The original church was severly damaged in the great fire of 1842 and rebuilt under the guidance of a British architect. 101 years later, Operation Gommerah burnt the beautiful church down again. It has been kept as a war memorial and it is one of the 'must see' places in Hamburg. A lift takes visitors up to the top of the tower giving an amazing view over the whole city, while the old crypt has been turned into a small museum."
