Ok to get your bbq fix and fries. Menu does offer a wide range of food offerings. Staff is great.

I went to Carter's on my first visit to High Point. You can tell that it is popular and local favorite. People were being greeted by their first names, while headed to their favorite seat with the morning paper in hand. My waitress was awesome. She was personable, friendly, and quite the character. She should take her show on the road when she decides to retire.
Carter's is like visiting your granny's or great aunt's house. The one who was raised in the south and never left. Not the "sidditty" one, but the one that serves food on paper plates and makes the best sweet tea in town. My food arrived on a Hefty plate with more food than my stomach could hold, and it was very tasty. Despite already having more than I could eat, my meal also came with the biggest biscuit I've ever seen.
I also had lunch from Carter's, and again, it tasted like "home." It was like the food at the family cookout. I can say some of the best bbq, baked beans, greens, and hush puppies I've tasted from a restaurant.
The reasoning behind my four stars is the location does need a bit of a makeover. Don't take away the character, just give it a little boost.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 1175063919Nov 22, 2018
I stop by Carter Brothers every now and then, the bbq is pretty good, up until a couple months ago it had been a few years since I had been here. The recent visits just weren't as good as they used to be, Carter Bros used to be one of my favorites for bbq, but they seem to have fallen off a bit in my opinion, or atleast this location maybe. Not a big fan of their style of baked beans, but the green beans and sweet potato casserole are really good.
I recently tried the Cowboy Chicken, which on the menu is described as grilled chicken breast topped with bacon, cheddar cheese and smothered in their "famous" honey bbq sauce. It was actually shredded or pulled chicken with a few crumbles of bacon and some shredded cheddar on top that wasn't even melted, all swimming in a crazy sweet sauce. It was way over sauced, so much of the overly sweet sauce overpowered everything else, a little of that sauce goes along ways on sweetness, I'd ask for the sauce on the side if I was to ever order this again.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jame P.Stokesdale, NC0292Sep 3, 2022
I went here for breakfast it was terrible. The food was brought out little by little. First I got eggs and gravey. 5 minutes later I got a biscuit. Then 5 minutes after that I got my sausage. Evidentially preparing all the food at the same time is too difficulty for the people who work here. I asked to speak to the manager because the food got cold as I waited for them to compete my order. The response was he is on break. Stay away from this place. Terrible service and even worse food.

I had breakfast here and it was packed. Quick and friendly service. She warned us that the biscuits were massive. And yeah, you could share one with three people. No one that ordered a biscuit finished their biscuit. I ordered an omelet. It was big but light. Just right, really.
The next day, they catered our lunch. The BBQ is legit, and I especially loved the potato salad. The banana pudding was wicked sweet but also lovable. This is most certainly indulgent food, and not to be had more than once a year. I could do twice.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Oct 9, 2019
I've only had breakfast here so can't comment on any of the other offerings. The menu is quite large with a variety to appeal to everyone. Breakfast was average. The cheddar omelet was good but tasted like it was cooked with margarine instead of butter, hate margarine! I asked for the bacon crispy so I would't get floppy undercooked bacon and it was surely crispy, almost burned. The hash browns were very good and the biscuits really great but without real butter, a bit dry. Not sure I would return for breakfast.

