I'm setting up a "blind date" between two friends and it looks like i'm responsible for choosing the venue as well. It has to be in Manhattan. I'm thinking somewhere that isn't super loud (like Tao) but seem big enough that they won't feel as if the person next to them will hear their conversation, since they both feel nervous about the whole thing. Price isn't an issue. Any suggestions? Somewhere in midtown would be great too! At this point it's all about th atmosphere so I don't think the food will matter much.

Im surprised people still do dinner or lunch dates; usually I end up going for coffee and seeing where that goes. For midtown lunch you can try Cafe Zaiya or the Bryant Park Grill since it is still there and they could walk around the fair for a little bit. Of course there is also K-Town and there are abundant restaurants there. My favorite being Madangsui which sometimes has a line.

Highly recommend Bar Americain for central location, amazing food, nice ambiance (spread out, but not too loud). Good luck to your friends!

The Tangled Vine or Tolani Wine Restaurant are two Upper West Side spots that would be a good fit for a blind date. Tolani is more dimly lit, if either person is super ugly.

Sorry, it's not in midtown, but what about The Beourgeois Pig or Death & Co (both in E. Village? (Granted on first glance the names of these 2 establishments might not sound exactly date-worthy). Both spots have amazingly romantic ambiance and the offerings (drinks and food) are so unique might make for great conversation. :)
