Eddie’s 3-star review:
Looking for new digs, I visited Belmont Shores. With recommendations from a many co-workers that live in that neighborhood, this restaurant was the place to check out for some eats.
There are two locations a few shops down from one another on 2nd street. The first and original location was very crowded, busy and had a wait. The second location not so much. Not feeling like waiting, I went with the second location. Small and dimly lit, I felt this was a place trying to overextend it's causal vibe.
The hostess was slightly confused about seating people, having to take a small tongue lashing by either the manager or the owner (he did not have a smile on his face the entire dinner).
My date had ordered the "chicken tawook," having seen that as a suggestion from previous yelpers and I ordered the "Open Sesame combo." With the entrees you have a choice of "hummus, spicy hummus, or the baba ganoush" and salad, "open sesame, tabouleh, fattoush." Baba ganoush and tabouleh for me, spicy hummus and fattoush for her. The plates came out filled with food (see pictures). The "chicken tawook" had a smoky and mild flavor, tender and juicy. I can see why it seems to be the favorite, though I would prefer a little more pizzazz. Along with the chicken the combo came with beef skewers and "kafta." Beef skewers were ok, charred and beefy taste. "Kafta" on the other hand had a heavy dose of parsley and slight gamey taste. Baba ganoush had a very smoky flavor which was nice. Spicy hummus tasted exactly as it sounded. The tabouleh was nice, with fresh parsley and mint, it was refreshing in contrast to the smokiness and charred tastes from the meat. Though I think the salad could have used a bit more acid.
I felt that this restaurant may be a little over-hyped. Having come from a school that had a plethora of Mediterranean joints serving similar fare, I have to say honestly that I've had better and for much cheaper. Also they could use bigger plates or separate plates, the smaller plate gives the illusion of more food. Unnecessary.
A bit overrated. Food was decent, but not sure if I would really come back. There are a few other Mediterranean spots on 2nd street that I will have to check out, before I would return.
