but they're worth it!

Golden Gate bakery was also one of my grandma's go to when she was alive so it's nostalgic for sure. I haven't came by in years plus it's hard to catch when they open. You have to get lucky or see a line forming that's how you know they're opened! Otherwise, the many times I walked by and they're just all boarded up. Note that you can not go into the bakery anymore. A lady will peek out from behind the door to take your order and cash. It's a little secretive, if you know you know! Even tho the bakery's schedule is inconsistent, it makes it that much special when you can get your hands on those little, golden yellow egg tarts!

Finally after waiting in line for 30 mins, I got the famous and infamous egg tarts. I would say it is worth the wait. It was so good: the thickness of the filling, the crispy crust, and the creaminess of the taste. On top of that, it is not overly sweet. That means the sugar doesn't overpower other flavors. I can really taste so many things at the same time. But I would say...for someone who travels to Asia pretty often, their tarts are not the best ones I have had, maybe not even SF. But they are good enough. But will I wait again? Maybe not. Haha.

Legendary Egg Tart Destination! A 40-year-old Chinatown institution, the bakery is also the place for other Chinese baked specialties, including egg custard tarts, coconut macaroons, sweet rice cakes and vanilla cream buns.

      Cash only!

Service is quick and all done from the street. No entry into the bakery.

Probably the best egg tarts I've ever had.

My boyfriend and I came here on a Sunday afternoon, and there were ~10-15 parties ahead of us. We ended up waiting for an hour or so to get our egg tarts ($3.75 each or $45 for a dozen).

It was a little funny to see the puzzled looks of passersby since it did seem like there was a line of people waiting in front of a closed bakery. Although the bakery looked closed, it was opened. There was a worker inside who would open the door to take orders, collect money, and bring out the order.

The egg tarts were freshly baked so they were warm and heavenly. The crust was flaky, soft, and not super thick. The crust to egg custard ratio was perfect. The egg custard was moist, had the perfect amount of sweetness, and basically melted in my mouth.

I got a dozen to share with my family, and they loved them. If you love egg tarts and have never been here, I highly recommend Golden Gate Bakery!

I think March is definitely a tough season. There is a lot of warmth inside me, but it feels chilly outside. Or maybe there is a constant desire for fulfillment that this world cannot provide.

Golden Gate Bakery was one of those surreal but grounding experiences that awakened some of the wonder and curiosity in me as we waited in front of what looked like a gated, abandoned building. From what I've heard, the open times are inconsistent, and they run out of stuff pretty quickly. What I do know is that we made it in time and were lucky to have cash (they only accept cash).

You can't go in or out. The lady has to open the door to take your order. And then she slips inside and brings out these amazing, piping hot egg tarts. Like the whole experience is an...experience. Tourists as well as Californians who have never heard of Golden Gate Bakery will question aloud, "what is this place?" Or "is this place good?" as they either pass by or succumb and join the ever growing line.

We got three egg tarts ($3.75 each) and did not regret the 20 min wait. Was definitely the best egg tart that I have ever had.

"Is Golden Gate Bakery open today?" Is the question of the decade. As a Bay Area native, I've only been here a couple of times since it's either closed or has a super long line. This place is CASH ONLY so remember to head to the atm before lining up.

Egg tarts are yummy! Super thin and flakey crust. I can taste the butter from the tart. Generous amount of egg custard in the center which makes it a perfect bite!

I docked 1 star because I can never tell when it is open. I came on multiple occasions just to find out that they are on vacation lol.

I was surprised to see that Golden Gate Bakery was back open -- after such a long time that they were closed. This was one of the places that I would go to ever since I was a child, and Golden Gate Bakery is quite the delicacy. It's the first time they've opened since the pandemic so you KNOW I flocked into the line QUICK! The only down side was that these custard tarts are $3.75 which made me hesitant to try it again, but I ended up letting go of that silly thought and stayed instead.

The tarts were honestly as yummy as when I had it a long time ago. The crust was flaky, and the tart by itself was just as soft and juicy like when I had it like a child. It brought lots of nostalgia back.

The ambiance was pretty good considering it was sunny in the afternoon.

I'd definitely stop by again -- the long wasn't too long and are still some of the best in Chinatown!

We waited 1.5 hours for two egg tarts and all I can say is that I would wait another 1.5 hours for some more...

The line wasn't too bad but it was moving slower than a snail. A lot of people opted to leave since the line barely moved but we knew we had to wait. Once we finally made it to the door, the cute old lady asked us how many we wanted, we just wanted two.

She said "ok" and went back inside. The man in front of us ordered 4 dozens so he was definitely gonna be there a while.... The egg tarts are $3.75 each so we spent $7.50. We had $8 and told her she could keep the change, she was soooo happy.

The egg tarts were brought out to us in a paper bag and they were warm. I couldn't wait any longer so I took a bite there and then. OMG.... I was in heaven. It was good and nothing like I had ever eaten. It was warm, tasty, soft, and crispy at the same time. It was so good! My friend and sister said it tasted too "egg-y" for their liking but for me it was perfect.

      I wish I would've bought like 50 dozens...
