I'm home!
No really though, as another cali transplant, i too have been on the journey for good cali mex in nyc. I had all but given up, and then, out a fit of starvation before going into the city, stumbled into Zocalo.
YAAAAAY!
The enchiladas I had were great. The shredded chicken was flavorful, and the red sauce was right on target. Finally mexican rice without peas and carrots in it, and good black beans! My sweetie had tacos which were nicely presented, and delicious. Their salsa was great as well, and even my VERY picky daughter found no fault with the special for her nachoes (cheese and lots of black beans on the chips)
The place is very clean, nicely decorated, and not busy. The staff is very very friendly and attentive. This is also a great value. For our entrees and beers, we got out for only $24. They have a full bar downstairs and nice dining room upstairs.
This is by far one of my favorite places in williamsburg. It's off the beaten path, but still very convenient.
A few of my roommates and I are from California. Needless to say; I have been VERY disappointed by the lack of decent Mexican food in New York.
Every time I've gone back to Cali; I've pleaded, begged, and bribed some of my former local restaurants to move out to NYC. They could make a killing as the best Mexican food in NYC
Let's just say that the first Mexican restaurant I went to was less than satisfying. My beef enchilada consisted of ground beef, in tomato sauce, wrapped in a tortilla. Bleh!!! (I need to stop thinking about it; I'm starting to gag). I thought, maybe it was just that place...
I have stuffed my face with burritos, tacos, tortas, etc... every time I've been back to Cali; not knowing the next time I would get quality Mexican food.
A few days back, Zocalo left a menu on my front steps... I was terrified
BUT, the menu looked distinctly Mexican; and even had a few items I hadn't seen at any other "Mexican" restaurants in NYC.
I went for it.
Fear set in.
What was I thinking?
Is it even going to be edible?
Is it going to kill me?
It arrived. I curiously opened the package to see what mess I got myself into this time... WAIT! There's sliced limes... AND RADISHES in with my tacos. This is a great sign! I tore through the tacos with the excitement of a virgin on prom night. Next, I opened my burrito. It was BIG, like something in my dreams.
AND it tasted good.
I give 5 stars. Had this been a restaurant in Cali; it might have received less... but this is definitely the best NYC has to offer.
I am now fat and happy.
Delicious, cheap Mexican food right in my neighborhood. It's right under the JMZ Marcy Avenue stop, and you wouldn't really notice it unless you're looking for it. The staff are all really friendly, and you get huge flavorful burritos for $6! The carnitas and chicken burritos are by far my favorite. Nothing is over $10 and you get huge portions of everything.
---edit----
They were closed for a while due to renovations, but they are back open and even better! The place lost that "small little place in Mexico" feel but the food is still amazing. They now serve alcohol at the small little bar on the first floor (which is for take outs/alcohol) and an upstairs for seating area!
They also now take credit cards, which makes getting my fix even easier. The carnitas is so damn good. Seriously stop by here if you're ever on the JMZ.

This place is amazing, its nested right under the J/M train, its a hard find. But well worth the search. For 6 bucks you can get a huge plate of Quesadillas with the freshest rice n beans. The place itself is on the narrow side, but pretty, its painted bright orange with paintings all over. The staff is very friendly and quick! The food is filling and fresh! I heart this place!

This place opened a few months ago and it is a welcome addition to the area. The food is authentic and filling. Last night I had the 'Pechuga a la Mexicana', which was just the right amount of spicy. There were two large pieces of chicken smothered in a tasty tomato-based sauce, with peppers, onions and jalapenos to spare. And as if this wasn't enough (which it definitely was) it is served with rice and beans as well as tortillas on the side. In the past I've had the tacos, fajitas, and burrito, all of which were excellent.
This is a fabulous little place that you should make it your business to visit.
