Some friends and I recently had dinner at York Street Cafe and had a great experience! For sure the highlight of our experience was our server, Bobby! He was fantastic! He gave us the history of the building and even took us on a little tour to see all the fun historical items and upstairs event space/bar.
The atmosphere was also so fun! You can truly feel the history while you're inside - you just have to go to see for yourself!
The food was very good - the Cesaer Salad with side of anchovies was amazing as was the cake we all shared!! We all really enjoyed our steaks as well. I will say that the price point is higher than I was expecting. The food was all tasty but I'm not sure the steak was of the same quality or preparation as you'd get at one of the upscale steakhouses in the city. Overall though our experience was fantastic and I think we all would say we'd be back!
And we'll definitely be asking for Bobby when we go!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 28, 2024
Finally had the opportunity to experience this establishment for myself with friends. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the expectations that I was expecting.
We arrived a few minutes early and went up the stairs to the second floor bar. We met Brandon the bartender who made great old fashioned bourbon drinks. He self-admitted that he didn't know anything about wine and was not certain about what was in stock. That wasn't very reassuring. I went ahead and got a glass of Rose because that was the one bottle of wine he did find. Before our drinks were ready we were being summoned for our table. We requested that we get our drinks before heading back downstairs but we felt very rushed.
We entered a crowded and loud dining room on the first floor with our drinks in hand. I am grateful that they did add the drinks to our meal tab downstairs. Meaning we didn't have to quickly check out upstairs.
Cheryl greeted us and shared the background about the restaurant and the building that was built in the 1880s. It was very interesting, is haunted and she has worked there for 12 years. Both under the current ownership and the previous owners. She was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the menu And gave input and suggestions on what to order.
We were with friends and our friend started the evening with the Greek appetizer, and I ordered the bread basket that I had read a lot about. Both of these items came quickly and were very good. It would've been nice if the small cups one containing butter and the other, I'm not exactly sure what it was had been explained to us. We believe it was goat cheese but it was never shared with us. My friend loved his appetizer and we liked the bread basket. Both were generous portions.
The unfortunate part was that it took an hour 15 minutes to an hour and a half after the appetizers were taken away before we received our meal. Our friends enjoyed their meals. He got the ribeye which was cooked well and a generous portion. She got the catch of the day which was swordfish and served with a cilantro rice side. They both said it was very good.
My plus one got the lamb which was overcooked and dry. It looked like it sat under a heating lamp for way too long because the cilantro rice base it was sitting on had congealed. He said it didn't even taste like lamb and he was very disappointed especially after reading positive reviews about the food.
I was served a very small portion of the vegetable Raju which I was told was their vegan dish. It was served on grit cakes that were wet, very thin and didn't hold up. The ragu was topped with Parmesan cheese which definitely made it not vegan. Plus, it too had spent a long time under the heat lamp because it was very dried out. I really was surprised at how small the serving was and how unimaginable it was too. I would not order it again. I was disappointed in my meal.
We ended the meal with their blackberry lemon cake, According to our friends and my plus one it was delicious and their cakes are made by a local woman who has been making them for 20 years.
Nothing was offered to us and the front of the house manager after an hour of waiting did come out and apologize for the delay. She did ask us if we needed anything but nothing was really offered.
After our meals finally arrived no one asked us about the quality of the food. Which was a shame and I would have thought standard especially after the long delay.
Earlier in the afternoon I received a call from the new owner confirming our attendance at dinner and asking if there was anything that they needed to be aware of regarding celebration. I don't think a restaurant owner has ever called me before and it made me even more excited to dine at this restaurant. I appreciated the outreach. During the call I reminded the proprietor that I had noted I was vegan when I made the reservation and I was assured that my dietary restrictions would be accommodated. Unfortunately, that was not my experience and I made certain that our server knew.
I hope the owners read this review. I'm happy to discuss my experience with them. I'm not certain that we would ever return.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Raymond S.KY, KY1254Apr 5, 2024
Lovely dinner. We haven't been here in years and decided to go for our anniversary. We were greeted by the owner when we arrived.i had the filet mignon topped with lobster claw meat and my wife had the chicken dinner, both were delicious. Our waiter Bobby took extremely good care of us. We will not wait so long before returning.

I have never walked out of a restaurant in the middle of a meal in my life but tonight my husband and I had to after waiting 1 hour and 20 mins for our food after ordering it. No attempt to apologize or make it right was made and we still were expected to pay. This was our first time at York Street and we will not be returning.

This is such a eccentric place. The decor is a menagerie of antiques and all sorts of things.
The food is very good but a little overpriced for me and the serving sizes. I had a fantastic Cobb salad and my hubby had the chicken with Cajun flavors. The bread basket costs 9 dollars. How about just complimentary.
The dessert menu is filled with cake all kinds. Opera cream strawberry and butter rum just to name a fewHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Oct 7, 2023
Friends invited us to join them for dinner and although we already had reservations elsewhere, we stopped for an appetizer. We are so glad we did. We will be back for dinner and soon! Everyone had a little something different and everyone loved it! New York strip, housemade veggie burger, tomato basil soup, our spanakopita appetizer, strawberry buttermilk cake, key lime and peanut butter pie- all of it made in a scratch kitchen that's been turning out quality dishes since I first tried it in the 1980s. The service makes it extra special. Trinity and Phoenix were knowledgeable, friendly, professional and clearly like their jobs. I'm making a reservation for our return now, and I'll be sure to get pictures this time.

As a Christmas gift to our aunt and uncle, we took them to York Street last night. It was a memorable and delicious meal. Our server was attentive and had recommendations for each course. The upholstered chairs throughout the dining room could use a good cleaning or recovering to match the price point of the food. Otherwise, exactly what we hoped for from a reservation at an old favorite under new management.

The ambiance was very charming but the food was VERY heavy and just ok. We all ordered steaks (on strip, two filet). We spent as much as we would at some pretty high end steak restaurants but the food and service did not compare. Our waitress was very nice but inexperienced and awkward. The highly touted homemade desserts were just ok and I would probably opt out next time.

We had a reservation and our table was ready promptly. When we sat down the table lamp stopped working. It was dark, I could not see the menu. The server said we can use a flashlight. Seriously, this was what they said. He messed with the light for like 5 minutes, then told me that this light has been a problem for awhile. That's a problem right there. So, this is an ongoing problem and it has not been resolved. Ok, I'm out of here I told the server. We left. I will not attempt to eat here in the future.
