I fancied myself a live music expert in high school, and most of the shows I frequented were here- a recent visit back home confirms that it's still the same old place with lineups geared toward the same crowd and sound, complete with the same decades-old angry rabbit mural behind the stage. I get the nod to the venue name, but wish they'd cover it up as it distracts from the musicians, but would love to see it simply moved, as it has sentimental value.
Drinks here are surprisingly cheap considering most of the people here aren't of drinking age, but the friendliness of the bartender depends on what side of the bed they woke up on that day because I've experienced inconsistent service.
Glad to see the staple pizza place is now it's own actual business- nothing better after a night of sweating it out in the pit. Chill spot but needs a facelift and a thorough cleaning. Wish there was a better bathroom situation though.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Shane H.Orlando, FL441279108Sep 12, 2007
I headed out to White Rabbit last night for a great show I was asked to attend and I was incredibly impressed with the venue as a whole.
First let's talk about the layout, there is now a pizzeria (indoors) and huge outdoor patio, a smaller indoor venue and a large indoor venue. Having so many different areas is really cool because if you get bored with one show or just want to mingle somewhere you can actually hear each other you can just move to another area. I didn't eat at the pizzeria so I can't tell if it was good or it sucked but I am sure it wasn't too bad I didn't hear any complaints.
STAFF:
I really like the staff here actually, they were very courteous, very professional and not like a lot of all ages venue staffs. I even saw some snot nosed little kid and his idiot girlfriend yelling and screaming at one of the security guys and the guy just kept his cool and got them to leave. He must have remarkable self control because I wasn't even involved in that conversation and I still wanted to punch the damn kid in the mouth.
SOUND:
The sound here was really good, much better than a lot of the venues I am forced to go to. I know they could use some additional bass on the stage but that is a monitors issue and nothing the customers/fans are going to notice. The sound guy was good, the room sounds great and their is ample power.
They have a decent selection of beers and bottled stuff for the 21+ crowd, but I didn't see any liquor unfortunately.
Overall, this is a great sounding venue, with a professional staff and ample area to wander, relax, rock out, or just plain chill.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - 4246171236Jan 5, 2011Updated review
We were starving and once we were inside the White Rabbit grounds this is the only place to eat. So we went there by default.
And dang I'm glad we did...this place is GOOD!!! We ordered a medium pizza to share between the three of us and it was plenty...and only $10; with the sodas and water the total was $15. So $5 a person? That's a heck of a deal.
Plus the pizza was fantastic...we ordered just pepperoni and it was greasy but good! A thin crust that was crispy and chewy and hot and fresh...and it only took about 15 minutes I think.
They don't have slices but if we go again I'm ordering a medium just for me because I can eat some pizza and I don't wanna share!!!
You can either go in and out through the front door...or if you're at a concert you can use the back door. But if you're at a concert don't go out the front....you won;t be allowed back in!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jan 5, 2011Previous reviewI LOVE this place!!! If it weren't for smoking being allowed inside it would definitely be five stars!!!
Came here to see 100 Monkeys and The Kissing Club on the last day of their Texas "tour".....and this was definitely one of the BEST concerts ever!
We got there a couple hours early and there was ample parking in the lot behind the venue. And it looks like there is parking out front too, but I can imagine with the other bars near there trying to find parking later on can be tricky.
We got in early because we had a meet and greet with the band and sat around in the outside patio area drinking and waiting. It's kinda cool as the place has a metal fence around it and once you're in that area you can't leave but you can go through the back door to the pizza place and they have drink vending machines out there too...plus picnic tables.
I stood at the back this time just drinking and dancing and had a great view....plus plenty of room to dance. But watch out! It's VERY dark in there and I don't know how many people I saw trip over the step that takes you down in the "pit" area... :(
The bathrooms are meh....not totally disgusting, but not someplace I want to linger....
The beers were only $3! Oh heck yeah...$3 Bud Light bottles make me very happy!!
I was very happy with the sound system although there were a few times there was feedback or weird sounds....but otherwise it was great!
I will most DEFINITELY come back here.....even with the smoking...at least they had ceiling fans to help clear it out and you could always step outside to get away if needed.
Thanks White Rabbit and 100 Monkeys and The Kissing Club for an amazing end to a fabulous trip!! - Fawn G.San Antonio, TX176552779Dec 19, 2011
Where have you been White Rabbit? I use to hear about all touring the bands, come across nameless fliers of promoting bands and now I have to make the effort to drive by to read the mar key to see who's coming that month.
So many years have come and go, there is such nostalgia about the WR. I wish you'd come back and bring those amazing most talked about shows in Texas (and hard liquor license). We need you!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Josh N.Fairbanks, AK114123134Nov 6, 2013
I liked the venue. Small but with definitely character.
We saw the Suicide Girls here and to be fair they could make any venue worth bearing.
That aside, the drinks were affordable and there were multiple bars set up. Decent amount of room, easy to find and parking all over the area for free. The staff handled their business well.
