This was a pretty awesome Yelp event! Even though there wasn't "official" Yelp representation for most of the visit, one of the Halo owners (Polly?) did an excellent job of keeping us fat, happy and entertained.
This was my first brush with Halo Burger. I've heard of them, but I live a sheltered Downriver life, so I never tried them. I absolutely loved their burger... it's a little like Culver's "Butter Burger" but with better beef. It was so tasty. I really enjoyed their tater tots (and just the fact that Halo Burger has them. Why don't more places have tots?!) and their fries. The onion rings had a great crunch but not enough flavor/seasoning.
My husband and I got to meet tons of great Yelpers and re-meet others as well. I love any event where I'm fed and entertained, and this really fit the bill. Dearborn to Novi is a bit of a drive, so I'm not sure I'll make it back out to Halo any time soon, but I really do hope they'll build a location closer to my hood.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 20, 2014
I finally got to try Halo Burger! They really made a good impression on me last night, and I have to say, I really liked what I saw and ate. Regardless of the rain, we ALL had a great time!
Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by the owner, which I thought was real neat. There was also a chalk board with "welcome Yelpers" on it in the entryway. When walking in, I saw Ron C, and finally got to meet him! YAY!
The food here is fast casual, but don't let that fool you. Great menu with loads of selection. We started off eating a trifecta tray of Onion rings, French fries and my personal favorites, TATER TOTS! They also had a few dips, one of which was called halo-pinyo dip. (their version of jalapeno dip. cute! I love it!) Dips were delicious, and not to spicy.
The next round was the burgers. First was I think the deluxe burgers, with lettuce onion and tomato. We also tried the olive burger which I passed on. We also tried the chicken burger, which surprisingly, I LOVED. We also tried the boston cooler which is their signature drink, and let me tell you, it was awesome. between the tater tots and the Boston cooler, that's going to get me to go back in a heartbeat.
The company was great, and I got to meet some new yelpers when I was here along with seeing a few faces that are familiar as well! Will gladly return to eat at Halo again, but probably the one closer to my home in Troy. THANK YOU HALO BURGER.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jenny K.Detroit, MI4212572439Aug 23, 2014
I was excited to get to try Halo Burger this time around because I was wait listed for the first one in Troy.
Without further adieu, I really love this place! It was nice and clean, open and colorful. I walked in and was greeted by the owner, Polly. She was very welcoming and handed me a raffle ticket, a paper with fun facts about the restaurant, and some coupons for future visits. She also gave me a cup for any soft drink and offered a table to try some samples.
I sat down and waited for my husband to get there; the rain storm was horrible as well as the traffic! Within a few minutes, a red tray of fries, onion rings, and tater tots was put on the table. They were fresh out of the fryer and delicious. My favorites were the tater tots because they're a nostalgic food item and aren't typically available on burger joint menus. I tried several samples of their burgers...they just kept coming!
The samples that went around were for the Turkey Burger, Spicy Chicken Sandwich, Crispy Chicken Sandwich, QP Burger with cheese, Beefy Double Cheese, Supreme Burger with cheese, as well as their limited time only Mushroom and Swiss burger. They also sampled some of the Premium Burgers on the menu; they had the Halopeno Burger, BLT Cheddar, and their famous Olive Burger. There is no way I sampled each one, but from what I did sample, they all had their own distinct flavor and tasted fresh. My favorites were the Supreme, Halopeno, and Mushroom and Swiss. I also enjoyed trying the samples of their famous Boston Cooler!
Polly asked some "fun facts" questions and handed out prizes; I got a frisbee and bag with the Halo Burger logo on them. Overall, I had a great time at the event and was happy to finally try the place out. I will definitely be back! Thanks to Annette and the Detroit team for throwing another great event!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Richard F.Bloomfield Hills, MI9053310Aug 23, 2014
Well, I hate to pour cold water on a burning fire, but I can't rate Halo burger very high based on the food. And I can't rate a place based on whether they picked up the check either. The people that run the place are terrific and went out of their way to please our Yelp group, and the service was great too. But the Halo burgers? I was underwhelmed. I am not a particular fan of fast food in the first place, but speed aside, fast food can and should be good food. This food just wasn't great.
