I'm a simple guy - Animal style from In n Out (extra grilled onions, light sauce) does it for me.

If culture is involved, then I prefer The Counter to Umami.

Admittedly limited sample size - ground meat and I meet maybe once every couple years if that anymore.

Now, calamari sliders from the Bluewater Grill are another story entirely.  Paired with a proper IPA, those are tough to beat as happy hour fare is concerned.

  2. No joke, I just had an amazing burger... Five Guys Burgers.  There's one in LBC.  Oh my goodness, it was heaven.  No frozen patties here, no extra charges for toppings, just lots of fresh ingredients.  Seriously. It rocks.

You really need to break the burgers down into about 3 separate categories to compare them. Otherwise it's like comparing apples with oranges. I like the burgers from Tommy's and In-N-Out, both of which cost less than $2. I also like the upscale burgers served at Morton's and Houston's which are $15+. But judging the first 2 against the second 2 would make no sense.

  11. Agree Sam.  Even Tommy's and In&Out are in separate categories.  We've tried it before here but it never sticks.  People like to compare In&Out against all others.

I've had maybe like 2 actual beef burgers in the last 12 years, so I don't really know.

BUT, I can say I'm not a fan of turkey burgers. I had one from Hole in the Wall in West Hollywood recently and I thought all the herbs they put it in are weird and it was dry. Same for BLD. All the herbs they put in the turkey burger make it taste a bit too aromatic and strange...

I like veggie burgers best. Although I'm curious to try the Umami Burger.

    if you want to discuss the categorization of burgers, here's an interesting resource;
    aht.seriouseats.com/arch…

personally I think the 'apples to oranges' argument is moot.
food is food, there is no necc correlation between the $$$ spent and how much you enjoy it,

I do think there's a difference between closed minded eaters and those who are more adventurous.
(you can usually tell by the types of places a person reviews, no mystery in that at all really)
I don't take close minded folks and cheapskates seriously on any advice.

follow the advice of reviews/bloggers/etc you trust & don't get stuck to routines.

I've lived in norcal for about 5 years (2 in sf, 3 in east bay), honestly most places aren't as awful as ppl make it out to be.
geographically it's a part of CA, but the culture is so different it might as well be it's own country, or thats my opinion at least.

most of the less than positive controversy comes out of oakland.
i would live in fresno before oakland, really not my favorite place.

  14. Hella, totally, y'all, whatever! Say what you want :)

idk there are classy and not so classy neighborhoods everywhere.
    there's really no utopia anywhere.

SF is tough if you're not making bank, plenty of depressing places, including where i lived in the fremont area.
Concord / pleasant hill in the east bay was a real shit-hole, imho.
I'd like to move to portland or ny, but realistically I doubt my life will change that much (speaking for myself).

if you have a decent job and friends I think that makes a difference anywhere.

    • 696 friends
    • 350 reviews

I really loved SF too before I lived there & I still love to visit.
(so much to do, incl places to eat)

but, to live there, well, it's completely different.
by all means I hope you get the chance to live there someday and decide for yourself.
(some folks really are a good fit for certain cities, it's just a matter of compatibility imo)

what does seem interesting is I seldom meet anyone who loves both LA & SF after they've lived in both cities.

uh, no that's burger's pretty awful to put it diplomatically.
only thing edible at farmer boys are the fish n chips, fried zucchini, and shakes.
even among their menu it's one of their weaker dishes.

still, I'd say give it a shot & decide for yourself.
it costs next to nothing, so why not?
