Established in 2017. As a child, Chef Rhonda was coaxed into the kitchen by Grandma Lillie Mae Gaulden -and her Mother, Peggy Gaulden- who left their doors open to the town for all to come get a home cooked meal. They served food that were garunteed to touch your soul and everyone who came knew it. Lillie Mae and Mom would frequently call to Rhonda to grab ingredients from the pantry or fridge- this was their way of saying that class was in session! Rhonda's obedience and close attention to each of Granny and Mom's ingredients, left her inspired. She went on to graduate from Culinary School, opening a catering kitchen, and in year 2001, opening her first restaurant! In 2006, Chef Rhonda took some time off to raise her new Son, Major, but in 2010, she returned to her loyal customers -with the opening of Lillie Mae's House of Soul Food- and provided that food that they had been longing for! ..Food that is Soooul Good! I am so upset that I have to write this kind of review and know it's not out of anger more of a concern. I have been eyeing this place for a while and finally went for an early dinner. As I pull up I notice we are the only customers. I figured because maybe have a drive thru people just drive up, pick up their order, and go. We saw a guy outside grilling meat and made the area smell deliciously fragrant. Since it was our first time we wanted to check it out. Walking in the restaurant didn't seem so welcoming a little outdated in my opinion for it to be fairly new. Once we got in we were greeted with a smile from the lady taking our order she was super friendly and answered all my questions. We ordered two plate combos: one with ribs and fried chicken and the other with links and beef brisket. We took the food to go and once we got home couldn't wait to dig in.
We tried the fried chicken and immediately noticed a smell. To explain it was like the chicken went bad from sitting around too long. We did a double check just to make sure and had to discard the chicken because the smell was so unsettling. Eating the rest of the food at that point was a bit scary. The other food seem to be OK but I just wasn't wowed by anything. Links were super greasy, beef brisket was more of meat shreds then slices of beef. It breaksy heart to leave this review because I can see the potential and I can tell these people are trying. I wish them the best and hope they really double-check the food before using it for customers.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sheila B.Tracy, CA5179217Apr 2, 2017
Sunday afternoon wanted some BBQ. Not sure of the hours so I CALLED to ask what time they closed.
Who ever answered the phone said 6 pm today. It's 535 it's only 10 minutes away from me so I decided to drive over and check it out.
I got there 546 and the door were locked. Some of the lights are out there are people inside but again doors are locked I knocked but nothing
So THANKS for NOTHING about making me drive 20 minutes out of my way. And for sending me to Famous Daves for great service and Amazing food!Helpful 12Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Vika K.San Bruno, CA1189Apr 13, 2017
Maybe they had an off day. Saw they had drive through so I opted for that. I should've went in, it may have been faster.
Ordered chicken and waffles, chicken mac, cornbread and peach cobbler. It was ok. I wouldn't go there again. Peach cobbler was cold and soggy. They kind of just threw it in a small container it didn't look appetizing. It tasted strange. The fried chicken tasted tough, although it had good flavor, it was a bit chewy for my liking. The cornbread was soft and was ok. The waffle was pretty tough and looked almost burnt. Their speaker box wasn't working and nice young man tried his best, by coming out and taking our order. The Mac n cheese was not very flavorful and cold in some parts. Overall two stars for the effort of the young man taking our order.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 11, 2017
This place definitely isn't intended to be a drive-thru establishment, but because I am on crutches, it's the route I took. I didn't entirely mind the wait though because soul food is not intended to be "fast food"... Cook it up with love and make my taste buds happy, and we are good to go... though there is some work to do in terms of wait time... It took about 30-35mins from the time I got into the drive-thru (w/1 car ahead of me) to the time I got my food.
But ooowee... I could smell the grape and sugar the instant I popped the straw in my kool-aid
I ordered the ribs and brisket w/mac, greens, hush puppies and cornbread... (mac and cornbread as extra sides)...
The brisket had a nice smoked flavor but I wish I had some sauce to slather on it. The ribs were the closest thing to "off the bone" that I've had out here. Greens were smackin, cornbread was good with added butter and some good ol' Louisiana hot sauce... Mac was nice n cheesy but I can't place my finger on what's missing. Oh and the hush puppies I wish I had some sauce for too, but every bit I ordered I'd go for again... because there will be a next time... and we will do it dine in style this time.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Feb 23, 2017
Reviews are opinions, so take this Carolina Kid's review for what it's worth.