I had my first Halo Burger experience over ten years ago at the location in Flint on Pierson. I liked it then. But I don't get to Flint very often so I haven't been back. I did notice that Halo Burgers was here in Oakland County, but I hadn't re-experienced Halo Burgers for a long time before this Yelp event. And I suspect that if the food and the ambience had remained exactly the same as it was a decade ago, I would probably still like Halo burgers. But let me describe what they are (now) and you can judge for yourself whether this is the kind of burger you would like.
First of all, Halo was originally called something like Quepee (or QP) Burgers because they were a Quarter Pound. I suppose the burgers we had could have been quarter pound before they started, but they were more like two ounces when they were cooked and on the bun. I like a big fat juicy beefy burger and these were sparse thin and slightly greasy. The meat consistency was kind of mushy and the flavor was just missing something. The burgers made me wonder; "Where's the beef?" They had lots of condiments and some of the combos were not bad such as the Halopeno burger, but I craved a burger after I left Halo Burger. The fried chicken sandwiches were better, IMO. They weren't spectacular, but I thought they were better proportioned and were served nice and hot.
At the event, we were served mixed platters of Fries, Potato Nuggets and Onion Rings. Now I don't know your favorite, but I always order Onion Rings whenever I can. And Onion Rings can vary quite a lot. Unfortunately, these were not the lightly batter dipped melt in your mouth variety. These were densely battered and the dark brown thick crust was fairly greasy. I would not pay for onion rings like this. The fries were just fries and the tater tots were just like the frozen food kind our kids used to like.
So what is there to say positive about Halo Burger? The management has their act together relative to trying to please customers. I spoke with one of the owners and she told me that Halo Burger is not a franchise operation, "at least not yet". So they personally run all 17 locations. Wow! That must be a management challenge. And you could tell that they did their all to try and please the customers. I give them credit for being good promoters of their business and that they used Yelp as a means to get the word out for this relatively new Novi location is a credit to their marketing savvy. And the servers at Halo Burger were accommodating too and knew what they were doing.
The store layout and venue was fine for a burger joint and I watched as a few paying customers ordered and were quickly served at the front counter. So it seems to be run properly as a business.
I think I am going to wonder in to the Halo Burger location in Troy since it is nearer to home and close to where I am doing some work and I will try again. Maybe the Yelp experience was tainted by its nature. I will write a review when I do and let you all know.
Meanwhile, thanks Annette for arranging this for us and we'll SYOY.
Best,

The Halo Burger hosts here were awesome and kept the event entertaining throughout the night! The servers were very courteous and professional, exactly what guests like to see. I hadn't heard of Halo Burger before this, and I'm glad I got to experience it.
I got a fast food, chain restaurant kind of vibe, which I think could be improved on. Regardless, Halo Burger's "don't cook it til you order it" almost lessens the vibe, but it was still there. Either way it was fun and entertaining, thanks to the hosts of Halo Burger.
There was Halo Burger trivia where you could win a little gift bag if you got trivia correct. For those who didn't get one, the contents of the bag was a frisbee, plastic sunglasses and a little lunch pouch.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Grace L.Detroit, MI80384182Aug 19, 2014First to Review
I was super glad I got to Halo with all the rain that kept pouring down on the way there. The staff were super friendly and helpful - the hostess/manager did a great job making sure we were fed and entertained. The Boston Cooler was full of noms - I downed two of the little cups and wish I got a whole cupful. Now I know where to find satisfaction for a sweet tooth craving. The burgers were delicious - the turkey burger was quite tasty, juicy, and simple. My favorites were the mushroom swiss and the halopeño burger. The onion rings were great and I loved that they serve tater tots! Great event and got to meet and re-meet some fellow Yelpers. Can't wait for the next one!
