excellent tour. lovely grounds. fascinating stories about Gari Melchers & the turn of the last century. I am amazed I'd heard of John Singer Sargent but not Melchers. his art is hard to categorize - he seemed to span several styles over time, but not necessarily in the sequence that the rest of the world did. very enjoyable afternoon to look around and enjoy his paintings. we also spotted a marker on the grounds that turned out to represent one of the farthest upriver landing spots where Capt John Smith interacted with the native tribes. pretty cool.

This is a hidden gem worth taking your time to visit. The art and estate is phenomenal, very interesting tour (especially if you're an art snob like myself). Plus there are bonus hiking trails to the river. Would highly recommend!

A beautiful historic home if an important American impressionist that was lovely to see. Well worth the stop to learn about this artist and his works. The guides and docents were informative and knowledgeable. This place is special, and was a highlight of our June 2021 trip to Virginia. The house was beautifully preserved with family treasures in not only Melchers' own works, but in the decorative arts he and his wife collected while living abroad as he studied painting. The studio and gallery were chock full of his beautiful works and worth the time to appreciate. Then into the historic portion of Fredericksburg for a nice lunch after! It was a great way to spend a day!

A special place in Fredericksburg. The preschooler program is a family favorite; my kids love going to this art class, which is offered once a month. It is a special experience for kids to be in the actual studio of Gari Melchers and get to be up close to his paintings. The studio is worth a visit for art fans (of any age), entry fee. We also sometimes walk the gardens and paths to enjoy the season changes, no entry fee.

I'll admit that the only reason I stopped in was because every day I would pass it and I had no idea who this guy was and why there is a museum dedicated to him in my town. Upon entering I'm greeted with literature and a nice smile from the homes curator. I listened to her refer to Mr. Melcher over and over and in my mind was smiling because with her accent it sounds like she was calling him Mr. Feltcher... and that one I'm NOT explaining. You look it up. So I started to browse from room to room and discovered he was a talented impressionist painter. I was more interested in browsing the grounds and the home itself which was pretty elaborate. I'm always kinda creeped alittle bit by the lace and doilies of that time period though. While I can't say it was the most exciting thing I've seen and I probably won't be going back, I did learn who he was and what that house on the hill was all about. Me ~
