Lakeside Bakery

While hosting friends from Europe we wanted to treat them to classic Milwaukee hot ham and hard rolls for Sunday brunch.

When I was a kid we walked up to Schultz's Deli a half block from my grandparents' house. Schultz's is long gone and we were in a different neighborhood, so Lakeside Bakery seemed like the place to go. With 15 or more people in line before they opened it was obvious that we made the right choice.

The ham and rolls were just like I remembered from Schultz's in the 1950's. The ham was warm and tender. The rolls we crusty on the outside and soft on the inside with a perfect crumb.

Our friends were able to experience a traditional Milwaukee Sunday lunch, and we were able to remember our childhood.

Super delicious, fresh, hot ham and rolls! They also have an array of delicious danishes, donuts , cookies, and cakes. The staff is extremely friendly. We've been going here for over 30 years.

I have wanted to stop here and since it was a bookmark not far from where I had lunch off I went. The place is small with all kinds of bakery goodness but I noticed it's not like a Sendik's bakery with all the single cake slice varieties and very little cake slices to choose from. The have a lot of breads, cookies, sweets etc etc.

OMG OMG OMG

After all the years living in the Milwaukee area I have never found a real Muffuletta sandwich like the one I drive to Kenosha for and they have one, see my pictures. The Muffuletta sandwich is not bad at all with all the meats and cheese and it fills my crave for one but Tenutas in Kenosha is better but to save an 1.5 hour drive I will do this anytime. It's very similar bread wise which is what I love about a good muffuletta so now I know where to get a decent muffuletta when I want one.

I don't eat a lot of sweets regularly but I will get something if it's a good quality baked item, no twinkies or candy bars but something real so I opted for the cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was very average and good but not one of the over the top ones with a pound of frosting and fresh.

I'm definitely going back when the muffuletta crave hits and getting a sweet while I'm there.

This place was really disappointing. The danish had a canned filling flavor with that artificial sweetener aftertaste. The biscotti were soft enough to fall apart in coffee. The lady behind the counter couldn't tell me the flavors of anything. Considering what's available in this city, this is not worth the stop.

A great friend used to bring Dutch Crust rolls into work for a treat - and boy was it! Only needed fresh butter and a few spare moments to enjoy. Since then, Canfora sold and ownership changed to Krieg's but decided to pick up a 1/2 dozen Dutch Crust rolls, a couple specialty cookies and a peanut square, to try it out. I was thrilled to see the Dutch Crust rolls in the bin. Too bad the crust on 5 of the rolls were burned and the inside was not moist and fluffy but dry and stale; threw 4 of the rolls out. Cookies were pretty but so dry they crumbled and fell apart when a bite was taken, and the jelly center was like a tough gummy bear. Peanut square was good. Staff was friendly. Store was clean. The pizza to go slices were stored in the same case as the bakery - ugh. Will not be returning for another try.

Previously Canfora, a Bay View institution and home of the best hot ham & rolls in Milwaukee. Since it was acquired and renamed Lakeside, the quality has deteriorated so much. First and foremost a bakery, you would think that they would at least have fresh rolls and baked goods, but that's no longer the case. I miss fresh Dutchie rolls!

Service was fine but chocolate cake donut was as dry as a bone. Threw it out. The picture on their website shows these beautiful fruit tarts....the girl said they don't have those. Hmm. Don't go here.

The doughnuts were huge and look delightful, and they were actually pretty good, and their setup is pretty nice. Now, when it comes to the service and mind you, this was my 1st time coming, i wasn't greeted like their regular customers. In all honesty, the lady was rude & impatient. So for my rating, they would get 2 stars out of 5, the lady that was the cashier(dark hair)... Let's just put it like this. Maybe that day, she was having a bad day because she definitely wasn't welcoming by far...

My friend and I were walking close to Lakeside it was National Donut Day so we thought we would support them and buy a donut. Before we were waited on a man asked her if the coffee was fresh. She had a sarcastic reply. I ordered 2 donuts I was paying attention to what she was putting them in. She put them in a box and I asked if she could put them in a bag because I was walking. She very rudely told me I should have said something earlier and then proceeded to violently crush the box. Wow!! Idk if she was having a off day or if that was her normal customer service. The donuts were dry.

I have always loved this bakery location...Canfora was amazing and the new Owners and crew are doing a beautiful job continuing on the Tradition. The only hedge on giving it 5 stars??? They're not helping with my weight loss goals! Sheesh..too good!..jk...."All good/great/yummy things in Moderation" is key.
