Very sweet and friendly staff. We came to try their Jian bing, but left most impressed by their beef noodles and dumplings. The Jain bing was fine, but not spectacular. The broth of the beef noodle soup is superb.
Would come again. Easy to recommend.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Feb 4, 2024Updated review
The prices have only slightly increased since my last visit, which remains relatively affordable compared to places that sell similar items. The restaurant was full when we arrived, and there was no indication of the approximate wait time for a table. I should've just left. The place is already small and becomes even more cramped with everyone standing by the door waiting for the next available table. I made the mistake of ordering on the screen for dine-in; they still prepared my food even when there was no place to sit or stand. We held our food by the door while waiting for the next available table.
The noodles didn't taste as good as I remember; they were rather mediocre. The Jianbing looked appealing but didn't live up to its appearance. Very bad dining experience. I'm unsure if I'll return again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 19, 2019Previous reviewParking can be difficult but the food is not bad. I tried their roasted beef noodle and I was hoping it wouldn't taste like the instant ramen by a brand named Master Kong. Fortunately, that wasn't the case.
The portion of the noodle was good and it had many things in it. According to the pics posted by others, some people got buk choy in their noodle and some got snow pea leaves. Snow pea leaf is more expensive than buk choy and I also much prefer the taste of snow pea leaf. They put snow pea leaves in my noodle and I was surprised and happy. The whole thing tasted good but I wish there was an option for a different type of noodle.
Since I was by myself, I was seated at the long table in the middle. I didn't feel very comfortable sitting there due to my height as I had to lower my head a lot to eat. Open kitchen is cool but I found it a bit too noisy since it was too close to me. The cashier was chatting with others while handling my credit card and charged me more money but I caught it. - Sam M.Portland, OR3144643Apr 22, 2024
Great food and super fast!! Menu isn't super big but has all of the classics, we tried their xiao long bao which was super hot and tasty, snow pea vegetable which was fragrant with garlic and spice, steamed buns which were great (it comes with 6 so we took some home and had them later which was great), and jian bing which were super flavorful. They only have coke, sprite, Fanta, a couple of beers, and tea available and we saw a few people bring their boba in to pair with their meal ^_^ can't wait to try their beef noodle soup, pot stickers, and youtiao!!

Love this place. Cheap and the meat falls off the bone! In my opinion, it's one of those places to go for a consistent and delicious meal

Service was mid. You order at the kiosk for dining out. You can grab a seat and scan the QR code if you're dining in. Service was fast. Food looked authentic.
I ordered the jianbing with beef and was disappointed that there was barely any beef... I paid extra for this. Overall size of the jianbing is generous but they skimp out on the beef!
Credit card accepted.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Nov 14, 2023
I've heard a lot about Master Kong and finally made a stop to try it. I tried their Jian Bing and their dumplings. What I find interesting everything you order is through scanning a QR code to load their order page. Then from there you select what you want to order, and can keep ordering until you're done eating then close the tab.
The jianbing was bigger than I anticipated (not pictured but there's two half's to the one half I took a picture of. I got a classic one which was good, had a crispy cracker, seasonings, cilantro, and some nuts. The boiled dumplings had no flavor when you ate it on its own. However when dipping it in the three sauces they give it tasted delicious.
Big portions for the price and it's affordable. Definitely a place that's great to grab some breakfast/brunch/lunch from.
There's not really parking but there's adequate street parking.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 19, 2023
Master Kong has received recognition in Portland for years now, and I finally made it in for lunch this week.
While the building isn't fancy or in a desirable area of town, the interior is clean. They've got table and bar seating. The kitchen is right there so you can watch and listen as your food is made.
I was dining solo but still wanted to try lots of things. I got four items - the jianbing, Chinese style pot stickers, steamed buns, and scallion pancakes. The server warned me this was a lot of food and he was right. The servings are generous for the price (most were $7-9). I was happy to have some to take home.
Service was actually great - though they were busy with takeout/delivery orders, my server took the time to share some info about each dish as he dropped it off. (For example, how to eat it, how it is prepared, special ingredients, secret recipe by his mom the chef, etc.) This elevated the experience and I really appreciated the time he took and the insight from these brief comments.
I really enjoyed most of what I ordered. Would absolutely get the jianbing again. Enjoyed the potstickers and scallion pancake. The steamed buns were not char siu bao - they had something like a pork meatball inside, I'd probably skip those. There were definitely other menu items I'd like to try in the future!Helpful 6Thanks 2Love this 6Oh no 1 - Oct 29, 2023
This place was amazing. The host/waiter/server was super friendly and energetic and it was clear that he was single handedly setting the energy of the whole place. He was very helpful and joking constantly. We got to see some regulars pop in and it was cool to see the rapport that he had built with them.
We ordered the Won Ton Noodle Soup, the Brisket Beef Noodle Soup, and the potstickers. Each of these was filled with flavor (we normally share at least a taste of our dishes, but not today!) and totally hit the spot on a cold night.
We'll definitely be back again!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 2 - May 24, 202312 check-ins
This five stars review is an ode to Master Kong congee/porridge at this original Division and 82nd Ave location!
Calling All Congee/Porridge Lovers! This is your place: hearty, satisfying, homemade texture, steaming hot until your last spoon, and available all day, even day! The bonus item that makes this an epic spot for congee/porridge is the Fried Dough stick (giò cháo quẩy).
You have several proteins to choose from, and the congee/porridge base stays the same with a few fresh thin ginger sticks and a light garnish of chopped scallions. I had all the proteins on the menu; my favorite is still the fish. They don't have the Chao Lòng (Vietnamese congee/porridge style with pig intestines, liver, heart, gizzards, and sausage).
I am a regular here. I come here at least once a month during spring/summer, and twice or once a week during the rest of Oregon's lovely weather. The Division location has mastered the art of congee/porridge: taste and texture! I can't say the same for their recently opened, Hawthorne location.
Their meat holder with pork is good, made fresh to order, so it's crunchy and full filling. The green onion pancake is on the chewy side, so not my preference. I like the braised egg on their beef brisket and rice dish, but it's a bit sweet seasoning-wise for me. The snow Pea Leafs is mostly overcooked and does not have much flavor. Their dumplings also make fresh to order with only pork, steamed or fried. I'm not much of a dumplings fan, but if you want fresh pork dumplings, then by all means, check out Master Kong.
Besides being addicted to their fish congee/porridge, and fried dough, I love their chilies oil because they seasoned the chilies with whole soybean, garlic, and who knows what else, but oh my goddess, it's so darn delicious for chilies oil, it is the best I have!
You can order via barcode on your mobile, stand-alone portal, or old fashion pen and paper like dim sum style.
Small crew with quick service, all food made fresh to order in ready-to-go containers, so not much table serving, and more of self-serve style. They offer free hot tea for dining in.Helpful 2Thanks 2Love this 2Oh no 0
