Athena’s 4-star review:
Hakata Ton Ton is cute, eccentric and busy. I have been here twice in a week so you know how much I love their food! There are definitely some highlights of my meals here. I got their Hakata hot pot tasing menu both times. We got 3 orders for 4 people but that is plenty of food already. We didn't bother ordering anything else extra.
1) Sashimi appetizers: The thinly sliced sashimi is drenched in this sesame vinegar sauce and it is absolutely delicious. I can very possibly eat the whole plate myself.
2) Pig Salad: Or whatever they called in on the menu was very very good. There were a ton of those shredded pork on top of greens in a homemade sauce with caviar. IT was absolutely delicious and again, I would love to consume the whole plate myself.
3)Japanese fried Chicken: The chicken are crispy and not greasy at all. They use chicken thigh I think so it is pretty juicy and tender. Love it!
4) The hot pot took a while to cook. We picked the hakata one and in Japanese it says it improves your skin health because it contains a lot of collagen, aka, pig skin. But do not fear. It is very delicious. It has a ton of Chinese chives, cabbage, some pork belly, dumplings and yummy broth. The set menu also comes with either bibimbop or ramen noodles. I have tried both and they are both good depending on what you prefer.
We ended our meal with their strawberry ice cream and Japanese black sugar mochi. They are to die for. You can taste the strawberry and the sweet black sugar in the mochi!
Well, there are some downsides to the restaurant. The service, when you do get it, is great. Yet, unfortunately, it is a little scattered. You don't and won't get much attention as you would like to. The restaurant is also on the small side so if you didn't make a reservation, you would probably wait for an hour and more. One last thing to add is that the waiters/waitress are too nice to discourage outrageous customer behaviors. Last time I was there, there was a big table of LOUD customers. But the restaurant did nothing to deter them so I had to hear their crappy conversation during the whole meal.
I will be back!