I love this place and the hard working young staff. The food is always plentiful, fresh and delish.
Go back to 2018. 2019 is not going well. While placing a carry-out order, they were out of an entree. So I asked the young lady to hold as I am getting the second choice from my wife. The young lady hung up on me.
When I called back, I thanked her for hanging up on me. Instead of taking my order, she wants me to talk to a manager. No time for that, I just drove to the place.
Please wake up and return to the wonderful service I am use to. I know this is a glitch.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 16, 2018
Carter Brothers has a pretty big menu for a BBQ joint, and on the whole, they do everything fairly well. I would say their pork BBQ is just average compared to most places around, but you can certainly count of them for any typical lunch sandwich and sides to be done well at a reasonable price.
For me personally, I love their hot dogs here. The flavor combination of their chili and cole slaw with some onions and mustard is just right, and the frank on the inside is very juicy too. The footlong version tastes more like the hot dogs at Costco, larger and with more robust flavor.
The staff is always friendly, and the food usually comes out to you very quickly. I've gone here many times over the years, and would go back when convenient, with the understanding that the BBQ here is not going to be anything special. I would not point out of towners here for a place that represents authentic Lexington style Q.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - James M.Raleigh, NC416144348Dec 27, 2017
So my mom brought take out from Carter Brothers one night and of course I took full advantage of free food. Needless to say, I couldn't emphasize the term "free" in this situation. I got the BBQ chicken player which came with 2 sides and hush puppies. I opted for the fried okra and baked apples. The chicken wasn't bad, the barbecue sauce was a little too sweet for my tasting but overall it wasn't terrible. The okra was good, and not burnt nor over fries which was nice, and the baked apples were really good. I am fan of the hush puppy rings and this place just has the balls so it was okay to say the least.
Maybe I should have ordered more food or I ordered the wrong thing but I wasn't blown away from this place at all. It was a bit of a letdown to be honest. I would give it another chance though, as I heard their strawberry cobbler is killer. I just hate I couldn't give this place a better review on my first visit there.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 6, 2014Updated review
Either I caught them on an horrendously bad day, or there is some seriously mediocre food here, at best. I've eaten here several times before (but not recently), and at the other location on Samet Drive, and while I've never been blown away by the quality of the food, today's experience was surprising and disappointing.
The French Fries ($1.75) were simply awful, as overcooked as they were under-seasoned. The Hot Dog ($1.95) was no less unimpressive, with a weak, watery chili and a very ordinary wiener. The Foot Long Sausage ($3) lacked flavor, and the bun was completely over-toasted - leathery & dry - this is so totally overpriced, even if it were decent!
The most disappointing part, because it is a BBQ restaurant, were the 2 BBQ sandwiches. The Chopped BBQ Sandwich ($3.40) is really minced, not chopped, and the texture is more than a little off, and the BBQ is somewhat oversauced, resulting in an over-riding sweetness - meat should taste like meat, dessert should taste like dessert.
The Coarse Chopped Sandwich ($3.70) is really moderately chopped by most standards, and even the addition of the BBQ Slaw didn't help the overall taste of this sandwich. The wetness of the slaw and the over-saucing of the pork renders the bun a soggy mess, a real texture disaster - wet bread is more than a little creepy when there is filling involved.
Probably not going down this road again - sad, but true, this is simply bad 'Cue!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Oct 11, 2011Previous reviewThis is a three location chain in the Guilford County area that serves Lexington style chopped barbecue, sandwiches, and meat & 2 plates, with a variety of changing daily specials. They also serve breakfast. The menu is large and can offer something for everyone.
This location is in the relatively new cluster of establishments at the intersection of W. Wendover and Eastchester Drive. No evidence that they cook the pig here, probably done in High Point, and shipped in here, probably same is true for the Archdale location.
The pork barbecue is typically Lexington style, moderately chopped, and well sauced coming out of the kitchen. It is moist, tender, with no discernible smokiness, and with a slightly underlying sweetness found in almost all Lexington barbecue. They offer both a red barbecue slaw and a white cole slaw. This is middle of the road barbecue, not bad, just not great.
They have 2 commercial hot sauces on the table, one being Texas Pete, and they have a house made, vinegar based sauce with a little heat, not bad, not special.
The hush puppies are small with a nice crust and good flavor - I liked them. The Brunswick Stew, which is not a daily menu item, is only ok, there is an underlying taste that I don't care for.
We tried the Country Style Steak with Fried Okra and Pintos, and this was ordinary, as well. The steak was the composite type of "mystery meat" that you used to find in various school systems in the state. The gravy is the very dark brown kind that is prepared from a mix or base. Fried Okra was ok, pintos were canned, and not well seasoned.
All in all, not particularly impressive - I might grab a flyby sandwich on ocassion, but that would be about all. Country Barbecue, a block or so away, is a better choice for barbecue and other lunch items. Don't know about breakfast here, haven't tried it yet. - James S.Graham, NC6380544Oct 13, 2019
Breakfast is really where Carter Brothers shines. I have re-evaluated and re-evaluated breakfast in High Point, and I can tell you that Carter Brothers is #1 in breakfast. Yes, they are all that. The best biscuits hands down, soft buttery hot and fresh EVERY DAY!! A day with bad biscuits? Not here. Lots of options too, like the steak egg and cheese, which is likely one of the best you will ever have from any restaurant. Plates and side items are all available too.
The BBQ is not great. It's OK if you dont want to drive to Lexington. Most of the other food reminds me of cafeteria grade food. The fried chicken is good. Burgers are also OK. The menu is large with a lot of options. Just nothing that stands out to me.
Their service has always been up and down. Lately it has been fine, lets hope it stays that way. I have slammed this place in the past for grammatical errors on their signage, and really too much signage. I still think they have too many signs on this place. BUT, I also think they make the best breakfast around! So I'm cleaning up my review and giving them 4 stars.. really 5 for breakfast, and maybe 3 for anything else. Congratulations Carter Brothers. Number one in breakfast.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
