The other reviews don't lie. The sushi at Cactus is wonderful and Chef Sam is lovely.
I stopped in by myself last Friday for lunch and ate at the counter. I had never been here before and I thought there would at least be a few tables. No, this place is absolutely tiny so it's basically 100% take out.
Cash only. I took away 1 star because cash only places irritate me. It's 2018 and I never ever have cash in my wallet.
What I ate: Marta Roll (obsessed) which is eel/avo inside and spicy tuna and scallion on top and Salmon Yaki roll which is a hot roll with California inside and cooked salmon on top with sauces. I'm usually not one for warm rolls but this was good, I would get it again.
Already itching to come back to try more items.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Robert R.Manhattan, New York, NY852May 26, 2023

Pretty authentic sushi spot. Owner is super friendly and spot on with the orders. My fiancé got the cactus roll which he enjoyed I got the salmon yaki roll but I think I will stick to raw sushi next time. I also got the Marta roll and that was very tasty. Miso soups was fresh. A little pricey for me personally. Just two of us we spend about $75, when I'm used to spending about $50 for the same amount of food. Would still recommend this place .

Food is good, BUT this guy thinks he is too good for the business he gets. He is ungrateful, unfriendly and very cheap. He doesn't deliver, nor uses delivery service like Uber eats, grub hub, or chow golfer as he doesn't want to pay them a share of his profits. He packs one small packet of soya sauce for each order of a roll with tidbits of ginger and a drop of wasabi. This is the height. I specifically said to pack extra and I had to go pick up, he insisted on cash only as he doesn't want to pay income taxes. Seriously there are other business that deserve our business. Ones that will go the extra mile for their customers.
This place is a joke. Thank god that it was edible. I believe in service as this is a service based business, he gets 2 stars from me only because of the food.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kei K.Dumont, NJ1288Oct 26, 2021
Fresh sushi always. Other sushi spots closer to me in Dumont are not on the same level with freshness. I used to order from places nearby but I got food poisoning every place I tried. My husband discovered Cactus Tenafly and it's so worth the drive. The owner and his wife are so friendly no matter how busy with orders they are. I pray this place is open and prosperous for many years to come.

I love this place! The owner is so friendly. I love how he sells freshly made juices and sushi! The roll I had was huge. I can't remember the exact name but it had spicy tuna on top and shrimp tempura inside. It was a struggle to finish but it was so good so I pushed through haha. I will definitely come back!!

Sam seems like a nice guy, and his fish is relatively fresh. But there something you need to know about his operation:
He only has three kinds of raw fish.
This came as quite a surprise to us, since there were many kinds of fish on the menus pictured here on Yelp, and even on the signs above his sushi bar!
It was a fairly unwelcome surprise, too, since we paid $57 for the Sushi "Royal", which came with 25 pieces of nigiri. So what did we receive?
5 Maguro/tuna
5 Sake/salmon
5 Hamachi/yellowtail
5 Unago (cooked)
5 Ebi (cooked)
That's right, only three kinds of raw fish. Sam kindly explained that he used to offer more selections, but the locals didn't really order them. So he stopped. Even ikura/salmon roe was a stretch, he said, though he still had some on hand.
Well, people of Bergen County, I have a job for you. Go to another sushi bar and try some different kinds of fish. The wonders of toothsome tako/octopus, springy kampachi/amberjack, unctuous uni/sea urchin, chewy ika/squid, melty ama-ebi/sweet shrimp, sweet hotate/scallop, delicate hirame/fluke, bracing tai/red seabream, and many other marine species await you.
Then, once you have an appetite for these delights, perhaps Sam will be able to stock them again. Until then, with best wishes to Sam, we'll go to a place with a more adventurous menu.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Emily B.Bergenfield, NJ10626Nov 21, 2018Updated review
Sam is the sweetest and the sushi is the best. The sushi is always so fresh! Keep in mind it's cash only

I think everyone forgets about this place because the name doesn't associate with its business. I highly recommend going here and giving it a try. The only down fall is that they do not accept credit cards.
