When backing out of a parking stall do you need to put your blinker on

No. I wasn't marked off for it. I took mine on Monday. However, you must signal when you're entering the stall.

I didn't but that was so long ago. Don't know how they are now. When I took my test, the instructor told me "if you don't hit a tree or car you pass"! When I   paralleled park he told me "Merry Christmas you passed"

(former DMV tester -- please don't kill, I retired 6 years ago) but the answer is yes.  Whether or not you are marked off depends on the whim of the tester. You also need to signal when approaching a stall.  If you are parallel parking, signal about 2 car lengths before you stop the car to reverse, not after your stop.

Wayne C. Good to know, thanks for sharing.

I don't remember reading that in the drivers test manual or in driver's ed classes, so how do we know what guidelines we should follow?

@SD The drivers treat manual has only general fiddles

Damn auto correct! ! Test manuals have only general guidelines but this should be taught in drivers ed.  You need to signal before stopping. .always.  If you dont signal you are creating a hazard.   Also if you don't signal,  the car behind you might stop to close to you and prevent you from parking.  And at the very least there is nothing wrong with signaling two car lenghts before you stop, so why not do it?  I hope this helps.

    @ Wayne. Sorry I misunderstood KK's question.

I thought she meant when leaving a parking stall in reverse.  I don't recall having to signal leaving a parking stall, I do remember signalling to indicate where you are going to park. But then again...  That was over 25 years ago learned it from the state / city & county at my high school.

It does make sense to signal the direction to back out. That way the person waiting for the stall can give courtesy space to get out of the parking.

I'll signal as I leave from now on. It's a new good habit.