If I were reviewing the bathroom here I'd give it 1-star. Or zero. That was just awful.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 15, 2013
This is the type of place I prefer to see most concerts; small and up-close-and personal. No security blocking you from the stage, and everyone is able to be relatively close to the bands. There's a portion that is outdoors too where you can hang out between bands or while you wait before hand (or even watch the show from out there but the view isnt as great as inside).
Drinks were surprisingly inexpensive. I'm used to paying $9 for beer at most house of blues but I want to say beers were about $3 each here? Wasn't expecting that, but very pleased.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Gloria C.Dallas, TX1257516725Nov 14, 2013
I'm not a live music expert, but whenever Taking Back Sunday comes to town my sister in law have a tradition of going to see them at White Rabbit. We just can't get enough of being the oldest concert goers in the entire venue.
It's somewhat open air, with the stage, standing room, and bar area being covered. I was pleasantly surprised to see a little food tent putting out sausage wraps and such this last time - it was at least new to me. And who doesn't like a little snack with their beer?
The bathroom situation is pretty gross, water bottles out of the vending machine are $2, and closed-toe shoes are definitely a must. But, I feel like WR is a San Antonio institution.
The staff is always friendlier than you'd expect at a place like this, and the young'ns surprisingly abide by general concert etiquette.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Jessica A.San Antonio, TX166196219Sep 25, 2012
So I went back and forth from three stars to four stars for a good five minutes. I'm a bit biased I suppose. The White Rabbit played such a significant part in my adolescent years and will always have a special place in my heart. Today however it seems to have lost its charm. I really try to avoid the White Rabbit when it comes to national bands. It gets way too crowded and too hot especially in the summer. Maybe I'm just getting old? lol
Dislikes:
-having Port(a)potty's... instead of fixing the previous restroom stalls which in the last couple of months have remained closed and smell horrible around them.
-The stage can really use some updating. After the husband finished a recent set I decided to help get his stuff off the stage. The ramp down has torn carpet and had a very unpleasant run down.
-No AC, sure the venue opens up to let air in but were in SA. It's always or close to really hot all the time.
-This place really needs a liquor license. Liquor makes everything better. :0)
- Also, the last couple of times we were greeted by kids (15/16ish) carded by and paid them. A bit strange again maybe me getting old...
Likes:
-This place has been open for years (and stayed open). It has seen all kinds of acts.
-Artslam!
-Beer is cheap.
- The sound is usually done pretty well.
-Patio is nice.
- You have a pretty good view from the bar without getting into the crowd. Sigh, again me getting old lol.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Samantha Y.San Antonio, TX403Aug 22, 2010
I've probably been to the rabbit about 20+ times and I love it there. I've paid anywhere from 15 to 25 bucks to get in or for the tickets. I'll probably will keep going back and paying whatever to see my favorite bands.
I'm very comfortable there.
I've never really notice the staff unless they're hot lol.
I'm under 21 so I couldn't tell you anything about the bar in the back of the main stage room.
There is a room with the main stage where the bar is and the only seating is at the bar. There is a smaller room with a second stage and some couches most of the time the bands are back there chilling before their set or when they book double tours the less popular bands will be playing in that room at the same time some times like nothing is set in stone really. The restroom is in between the two rooms. There is also an outside area with a few picnic tables for seating and a pizzeria with plenty of seating.
It gets pretty crowded as the night gets later. It gets kinda hot but we are in Texas, its always hot. I've probably got hit almost every time I've been there ( I hit back) so if you don't think you can handle it hang in the back or off to the side. I recently brought my 16 year old cousin along to the silverstein show and she thought it was "crazy" but she said she had a good time.
Restrooms do suck but its all good put sometime toilet paper down on the seat and handle your business some of the potties don't have doors but we all have the same parts nothing new, but I saw those girls looking ha ha.
The pizza is good I almost always have the pizza every time I go. They have recently added raspa (snow cone) stand outside ha ha but they sell cheaper water and sodas than the vending machines there and the sellers are usually hot.
The people are mostly chill but there are a few pre teens running around with their moms lol. I see a lot of the same people there. There are some bitches there but you just gotta show them your not gonna take there crap let them know whats up and they back off most of the time or you can push their ass away from you when a breakdown comes on.
I'd say go and find out about it, its worth it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Andres S.San Antonio, TX117313Jul 11, 2010
The first time I went there it was because I was playing with my band. First of all it wasn't really our scene, but hey, if you like music it doesn't matter. We had to setup in a crappy room with the fluorescent lights all on, which really killed the mood. I felt like I was playing in the middle of Wal-Mart. Their sound techs were lame so unless you plan on playing on the main stage I really suggest not playing there at all.
As a guest, I guess its ok to go with friends and check out the same old metal-core music that San Antonio seems to exclusively have. Its ok, but they're a dime a dozen. Personally the place is a dump and not worth going to.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