I ordered the 1/4 Smoked BBQ Chicken, Boomin' Baked Beans and Hushpuppies washed down with some Ghetto Grape Kool-aid. Dine-in
When it arrived I knew it was too saucy for me.
The baked beans were ok. Too sweet for my taste buds. It had some ground meat in it as well. I ate the hushpuppies to cut the sweetness of the beans.
The cornmeal hushpuppies look like they contain onions and corn. Tastes a little like corn dog breading.
The chicken was excellent! I'll probably ask for less or no sauce the next time I order it. It was smoked well, you could taste the smoky-ness.
I'll be back to taste something else.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Juan H.Tracy, CA108189Apr 4, 2017
Everything was really really good!
Basically bought a sampler...one of a number of things.
The greens, mac n cheese, BBQ chicken, fried chicken, corn bread & Ghetto Grape Kool-Aid is awesome!!!
Finally, some good soul food locally!!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Natasha W.Chicago, IL072Apr 15, 2017
I arrived at 11:45 and there was a sign on the door that they would open at noon. I am chalking it up to opening kinks.
I ordered the ribs and links combo for 13.95 with yams and corn bread to go. I waited about ten minutes and was on my way.
The ribs were smoked pretty well and were tender but the sauce was pretty runny and didn't stay very well. They tasted pretty good. The links were spicy which I liked. The yams were overly sweet but not mushy. The cornbread was sweet and a good complement for the spice.
Overall, it was pretty good though I wouldn't go out of the way to come back.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - James A.Tracy, CA482372Mar 23, 2017
I'm sorry, I hate to post bad reviews but this place is going to hurt somebody.
First, the tables, floors and walls are disgusting and dirty. I would hate to see what the kitchen actually looks like.
Second, the potato salad was awful, it tasted like something spoiled in their sauce mixture for it and had fermented. Very strong fizzy taste and bad after taste. The ribs were amateur, not smoked correctly and the BBQ sauce was very generic. The best thing was the fried chicken wings, they were crispy and hot whole wings but very dreadfully under seasoned. Corn bread was decent, nothing special.
I was excited to try a new restaurant that tracy desperately needs but if the health department doesn't close this place down the lack of culinary flare and knowledge will. Sorry folks, this place won't be around long.Helpful 11Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lakeshia J.Modesto, CA2517539Jul 8, 2017
Went to this place a few weeks ago. The food was great and only took 15-20 minutes (freshly made). I got catfish and chicken with cornbread (with real corn) and fries.
I have no complaints other than my second order which if to with hush puppies instead of cornbread cake with only 3 hush puppies...yeah kind of a hip if you ask me but not big enough of a deal to take a star off.
The people were currently nice as well. I think if they remodeled or just repainted and added and more decorative sign they'd have a little more business. Otherwise great job!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stephanie S.Willits, CA20851545Jan 23, 2017First to Review
So happy to see this place open up in Tracy! It is located in the old KFC, then 5 star burger joint on 11th in downtown Tracy. I had watched it slowly transform over the past few months and was anxiously awaiting the opening.
Last week, I stopped for lunch and ordered the catfish and wings plate. The catfish was perfect. They use big fat fillets, with traditional cornmeal crust -- it was tender and fantastic.
The wings were also big and meaty and had a nice crunch to them. They come with hushpuppies or fries - if you like hushpuppies, you really need to try theirs. They are DELICIOUS!! I think those were the best hushpuppies I've ever had. Hushpuppies are rounds of cornbread, with a little onion in them, that have been thrown into the fryer. It was said that they originated when once upon a time, hunters were out camping and their dogs were howling up a storm to get some food from the campfire. They hunters made up these to toss to their dogs to hush them up. Now, you just know I would love that story, don't you?
In all, it was a great meal, except it was a tad pricey at $14.00. It was supposed to come with a drink, but they did not offer anything that was sugar free, not even tea or water, so I could not get anything. I did love that they offered sweet tea and grape Kool Aid, for those of you who like that stuff. They had also run out of hot sauce, but I brought my food home and you know I have plenty of Texas Pete's at home, so I was ok. I also ordered a side of coleslaw which was just a tiny speck of cole slaw. For the price, I think the side needs to be bigger.
The service was great. The wait was not too long and everyone was super friendly, although the place was really crowded at lunchtime and I do not think they had expected so many people to find them so quick. They had run out of a few things, but I think I think they are doing really really well for being open such a short amount of time. Googling this place, it looks like it is a small chain - as the menu in Santa Clara seems to be exactly the same, with the same prices.
Definitely try this place!! The food is great!Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0
